Hello there, chaps. I was wondering, after how much time did a new pilot have the permission of having his aircraft painted with custom markings? Was it something that one would get after some time, thanks to specific accomplishments or just whenever?

For Germans it was immediate. You didn't have to be an ace or anything.

Fritz Kempf of Jasta 2 is a great example. 4 kills, then sent back to Flight Schools aas an instructor. But look at his Dr.1. You think he was a 50 kill ace.

Has "Kennescht mi noch?" On the middle wing, and his last name in huge white letters on the top wing.

I don't know about the Entente. I think it was the same because it was more about identification than it was about skill or kill numbers
