Thanks, Coot!

Having spent a lot of time getting the TKSS18 German U-boat Compilation mod set up and working on top of GWX3 Gold, I just found the new OneAlex mod which does it all in one package:

https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=248010

Download link is in One Alex's YouTube channel page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo5DmCQzPzBGh9MMkD8IebA

These are from my install but they show the level of improvement in the GUC models, in this case the late Type IX.

Great pics again Lima, cheers for sharing them with us.

So there’s other mods beside GWX that you use mate? Any chance of a list or a JSGME shot (you’re more than welcome to PM it to me if you prefer that way), thanks in advance for any info you might be able to share. cheers

Hi Adger!

This is what I've got enabled in JSGME, which excludes the main GWX3 mod which is just installed - one reason I made a second install first. So the GWX3 mods listed either side are the optional 'sub-mods'.

[Linked Image]

Everything after the Compulsory Headdress mod is associated with the TKSS18 German U-boat Compilation (GUC) and I haven't yet got far with trying it out. For example the GUC sensors mod by Fifi IIRC reverts to stock GWX3 values, after reports that TKSS18 drastically reduced the spotting abilities of bridge lookouts. The GUC mod for Type VIIB & C mod adds even better versions of these variants, but because it's a WIP, lacks late war towers and uses new 3d models, it leaves Type VIIs with the later towers having some graphical glitches (so if this isn't added to, I'll have to disable that mod and revert to the original TSSK18 versions, for any patrols that go beyond 1942-3 in a Type VII). The 'no eagles' mod removes odd TSSK18 3d German eagle emblems from the upper fronts of conning towers, these being a pre-war feature and seemingly not common even then.

If I was starting over, I would definitely consider using the OneAlec mod, which is apparently GXW3+TKSS18+some other goodies, all in one mega-mod.

There are some good screenshots of the OneAlec mod here:

https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2725421&postcount=91

https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2732976&postcount=180

It's likely possible to enable the GUC Type VIIB and C mod over OneAlec. One of the former's advantages over TKSS18 is that instead of scattering them out onto the wintergarten, it puts the bridge watch onto the bridge, on the boats it covers. The models are superb, even featuring the rope for the muzzle plug snaked around the barrel, done presumably to make it harder for the crew to forget to remove it when using that weapon! There are also the little cables from the jump wire to the tower, fore and aft, that connected to the radio kit and enabled the jump wires to be used as aerials!

Before enabling mods, I used the DEF SH3 Front End to apply the 'Steam Fix' as described in DEF_Fiedler's installation guide:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/15210/discussions/0/2570942392198112196/

I'm not sure if this fix is necessary for GWX, but it apparently is, for stuff like the H.Sie realism mod, because this sort of mod modifies SH3.exe itself.

In games that are a bit older, if they support it I always like trying 8x multisample AA because its not graphically intensive like super sampling and 8x multisample usually does a good job of straightening out lines. Its been a long time since I played SH3 so I don't remember what works and what doesn't. I think using Nvidia Control panel or Inspector and forcing 8x multisample using override application might help. Then maybe some FXAA on top of that if Nvidia can force it in SH3 might trim off some of the shimmering.

Its been awhile but is SH3 DX9? If so I've been experimenting with the Reshade application in IL-2 1946 and it has some really cool post processing options including multiple types of anti-aliasing. That might be another avenue for anti-aliasing. I imagine though it can be forced with Nvidia control panel or Nvidia Inspector.

Glad you're good to go with modded SH3 Adger! Please don't delete your posts as the discussion may be of interest to others. And I'm sure a thread with some pics from your OneAlec install would be of interest to actual or potential virtual U-boot Kommandanten out there, this being a relatively new mod and little seen up to now.

I'll finish off here with another pic of a GUC boat, this time the Type IXB that will represent U-105 on her next DEF single player career patrol.

Looks good Adger, keep 'em coming please, great to see more of how well this new mod looks!

Seeing Scharnhorst (what happened to her main and secondary armament???) reminds me of that story you may have heard about U-556's 'Parsifal' Wolfarth and Bismarck, as recounted in Robert C Stern's excellent 'Battle Beneath the Waves'. Taking U-556 out of Hamburg on acceptance trials in January 1941 and passing Bismarck, he signalled her, humorously and entirely disrespectfully, 'Captain to Captain: What a nice boat you have!' Bismarck replied, 'What boat, skipper?', clearly a likely prelude to a rocket. Unfazed, Wolfarth signalled back 'I can do this. Can you?' and promptly crash-dived right in front of the great battleship. Amends were made later, including U-556 issuing Bismarck's officers with a 'certificate' promising that they would always look out for their 'big brother'.

[Linked Image]

Anyway do keep the pics coming and let us know how your new kommandant gets on with his first patrol. Hope maybe to see you on DEF some time, too.

PS the detail on that VIIB conning tower is fantastic. And I like the way you can extend or retract the DF loop (which as the modder pointed out, only rotates occasionally as it's and-operated by the radio operator), mount or dismount the UZO sight, and take down the flag, which would not have been carried out to sea.

I see I mis-identified the turretless capital ship in Wilhemshafen - it's actually Tirpitz, which is plausible for the time and location - just passed her myself on my way out of port in U-33 in March 1940. The mainmast should have been a give-away.

[Linked Image]

We passed a Hipper class heavy cruiser, led by a destroyer, coming the other way. The static and moving harbour traffic in GWX makes a big difference. I assume being based on GWX, OneAlec has this too.

From the wistful look one of my look-outs gave her as she swept by, I reckon he's a big ship man at heart.

On well, off to AN19 we go, just off the Shetlands. It doesn't sound very safe even in 1940, but orders are orders.

How is Radmann getting on in U-30?

Great shots again mate. Best of luck up at the Shetties...wrap up it’s pretty fresh up there hahaha . Never realised it was the Tirpitz myself, yep Onealex mod has moving and static Harbour traffic...

I had an issue which I rectified mate but I lost Radmann, started a new career, same flotilla date etc but with a newer boat. Il report and post some shots later mate.

Sorry about Radmann, hope his successor has better luck!

I'm using a U-33 career to try out the GUC before using it with my U-105 career. Only trade so far was a single destroyer, which I stalked out of boredom. Big mistake - he spotted me, before or after I went to periscope depth I don't know. I'm beginning to thing that destroyer sensors in GWX are over-powered. He came right at me, so I waited till he was at 750m then let him have first one, then a second eel. Then crash dived. Got one hit, which sunk him. Not being used to operating in the North Sea, my crash dive took me into the bottom, causing minor damage which was quickly repaired. A few minutes after me, the wreck of the destroyer noisily hit bottom about 300m away! No screenies sadly, I had FRAPS turned off!

Cheers Lima, how far away from you did he spot you mate? il have a nosy in a bit to see if there's any reports about the GWX destroyer sensors, i remember a few years ago playing GWX and wondered exactly the same thing??

Leutnant z. S. Gunther Stahl, U-30 IXB..Dec 1939...A patrol to the SouthWest coast of Ireland, Heavy fog after launching in the early hours of December 2nd, i thought id cut around the East coast of England in heavy seas and through the Channel..South of Portsmouth i came across a French armed trawler, 2 eels sent and the 1st one connected and decimated it, 2 more trawlers were found as i was just nearing Lands end and from 1500 metres they too found their place in Davy Jones Locker.

Out of nowhere appeared a 148t Chaser followed by an aircraft (didn't get a pic) Depth charged by the aircraft that then flew off but i had minor damage..managed to make a surface gun attack on the chaser and sink her but with considerable damage and injured crew ( suicide mission). My medic and damage control team worked miracles and kept the crew alive and i managed to limp home to fight another day, i didn't reach the patrol point but took out 1588 of tonnage...SH3 really does get the blood pumping at times, it's tense, frightning and so atmospheric, listening to the gramaphone and you could almost be there..Thanks Lima for allowing me to post here and without your screenies and AAR,s i probably wouldn't have got back into this amazing sim.

Glad you're enjoying it mate. SH3 is indeed still a sim amongst sims, especially with some good mods. That GWX-based OneAlex mod looks VERY good, tempted to have it as a third(!!) install. Super screenies, keep 'em coming!
