Carrick - Walter is baaaak. Excellent. Love the new paint job on his deathmobile Pfalz. I do hope the rumors of new machines are true.

Albert - Wilkommen Jacob! Looking forward to hearing his story. H&B!

Lou - Freddy scored some nice digs. Well done! Coles seems a regular Jeeves and Freddy would know. A good batman makes all the difference. Maybe the two old pals will bump into one another at some point. Only 121 for Oliver so far. We shall see what today brings.

TWK - No worries on the deletion. Kadett Mittelheur had yet to make a mark. You'll want to get that keypress out of your system though. Imagine doing that after 40 victories! I have very high hopes for young Helmut's prospects.

Fullofit - I trust Rudi is making good use of the foul weather for some sock knitting and a letter to Berta.

Raine - Is Mac getting some decent attention from Queen Alexandra's Military nurses?

À la Recherche du Temps Perdu - Part 69

7 April 1918
84 Squadron RFC
Bertangles, France

5.45 Morning show was a balloon strafe 5 miles east of Amiens. Sorsoleil, Manzer, Falkenburg, Dingbat and Johnson rounded out B Flight. Clear, bright morning. High cirrus clouds. Perfect hunting weather.

No opposition into the balloon. Flakbatterien curiously silent.

[Linked Image]
I was late breaking off and singed C5333’s tail feathers.

Circling to collect the others I thought I saw dots under the ball of the rising sun. We patrolled eastward and 15 minutes later the dots resolved into 5 Triplanes.

[Linked Image]
I dragged the Hun for Manzer, who took his sweet time getting a shot off.

[Linked Image]
Triplanes littered the morning sky

I dropped onto a Hun chasing Manzer, hitting with 3 solid bursts to the Triplanes engine. The Hun belched smoke, broke off Manzer, and ran low. I hit him again as he scissored wildly. I could see bits of 3-ply flying off his machine. Manzer cut back in and we nearly collided. Our wingtips missed by a yard as I shot skyward.

[Linked Image]
I will speak to him about this…

All landed safely. I pulled Manzer aside on the flight line and when the others were out of earshot, I tore a strip off him. He d*mn near got us both killed. Manzer’s a fine pilot but reckless flying just won’t do. He took the dressing down in stride and as far as I was concerned the matter ended there. I clapped him on the back and we walked to the squadron office together where I confirmed his claim. It wasn’t until later in the mess that I realized how much I sounded like McCudden back there.

Captain W. A. Southey arrived on the 5th. He flew with 48 Squadron last April before being wounded. He’s had 5 hours of practice patrols so he would join us for the afternoon show.

12.00 Our mission was to attack our former aerodrome at Harbonnieres, located near Proyart at the heart of the Amiens salient.

[Linked Image]
I landed my bombs squarely on the hangar and B Flight followed suit.

No Huns about. I soon found out why.

[Linked Image]
Coming round for another look I noticed the flight of Pfalz I’d missed earlier.

I came vaunting forward and B Flight were with me. Great would be the lamentation in the Harbonnieres Kasino.

[Linked Image]
“He dropped then from the chariot and his armor clattered upon him.”

B Flight sent all of the hapless Pfalz to the Death God. The Kiaser's Flakmen vented their fury upon us as we clawed our way to the lines and safety. The entire flight made it to Bertangles, soot-blackened but intact. This evening, Wing denied the Pfalz but confirmed the Balloon. One Hundred Twenty-two.

Indications are that we will base at Bertangles for some weeks to come. I showed Grevelink’s drawings of ‘The Bag’ to Woodley and Evans. If Evans’ speedy repair of C5333’s shredded canvas is any indication of his sail making skills, he should have it finished in short order. I must find out what he likes to drink…

Wowzers! First DID Campaign outing in BHaH II and it was amazing, and frightening. Captain Frederick Abbott led 'B' Flight on the morning's sortie, an escort of five Breguets of ESC 218 all the way down south of Amiens to attack the new Hun positions there. On the return a kette of particularly nasty DR.1s tried to spoil the show. Freddy got to experience the new AI features firsthand when he wound up in a VERY protracted go-round with a most skilled air Hun. The King's own did win the day, but it took a long time to do it. A whole new sim, especially in a dogfight!

Forming up 'B' Flight and heading across to the rendezvous point. A lovely clear day at last, all the better to enjoy the stellar scenery.
[Linked Image]

Keeping watch over the Breguets as the armada heads south, passing Amiens along the way.
[Linked Image]

Captain Abbott's dance partner for this waltz.
[Linked Image]

Each time Freddy thought he was about to get a shot on the Hun, the slippery fellow eluded him.
[Linked Image]

Round and round and round they went, a swirling fight all the way.
[Linked Image]

But in the end Abbott got a bead on his opponent; the twin Vickers barked and brought the affair to a close.
[Linked Image]

The Captain followed the DR.1 down where it was seen to crash into a line of trees.

Freddy makes a note of the location for his report, and climbs away to rejoin the rest of his crew for the return home.

Watch out everyone, Dead is Dead just got a whole lot deadlier. I was honestly afraid for Freddy in this morning's flip. I thought that Hun had him on more than one occasion.

And welcome aboard NotRelevant, glad to have you with us! I look forward to your man's introduction.

Yes gents, Abbott now has a batman, so let's hope that doesn't bring him the same bad luck it brought Swany. As to Cole's Jeeves-like qualities - perhaps.

Fullofit - Jacob is happy to be in the fight finally, doing something, instead of pen pushing. Hopefully any bling won't sting though.

Interesting mission for Rudi, Strutters attacking Dr1's, blimey they could barely take care of themselves in 1917 and now they want to attack a Jasta head on in 1918? Rudi taught him a lesson he won't forget.

Carrick - glad to see Spatenbrau is back and hopefully with bags of energy after his latest meeting with the nurses. Love the skin job too.

Epower - A singed wing, but could have been far worse thanks to Manzer. Not surprised Winningstad tore a strip off him, it's bad enough being shot down than brought down by a kill hungry fool. Shame about the Pfalz but he nailed the balloon at least.

Lou - Wow, some lovely screenshots there. Well done to Freddy bagging that Dr1. So it was a dicey engagement clearly but he came through it and did his job protecting the two seaters. Glad to see the gong curse didn't strike him and he's better for the experience.

Flugmeister Jacob Kühn
Marine-Feld-Jagdstaffel 1
Jabbeke
7th April 1918

Jacob climbed out of the lorry he'd been sat in since leaving Brussels station hours earlier. He was stiff as a board and as he stretched he looked around.

'So this is Jabbeke' he thought to himself as he got his things and moved towards the set of buildings at this end of the airfield.

"If you would take a seat Flugmeister, the Commander will see you shortly" explained the adjutant as Jacob announced himself and handed his papers over. The adjutant disappeared into the Commander's office.

A few minutes later the door opened. "Leutenant Saschenberg will see you now" and with that the adjutant closed the door behind Jacob as he entered the room.

Jacob gave a sharp salute. Leutenant Saschenberg responded and signalled Jacob to sit.

"So, you are from Hamburg I see. Five years in the Navy and then a transfer to the Marine Landfliegers", Leutenant Saschenberg said as he studied Jacob's paperwork.

"Well, I can't say that I blame you for requesting a transfer. Most of the navy's been stuck in Kiel and Bremerhaven for far too long now, it can sap a man's will to win. I'm glad to see that you got out before the same happened to you Flugmeister" Saschenberg continued.

"You are well aware of naval protocol and traditions I'm sure, but that won't help you here Flugmeister. Only your skill as a pilot and your adherence to orders will do that, understood!" Saschenberg finished.

"Aye, aye Herr Leutenant" Jacob responded.

"Good, go and find your quarters and settle in and grab some refreshment. The adjutant will also assign you your aircraft. Feel free to go and check it out" said Leutenant Saschenberg.

"Later this morning you will complete a short familiarisation flight and this afternoon a patrol, both with the aim of testing your aircraft and reconnoitering the surrounding area, landmarks and so on. I will brief you fully nearer the time" the Leutenant finished.

Familiarisation flight 1

Jacob had donned his flying suit and was sat in the briefing room with Leutenant Saschenberg.

"This first flight I want you to climb up to around 1500 meters and fly a couple of circuits around the airfield. Get used to the surroundings, the nearby airfields, villages. Oostende is to the north so make a note of that. Test the wires and controls of your aircraft as well. Once done come straight back to land, understood?" explained the Leutenant.

"Aye, aye Herr Leutenant" confirmed Jacob.

Jacob took off in his Albatros and climbed quickly. The weather was perfect, blue skies and only a few clouds around. He identified Ghistelles airfield and the various villages around about. He looked north and could see the town of Oostende with the sea beyond......he felt calm and at home in his aircraft. He throttled up and pushed the aircraft, nosing down and completing several manoeuvres before heading back to Jabbeke.

Familiarisation flight 2

Later in the afternoon, Jacob had eaten and he had returned to the briefing room, this time with the full Jasta.

"Meine herren" began the Leutenant. "If you have not already done so let me introduce you to our latest recruit, Flugmeister Jacob Kühn. Please make him welcome" continued the Leutenant.

"So, to business. This afternoon's sortie is a trip up to the lines near Ypres. The whole Jasta will take part. Be on the lookout at all times as we have many enemy formations opposite us across the lines and with visibility so good, it's important we spot them first." Leutenant Saschenberg continued.

He turned to Jacob, "Flugmeister, you are to continue to patrol with us until such time as we run into any opposition. At that point you are to nose down and make your way back here with all haste, understood!" confirmed the Leutenant

"Aye, aye Herr Leutenant" confirmed Jacob.

Twenty minutes later they were in the air. The weather was still fine although there were a few more clouds around than earlier.

They climbed up steadily after forming up and reached 4000 meters. Jacob scoured the skies intently, the sun was bright and made him squint but he saw nothing as they moved off for the lines.

All went well until about 20 minutes in, Jacob saw the pilot to his left pointing high and looked up. He saw a formation of aircraft high above, but what were they?

Jacob got his answer as Kette Eins started to spiral upwards. Clearly these were enemy aircraft.

Leutenant Saschenberg and the rest of Kette Zwei also started climbing. Jacob however looked behind him towards Jabbeke.

Jacob turned and put his nose down. Instinctively he checked his rear but this was clear.

He raced back to Jabbeke and landed without difficulties.

All of the Jasta returned and Leutenant Saschenberg explained it had been more of a stand off rather than a fight, the SE5's had stayed high and moved back towards the lines whilst MFJ1 kept their eyes on them.

"You have started to demonstrate one of the skills I mentioned to you earlier Flugmeister, now it is time to show me the other. Germany needs good pilots Jacob, more than ever. Now go and relax with the others, tomorrow you will be expected to fight alongside them."

Jacob saluted and left the Leutenant's office. Happy in the knowledge that he was now a fighter pilot and keen to prove himself.

Albert - Here's wishing that Flugmeister Jacob Kühn can survive this thing until War's end. Great old photos. Also brill screenshots, and don't you love that new enhanced scenery and terrain! I'm particularly fond of all the little villages that now dot the countryside.

Thanks Lou and totally agree, the new towns and villages were things that stood out to me on Hellshades videos and screenshots, excellent work.

The goggles make it so visceral as well, especially with the dirt on them.

A big +1 on the goggles. I was wondering at first if I was going to like them, (restricting vision and all that), but they are another great immersive, and as you say visceral, touch.

LtCasey - Oh dear, poor Lasconte. Crocked on his maiden flight. At least it's not terminal.

Flugmeister Jacob Kühn
Marine-Feld-Jasta 1
Jabbeke
8th April 1918

MFJ1 had no scheduled sorties for today and after being told this Flugmeister Kühn decided to request additional flight time during a conversation with the adjutant, rather than spend all day on the ground.

A little later Leutenant Saschenberg called Jacob to his office. They exchanged salutes before Saschenberg spoke.

"Flugmeister Kühn, as we have no scheduled flights today, I will allow your request to fly a solo run upto the lines and back." Began the Leutenant.

"As you say in your request, additional flight and familiarisation time can only be a benefit". He continued

"Thank you Herr Leutenant" confirmed Jacob, who saluted and left the office.

'He is keen that one' thought the Leutenant as Jacob left.

Jacob took off and climbed up to 4000 meters. He kept his eyes peeled throughout and found nothing.

The weather was still good and visibility excellent as he made his way west past Ghistelles.

He continued but found nothing except a first proper view of the front lines.

He returned safely and landed without problems.

"Enjoy your jaunt Herr Flugmeister?" Asked the Leutenant as Jacob filed his report. "Well get some sleep tonight, we'll be busy tomorrow" finished Saschenberg.

2/LT Dean Andrews Cunningham
№64 Squadron RAF
Izles-Les-Hameux, Flanders
April 8th, 1918

After a long and largely restless night spent in the back of a supply lorry, perhaps at the courtesy of a training commandant just desperate to get me out of his hands or the situation at the front, my few measly belongings and I found ourselves at Izles-Les-Hameau at around 6 in the morning alongside a truckful of potatoes I've had the joy of snuggling up to in the night. Not before long I found myself directed towards and reporting to one Captain Tubby Hayden from Kent under whose command I would find myself from now on. Captain Hayden who despite his name was not in fact tubby proceeded to explain to me in a rather straightforward manner that the Krauts were getting rather rowdy at the front, and things have been progressively hectic and we had the pleasure of being in the thick of it. Following came a reminder that he had no time for long pleasantries and that I was to report to the field at 8:40 sharp for my first familiarisation flight. In a mix of acceptance and amazement at the prompt reception I was dismissed and allowed myself to spend some time unpacking at the tent where I would henceforth call my accomodations and then introduced myself to my fellow airmen and mechanics.

As time came, I was ushered onto the field, wished some good luck and then strapped into my plane. Finding myself at the controls of a familiar S.E.5a, I thought back to training and pushed on the throttle and hearing the Viper begin its mechanic hum I took off into the cloudy morning sky. As I ascended higher and higher, watching the altimeter spin up I finally heard the distant roar and rumbling of field cannons. Thankful for my heavenly refuge preventing me from being on the receiving end of the hellish orchestra I continued my flight, trying to pay no mind to the thoughts of death and trenches. After several circuits around the field, during which I had the joy of flying past the neighbouring town and a number of neighbouring airfields, I landed back on the ground. There I was once more greeted by Captain Hayden who congratulated me on an acceptable performance and informed me that, should the weather allow it, tomorrow I would be permitted a flight to the front and back. Feeling a mix of unease and excitement at the thought of finally seeing the front for myself, I saluted and was promptly dismissed.

Epower, no knitting and no letters. Rudi’s been up and battling Strutters with a disposition of a hungry shark frenzy. See last report.
So, Oliver continues to hunt enemy airfields. Stirs the hornet’s nest and then goes after the hornets. Interesting technique. Congrats on the confirmed balloon and on avoiding certain doom curtesy of the wing mate.

Lou, careful with those Dreideckers and what is this “AI features” Freddy is referring to.
Well done besting that Fokker. It looks like it’s going to be a long, tough fight before the war is over.

Albert, it was an unexpected thing to have those Strutters this aggressive. Most likely atypical for old and obsolete two-seaters, but that’s BHaH2 for you.
Exciting times for Flugmeister Kühn! The C.O. appears to be a reasonable man. No-nonsense attitude.
Now for the real thing. Training is one thing, but combat patrols are another. I’m glad Jacob is doing well by following orders. Germany needs men that follow orders.

LtCasey, whatever happened to poor Caporal Lasconte? Trees at the end of the airfield? Sounds like someone has a date with pommes de terre in the kitchen.
Hope to see him back in the skies soon.

Carrick, looks like you may have gotten one! Fingers crossed for a confirmation.

NotRelevant, ah finally. 2Lt Cunningham has finally decided to grace us with his presence. No 64, eh? I bet Oliver will want to meet Dean one day.
So tell us, are those potatoes Dean was snuggling to any fresh?
Welcome finally to our war. I am sure the S.E.5a will serve you well. Stay away from any fences or the trees at the end of the airfield, that is unless you like peeling potatoes.
Looking forward to Dean’s flight tomorrow to see the mud.

71 confirmed kills
Awaiting one claim confirmation

On this day Jasta 19 was ordered to patrol over friendly rail yard at Vaux en Vermandois.
They were on their way, flying to their first waypoint when Fuchs spotted two flights of enemy planes above. One of the machines was already diving at them. Rudi thought his Oberursel wasn’t giving him full revs and continued to keep his plane from stalling, while everyone around him got on with the fight. One of the SPADs came close and Fuchs decided to give it a go. He ended up forcing the enemy low to the ground, where the Frenchman nearly got away with it, but Rudi pressed his attack and damaged the beast. His guns jammed in the process. It seemed it wasn’t the engine alone that was giving him grief today. Perhaps it was somehow connected. Synchronizer maybe? Finally Fuchs was able to unjam one of his Spandaus and finished off his target. Once the enemy machine crashed into the ground, Rudi was all too happy to return home and have his mount looked over.

Fullofit: that's if Dean manages to survive long enough, that is! But yes, he has indeed finally arrived in all his potato truck glory. As for the potatoes themselves, fresh enough for him to reek of just potato as opposed to mouldy potato, at least! Better hope that doesn't stick with him, lest the Germans find themselves running in fear of 'Die Kartoffel Flieger'. That being said, I reckon i've gotten quite lucky with my assigned squadron. Quite a fan of the SE5. As for those fences; I'll be sure to keep a careful eye out for that menace. I hear they are far more adept at killing airmen than any Boche flyer could ever hope to be! Some bad luck on your end there with those jams! Must've been frustrating for Rudi, but hey, still one spad down!

NR, I guess Kampfflieger was already taken. Poor Dean will have to stick with Kartoffelflieger, then.
And yes, you lucky dog, an S.E.5 is the machine to fly in. Quite forgiving with enough firepower to make Hackfleisch out of any Dreidecker. Fences be dämned!
I have a suspicion BHaH2 tweaked the gun jams a little. Will have to learn to fire shorter bursts.

Carrick - Well, Spatenbrau is back with a bang and this time it's the enemy. Good job on that Nieuport.

NR - Like the opening, Dean must have been dying to get out of that lorry, I hope he wasn't wearing his number one's. A couple of familiarisation jaunts and he'll be away.

Fullofit - So, even with a dodgy engine and jamming guns Rudi gets his man. Why the SPAD tried that spiralling fall when he could have just nosed down and ran once he was driven low, tsk tsk amateurs eh. Maybe he'd lost his bearings, well he's lost a lot more now.

Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

Flugmeister Jacob Kühn
Marine-Feld-Jagdstaffel 1
Jabbeke
9th April 1918

Morning sortie

Jacob sat ready in his aircraft as the rain soaked the shoulders of his flying coat. 'What a difference a day makes' he thought as the rain splashed his goggles.

Oberleutenant Saschenberg had called a briefing the previous evening and told them that Kette Zwei would be flying an early morning sortie, down towards Ypres. He said that supremacy in the air was paramount at this time and keeping it was even more so. He then stated that MFJ1 was a vital part of keeping it.

He confirmed that Leutenant-zur-see Bertram Heinrich would lead the patrol.

Kette Zwei took off in the squawling rain and formed up around Ghistelles airfield west of Jabbeke.

Jacob was nervous, especially in this weather as visibility was poor with the thick grey clouds and driving rain. He scoured around as they climbed but thankfully saw nothing

The Kette moved off towards the lines as they reached 4000 meters and thankfully Jacob noticed they'd climbed above the rain.

All was quiet until about fifteen minutes in when Jacob saw dark spots ahead. As they neared he saw many more and realised they were flying into an ongoing melee.

Kette Zwei broke up and joined the battle. Jacob picked his moment. He saw a Camel drop down below him and make for the lines. Jacob stayed with him and looked around but he was in the clear.

He dived down onto the unsuspecting Camel and opened fire. He watched as tracer tore into the enemy aircraft.

The Camel rolled and dived for the ground but Jacob followed. He lined up and put another good burst into the Camel and watched as it rolled again but this time straight into the ground.

Jacob drew breath for the first time in what seemed a long time and looked around. He was well over the German lines but saw no other aircraft nearby.

He therefore decided to make for home.

As he climbed out of his Albatros he saw others now approaching the airfield. He went to clean up and file his report. It later transpired that two Camels were claimed as destroyed by Kette Zwei without loss.

Leutenant Heinrich was able to confirm Jacob's fight but no one saw the Camel crash. Jacob would have to rely on ground units for confirmation.

Afternoon sortie

Jacob and the rest of MFJ1 sat in the briefing room. They'd had some breakfast and had dried their flight gear and were now listening to Oberleutenant Saschenberg go through this afternoon's sortie.

"Kameraden" he began. "We will be flying west to the lines south of Nieuwpoort and patrolling there. Again control of the air at this time is vital and we will attack any enemy units coming across the lines" Saschenberg continued.

"Both Kettes will be airborne and I will lead Kette Eins whilst Leutenant Heinrich will lead Zwei." He concluded

Jacob and the others were airborne a short time later and climbed away from Jabbeke.

The weather had improved a little but was still grey and rainy as they formed up near Ghistelles once more.

They climbed to 3500 meters and then moved west. All was good for the first fifteen minutes or so. Jacob was busy scanning the skies as best he could with the enormous clouds around.

Then Leutenant Heinrich signalled and pointed up. Jacob could now see a trio of dots getting larger. He focussed his eyes and could then see flak bursts. He watched as they got closer and recognised them as RE8's.

Just as he was about to climb up towards them he looked beyond the RE8's and saw another, larger formation above the two seaters....'Verdammt, they have escorts' he thought.

As he stared up to see if the escorts were going to dive down he instinctively looked to his left, and not a moment too soon as two Camels came swooping in to attack him.

He rolled into the incoming attackers and down. The agile Camels came around quickly onto his tail and Jacob dived for his life.

He glanced around and noticed one of the Camels had given up but the other was still chasing Jacob.

He now had a plan, he flew through a large cloud and then levelled out and flipped around as the Camel emerged from the cloud too. Jacob fired and hit the Camel who dived for the ground.

Jacob smelt a chance however and went with him. As they neared the ground the Camel realised his predicament and tried to flee but Jacob turned west with him and fired into the engine and cockpit area of the Camel.

Jacob put another accurate burst into the enemy and watched as the Camel burst into flames and crashed down.

Jacob levelled off and looked around, he saw two other Albatros scouts nearby and joined with them. Together they flew back as they had all taken some hits.

As they landed Leutenant Heinrich bounded over to Jacob as he climbed out. "Gut gemacht, alter Seemann!" the Leutenant shouted as he shook Jacob's hand.

Leutenant Heinrich confirmed he'd seen Jacob's victory and both men went to clean up.

"Flugmeister, I have some news, some good, some bad, such is life in this war it seems" explained Oberleutenant Saschenberg later on.

"Your claim this morning cannot be confirmed, no ground forces were able to state what happened with any clarity. However, your victory this afternoon, witnessed by many, well that's a different matter" confirmed the Oberleutenant.

"Good start Herr Flugmeister, more where that came from, if you please!" The Oberleutenant smiled as he spoke.

Albert - Looks like it was a good day for young Jacob, despite the rainy start. Two claims submitted, one confirmed. He's batting .500, pretty darned good I'd say. That one screenie of his glowing Alb above the fire is a beaut.

Fullofit - I agree about the gun jams being tweaked in BHaH II, they do come more readily now, which is fine with me, seems more realistic IMHO. To the "AI features" Freddy was referencing, it's been rumored that the latest Dreideckers have been fitted with advanced interplanes (AI) which supposedly gives them a slight bump in maneuverability. They certainly seem more nimble now. I believe the Hun technical term for these features is "verbesserter mittelflügel", so VM rather than AI would be more accurate I suppose. Of course this could all just be so much hokum, you know how the rumor mill likes to churn things out.
Now then, as for Rudi and the poor handling he experienced in his last outing, perhaps his DR.1 does not have the new VM features. Either way, he still got the job done. Nice video too.

NotRelevant - A fine introduction to your man Dean. And his mount is the S.E.5a Viper? So jealous! He must have an in with someone at HQ.

Carrick - Walter had a good outing as well, eh? Scratch one Nieup.

Casey - Sorry to see Carporal Lasconte had a bad first showing. Here's hoping the nurses are attentive and pretty.

Epower - Does Evans have that bag ready yet? Don't want our Oliver to start getting paunchy.

Freddy and his crew had a rainy go of it on this morning's flip, and no air Huns to be seen. Perhaps the afternoon will prove better.

9 April 1918
65 Squadron R.F.C.
Bertangles, France

Leaving after lunch on their second outing of the day, Captain Frederick Abbott and 'B' Flight are tasked with bringing down a Hun gasbag east of Amiens.
[Linked Image]

How is anyone supposed to find anything in this soup?
[Linked Image]

Having crossed the new front lines east of Amiens and calculating that he must be getting close, Abbott drops down out of the thick gray clouds and is pleasantly surprised to see the Boche balloon just ahead and slightly to starboard.
[Linked Image]

Freddy leads his team around so they can attack the sausage from the east, thus allowing them a direct line back to the west and the friendly side of things.
[Linked Image]

The Captain unleashes the eight Le Prieur rockets, which appear to be right on target.
[Linked Image]

Two of the unreliable projectiles actually connect with the balloon, and this along with incendiary rounds from the Vickers on Abbott's Camel and those of two others in the flight finish the job.
[Linked Image]

Pulling up hard, Freddy barely misses the fireball that erupts directly in front of him. Toasty.
[Linked Image]

Archie arrives and it's time to collect the lads and make a hasty retreat.
[Linked Image]

Climbing to 12,000' on the return trip 'B' Flight breaks out of the gloom and into the afternoon sun. Not an air Hun to be found anywhere.
[Linked Image]

Cloud canyons.
[Linked Image]

Dropping back down, Abbott sees the River Somme and follows its to the northwest, watching for Bertangles which should be showing itself soon.
[Linked Image]

Coming in to land. And look at that, the rain appears to be letting up. Perhaps tomorrow will be a clear day.
