Yeah, Graphics cards are the new toilet paper. In addition to buying a new custom PC and having no idea how much I am paying for the RTX 3070 that is included, I also had to find a replacement card for the old GTX 980 that went belly up in the 7-year-old rig I'm currently using.
I wanted something at least equal and hopefully a little better than the old card. I ended up finding a new-in-box GTX 1660 super OC at almost double its original MSRP. The GTX 1660 super came out in 2019 and was basically a budget gaming card priced at $250. I had to give $480 for the one I found on eBay and that was about $30 less than anybody else was asking. Still, it was better than paying the same price for a questionable used GTX 980 Ti with no warranty. eBay also had a promotion going on so I also got $25 in eBay bucks back which brought my final cost down to $455 plus shipping.
The card I got was made by PNY and at just 6.5 inches long with a single fan is quite small. However, it's ranked 14 positions higher than the old GTX 980 that went bad based on the hierarchy chart linked below from Tom's Hardware. It also only uses half the wattage of my old card and with only one fan still runs much cooler.
What the people at Tom's have done in the chart is to rank what they consider the best card presently (an RTX 3090) at 100% and then give every other card a percentage based on the top card. The chart has both Nvidia and Radeon cards listed. My new replacement card came in at only 37.9%. However, that was still better than my old GTX 980 which only scored 26.4%. I tried to stay with Nvidia since that's what I've almost always used.
Heck, the RTX 3070 that will be in my new rig only scores 76.3% against the RTX 3090.
The chart starts below the second picture in the article followed by several graphs of the FPS for many of those cards at various resolutions.
Tom's Hardware GPU ranking hierarchy chartIf one looks at the MSRP on Nvidia's website for an RTX 3090, it's $1500 for a basic model with no stock shown anywhere. Scalpers on eBay are asking $3k and up. I'm sure AMD is in the same boat.
