This video claims that it not all the fault of data miners either.

Cheers

I wanted a new GPU for Christmas. Maybe next Christmas.

Yeah, Graphics cards are the new toilet paper. In addition to buying a new custom PC and having no idea how much I am paying for the RTX 3070 that is included, I also had to find a replacement card for the old GTX 980 that went belly up in the 7-year-old rig I'm currently using.

I wanted something at least equal and hopefully a little better than the old card. I ended up finding a new-in-box GTX 1660 super OC at almost double its original MSRP. The GTX 1660 super came out in 2019 and was basically a budget gaming card priced at $250. I had to give $480 for the one I found on eBay and that was about $30 less than anybody else was asking. Still, it was better than paying the same price for a questionable used GTX 980 Ti with no warranty. eBay also had a promotion going on so I also got $25 in eBay bucks back which brought my final cost down to $455 plus shipping.

The card I got was made by PNY and at just 6.5 inches long with a single fan is quite small. However, it's ranked 14 positions higher than the old GTX 980 that went bad based on the hierarchy chart linked below from Tom's Hardware. It also only uses half the wattage of my old card and with only one fan still runs much cooler.

What the people at Tom's have done in the chart is to rank what they consider the best card presently (an RTX 3090) at 100% and then give every other card a percentage based on the top card. The chart has both Nvidia and Radeon cards listed. My new replacement card came in at only 37.9%. However, that was still better than my old GTX 980 which only scored 26.4%. I tried to stay with Nvidia since that's what I've almost always used.

Heck, the RTX 3070 that will be in my new rig only scores 76.3% against the RTX 3090.

The chart starts below the second picture in the article followed by several graphs of the FPS for many of those cards at various resolutions.

Tom's Hardware GPU ranking hierarchy chart

If one looks at the MSRP on Nvidia's website for an RTX 3090, it's $1500 for a basic model with no stock shown anywhere. Scalpers on eBay are asking $3k and up. I'm sure AMD is in the same boat.

Cheers

I don't even want a cutting edge card. I have an i-5 6600 so putting one in is a waste of time.

I usually purchase from e-Buyer or Overclockers and as of today neither has ANY AMD cards for sale and it's been that way for ages. e-Buyer has a few Nvidia lower end cards for sale, as does Overclockers.

I was thinking that some type of GTX1660 would be a reasonable upgrade from my GTX970.

I think the GTX 1660 super OC got may not have sold that well at the time it was released. The difference between the super OC and the regular 1660 is that they simply substituted GDDR6 memory for GDDR5 and then overclocked it a bit. This memory generation change made the card almost equal in performance to the more expensive GTX1660 Ti--and at a better price point. Of course, those original MSRP's are still out the window at this point.

Here's a video of the same guy I posted earlier reviewing the card from Nov of 2019. That's how I stumbled upon his other video explaining the shortages.

The cards he has are the older two fan models which I haven't seen in stock anywhere except eBay and they are asking $600 plus for those. The PNY brand that I got is a dinky one fan model but I am more than happy with it so far. The fact that it seems to run 10 to 15 C cooler than my previous card should help it to last.

The current pricing is artificially inflated by scalpers. It can't last forever and l can't believe there are enough buyers out there who will pay $3k for a top-tier card.

Cheers

P.S. One can still find a bunch of the new in box PNY GTX1660 Super OC's on eBay in the US for around $500--many including free expedited shipping so check your favorite local sellers to see if they have any---if you are willing to fork over that much. I haven't checked eBay in the UK but I would imagine that overseas shipping would negate any cost-benefit of buying on this side of the pond.

P.S. #2 I did look on eBay for the UK and there are a bunch of the PNY versions for sale in the £365 and up range which works out to around $500 USD and up. However, all of them were coming from US sellers and overseas shipping was in the $50 range. I can only guess that some wholesaler in the US dumped a bunch of these into the marketplace and they were all snapped up by greedy price gougers.

Thanks for that one. Very interesting thoughts and nice presentation.

I'll keep waiting for a card of choice at MSRP. That may be a long wait according to the video; but, I don't want to buy a 7nm GPU a few months before 5nm is released -- so, my wait may extend to 5nm release.
