Bert Bartt
40 Sqn.
A.M. Line Patrol
April 1917

We were headed for the lines across from Lille when we ran into a flight of DFW C.V.s. As we moved to attack, we were set upon by the escorts. Since the rest of the flight seemed to be able to handle them, I pushed through to follow the recon craft. Having lost time in the few turns I did to evaluate the escort flight, I had fallen far behind. I chased them over the front but was still quite a ways behind. I was about to give up on them when they suddenly started to land. I attacked one of them and then tried to make my way home when an errant flight of Albatros scouts dove down. On me. Alone. I fought the back across the front until I reached the point where (fortunately) the rest of my flight that was still flying was awaiting my return. With their help, we drove off the attackers and I put in for three claims. All-in-all, 40 Sqn. claimed 5 enemy craft against two of ours damaged.

That was a great hop Rick. I am just trying to decide if you were insanely courageous, had suicidal tendencies or were just plain dumb? I mean no disrespect, but three Albys with an altitude advantage that were diving on your six over no mans land, and your mates no where to be found in the beginning. Good work staying alive and bagging at least one Hun, but I fear for Bert's future.

I think there might have been four and that big bang I heard was one cracking up on the way to the ground. Anyway, point taken! Although three Albatros scouts against one Nieuport isn't too bad odds, if you don't target fixate. WOFF AI does a better job of splitting up and extending than any other game I've seen, so one must be careful. Anyway, I don't think I had much of a choice once they spotted me. I was trying to make for the cloud, but no time! And I did work to pull them to our side of the trenches whenever I could. I think the luckiest part was that there were no active enemy infantry units where I decided to cross. Anyway, point taken! salute

Rother Nought

3 Sqn RNAS

Oct. 1916

Near Dunkerque,

We lost Sam Atherton the other day. He went down when he was hit by Archie dog-fighting too low near a Hun balloon. My promotion to full Lieutenant put me in charge of our flight. I took Ash and a couple of the newer boys out to clear the way for our Strutters to bomb the Loos Junction rail yard. The plan was to go down to Lens and turn North, drawing the attention of any enemies in the area and the Strutters would be able to fly directly in. We caught a flight of three huns directly over Lens at about our altitude. As there were four of us, I liked those odds. They were either Fokker biplanes or the new Albatros scouts, which have not come close enough for me to get a good look at.

Made a claim for 1 driven down, 1 down in flames. Went off to Loos Junction afterwards but couldn't find the Strutters or anyone from my flight but bomb damage was visible. Got back home to find everyone back safely.
