The food that built America, episode 8. Campbell's soup. A chemist, graduate of MIT, working at Campbell Preserve Company in 1897 accidentaly invent a condensed soup that can stay fresh in a can. At the time fresh soup was a luxury that most consumers couldn't afford to prepare at home. And now Campbell's soup is something that most people wouldn't even feed to prison convicts.

I saw two movies this weekend:
1) "Phase IV" -- This is a true 1974 hard science fiction classic. Short movie, but reminiscent of 2001, except we have humans versus highly evolved ants. If you aren't into hard sci-fi, this movie might be quite boring, but I enjoyed it. *** out of ****
2) "Split Second" -- Rutger Hauer B movie from the early 90s. Was fun, had some funny moments, but you could tell they were doing their best with a limited budget. I then looked this up on IMDB and it appears it had a 7 million dollar budget, which makes sense, given how expensive it would have been to flood city streets like they did. This isn't a movie I'd watch again, but wasn't unhappy that I spent time viewing. Normally I would give this ** 1/2 out of ****, but a voice inside of me is saying rate it three stars.

I'm always curious to read your movie weekend reports because while I consider myself to be a film buff, you have mentioned several movies that I have never seen or even heard of.

I work hard to find obscure movies, as I've basically seen every mainstream movie worth watching that I know of.

Regarding The Food That Built America... It just occurred to me that I'm watching a new television series that's being discussed on SimHQ! I don't believe this has ever happened before (EDIT: since History Channel's Dogfights) and may never happen again (maybe the first new *anything* I've watched in years)! Great show, BTW. Could have been called "Food Wars" as there's always drama with fierce competition.

By the way, the documentary says 440 million cans of Campbell's soup are sold each year, 7 millions bowls eaten a day, half million dollars each hour. So many millions of people buying it means it's good to eat. The US has over 330 million people (only India and China have more people) and Americans in general have shown that pretty much anything will be eaten regardless of quality!

I work hard to find obscure movies, as I've basically seen every mainstream movie worth watching that I know of. Naturally, a term like "obscure" is a relative one. For example, "Barry Lyndon" and "Lost Highway" are certainly not obscure movies for film buffs but they most certainly are obscure for the overall general population.

Most of this series is set from the beginning of the 1900's to WWII (some later like burger and pizza wars) when many people weren't too picky about what they ate. Heinz came up with a clear bottle so you could see that your ketchup at least looked safe to eat. Early canning could also be hazardous to your health until lid crimping replaced welding. Very interesting and entertaining series to me. I plan to purchase this series on DVD if it's eventually offered.

when many people weren't too picky about what they ate. . Yup. When the monthly cost of food was on average about HALF an average American worker's pay you realize right away why obesity in the first half of the 20th century was so much rarer compared to now.

Just like Blastman, I always go on the hunt for the more obscure. I usually trawl lists of Indie movies. Hollywood just doesn't appeal to me. You should check out a YT channel called Flick Connections ,he does some great compilations of movies, a lot of which I'd never heard of. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT09qC2vwlbJvofZRIdLalg

With the advent of online streaming services (including Youtube) it is so much easier now to discover obscure indie-type films. In the past you had to actively follow the art house/indie scene by either checking out their publications or visiting one of those small independent movie theaters which showed those types of films.
