2 Flights today. !st Kette had Escort : No contact

2nd Kette had Line Patrol which took a Battering. Ran into 2 Flights of Fast SE types. Our 6 machines tangled with 5 a/c while the other hit us from up sun. Mine slashed at me from up sun so I dove ,twisted and ran. Lt Francke dropped on him only to be shot down by a second e/a. ( saw him spin into the ground ) I spotted one e/a flashing by to port so kicked the rudder and hosed my Spandau's at him over 130 rds he just kept speeding away. By then, it was over. The schwarm lost 2 a/c destroyed + 1 pilot wnd. for 0 e/a

MFair, too bad about the unconfirmed Hannover. All this does is put Johnson in a foul mood. Now, take that Dreidecker for example. Totally different story. The bird gets confirmed and Jeremiah gets to celebrate. That’s much better.
Congrats on the MC!

Epower, you had me go check my settings in workshops. Just to make sure gun jams were on. It’s Rudi’s trigger finger that keeps the guns firing properly.
Now explain why the syllabus does not include taking off and landing on a narrow strip surrounded by ditches. Ah, all this schooling. I’m surprised Oliver has the patience for it. He could teach that course. Oh wait, he is! At least his nightmares subsided. All he needed was some rest and a bit of nocturnal activity.

Lou, finally got the pretty one! Thanks of course go to the Gong Fairy. I especially liked the comment about the plague to the enemy.

Albert, Rudi will not only be sleeping with his Blue Max on, but he will also start looking out for a Countess. As you can see below, the Claims Board had gotten wise to his antics and denied a few new claims. Oh well.
And I see Jimmy is having even worse luck with his claims. That’s just demoralizing. Hopefully he can shake it off and keep at it. Someone finally will see them go down and then ... Demoiselles look out!

Carrick, looks like Walter needs that Dreidecker and soon ... and a big stick. Keep on fightin’.

24 March, 1918
Guise, Flanders Sector
Jasta 19, JG II
Leutnant Rudolf Emil Fuchs EK1, HHO, PLM
56 confirmed kills

Walter Göttsch, Jasta 19 Commanding Officer was a reasonable man. He understood well that not every mission can be a success. And even despite the importance of the balloon staying afloat yesterday, it is not always possible. He knew Rudi was doing his best to protect it and he knew even better that one man cannot win the war on his own. He didn’t blame him for yesterday’s failure. In fact, when the young man entered his office with his head hanging low, he knew what he was about to do would raise his spirits. Fuchs could not believe his ears when he heard that instead of being punished for the balloon’s destruction, but he is being rewarded with the coveted Pour le Mérite Orden. He had to pinch himself. The celebrations would have to wait. This morning they were being relocated to Fontaine-Uterte aerodrome. This was much closer to the Front than Guise. Finally the tide of war was turning. Tybelsky predicted they’ll be walking down the Champs-Élysées within a month!
Only 3 of the claims could be confirmed. Perhaps as punishment for failing to protect the gasbag after all.

Carrick, tough outing that one, Pfalz DIII's against SE5's with all the advantages and two groups of them to boot. You survived and that's the main thing.

Fullofit, ahhh the countess, now there's a fascinating subject. As for the claims, to be honest you've left so much debris littered around these last few days it's probably hard to piece it all together accurately. A quiet transfer for you but in the right direction, a chance to take stock and button up that jacket.

As for Jimmy, he's a level headed kind of guy, he must be to have survived two years out in France fixing engines whilst everyone else was shooting down aircraft.

2nd Lieutenant James Harrison
103rd Aero
La Noblette Airfield
25th March 1918

James sat with the other pilots from 'B' flight as Bert Hall gave the flight briefing.

"Gentlemen, as you can see the Major is already up and out this morning. There was an urgent call came through last night for an escort flight this morning to take a flight of Brequet's over to Aincreville airfield. They left at 6.30 this morning" and they should be back in the next hour.

"We in 'B' flight are going to be heading off to the lines north of Chalons. We're looking for anything heading across the lines our way. You know the drill, keep your eyes open and signal anything you see right away. There's only the five of us so let's stick together. Take off in 15 minutes".

Jimmy and the others took off in glorious early spring sunshine. The clouds were few and visibility was excellent, as they climbed Jimmy realised he could see right across the front today.

They climbed up to around 4200 meters and then headed off north, keeping the town of Chalons on their right shoulder.

All was quiet until about 10 minutes in, Jimmy, who was on the left again today saw black dots above and on the left over the lines. It was so clear there was no mistaking them. He watched for a few seconds as his eyes focussed on them. It was a group of three followed by a larger group of about six or seven. They were headed towards La Noblette or even Chalons itself.

By now the others must have seen them too. The flight climbed up towards the incoming aircraft. Jimmy was nervous, he now saw the German aircraft for what they were, three Rumplers and escorting Albatros scouts with height on Jimmy's flight.

Jimmy wanted to go after the bombers but realised he'd be a sitting duck leaving the formation, instead he watched the approaching Albatros scouts. They seemed to hesitate for a few moments, then two of the enemy aircraft dived down. Jimmy broke left towards one of them and climbed, he nervously looked for the other Albatros scouts, what where they upto? The rest of 'B' flight continued climbing after the remaining Albatros scouts. Now Jimmy realised he had two Albatros scouts nearby hellbent on shooting him down.

Jimmy saw the two Albatros scouts were well separated and decided on the nearest one first. He climbed and then cut down across the German who tried to roll out the way. Jimmy scored hits. He looked and saw the other Albatros was some way behind trying to get on his tail now. He then saw the rest of 'B' flight and the remaining Albatros scouts had begun a furball.

Jimmy saw the Albatros he'd hit start a run for his own lines. He looked behind, the other Albatros was trailing well back. Jimmy would deal with him in due course. He swooped down and onto the tail of the fleeing Albatros, he lined him up and put a telling burst into the front of the enemy. The Albatros spluttered and sparked and then burst into flames. He disappeared under Jimmy's nose but Jimmy rolled and watched as the enemy aircraft smashed into the ground below.

Jimmy levelled off and looked behind. There was the other Albatros still, like an angry Hornet who won't let go now no doubt. Jimmy climbed and came around and drew the German back over the French countryside......then he pounced. He virtually looped over and down towards the incoming Albatros firing hard. He scored several hits and came around again. The German realised his predicament finally and dived for the ground. Jimmy was having none of it and dived with him. He came up behind the German and put a burst into him. The German tried to spiral climb away but Jimmy kept firing and must have hit the pilot....the Albatros nosed down and went straight into the ground. Jimmy looked behind and saw nothing but a new crater.

As he climbed away he spotted another aircraft over to his right, it was another SPAD. Together they climbed up to a decent height and as they couldn't see any of the others they flew back to La Noblette.

On landing Jimmy pulled off his cap and wiped his head. That had been one hell of a ride out there. The other SPAD parked up next to Jimmy. It was Ken Marr who strolled over to Jimmy.

"Hell of a job Jimmy, hell of a job!!" said Ken as Jimmy climbed down. "You saw then?" Jimmy asked.

"Did I?" "I saw you nail those two suckers"

Just then we both turned our heads and saw more SPADs landing. 'A' flight was already home by now.

Jimmy filed his report and Ken Marr confirmed the claims. As long as Major Thaw rubber stamped them that is.

Later on the Major called Jimmy over to his office. "Lieutenant, I have some bad news" the Major said. Jimmy couldn't help but look horrified. " The French have asked if you wouldn't mind cleaning their trench up of all that debris you put their way" he smiled as he spoke.

"Congratulations pilot" that's two confirmed.

"A great deal of an aeroplane could be holed without affecting its ability to fly. Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

Albert - Jimmy is a force to be reckoned with in that Spad. Two to his credit already and he's barely begun, well done! Lovely screenshots.

Fullofit - I hope CO Göttsch, being the reasonable man that he is, will be allowing the jasta to throw a proper bash for Rudi and his Orden Pour l'Merite. As for all of them strolling down the Champs-Élysées in a month, well that remains to be seen. To the write-up on your man's latest gong, that was all Raine's work.

Carrick - Walter has a claim to his credit now I see. Outstanding! And that flightline shot is quite a colourful one, so many stripes.

25 March 1918
65 Squadron R.F.C.
Clairmarais, France

Beautiful weather at last as Captain Frederick Abbott and 'B' Flight prepare to take off for a long sortie over to Monchy, charged with bringing down a Hun observation balloon there. The King's ace was in a fine mood, not only because of the weather, (and for being shed of Droglandt), but also because he'd learned at breakfast that his Rumpler claim from the other day had been confirmed.
[Linked Image]

After traveling some fifty miles to the southeast Freddy at last located what he hoped was the correct balloon and dove down upon it.
[Linked Image]

He was amazed when several of the Le Prieur rockets actually found their mark and lit up the Boche gasbag.
[Linked Image]

While Abbott was pleased with his efforts Archie certainly was not and threw all sorts of hate at the retreating attackers. At one point Freddy laughed out loud to himself when he realized the British AA the other day had been far more accurate against him.
[Linked Image]

Crossing back over the front the flight passed a small isolated barrage near Athies. It seemed an odd diversion as the main Hun push was going on well south of here. Latest reports said that Fritz was now a good fifteen miles into what had been British-held territory with no signs of slowing. If they were not stopped soon things could become dire indeed.
[Linked Image]

Back at Clairmarais Freddy waited for the stragglers to return to camp before he headed off to file his report and grab a fresh hot cuppa.

2nd Ltn. Jeremiah Johnson gets medal. Then he does something so stupid he gets his butt killed and fried.

I’ve played WOFF long enough to know when to back off. Why I persisted at a disadvantage with a Hannover who had already told me twice, “keep it up and your dead”, I don’t know but I did.

With the new WOFF coming soon I will get it up and going before rejoined. You gents stay safe!

Another brave, young pilot, gone west! You have my condolences, Mfair.

If anything, it appears that BHaH2 will be even more unforgiving of our mistakes, which is very, very bad news for me! biggrin

Oh no! So Jeremiah has ridden off into the sunset. I suspect that the imminent update will keep us all young, inexperienced, and with newly-minted middle names. See you back soon.

I made a real mistake with my pilot. Knowing that Naval Eight was about to go back to France, I checked while still in England for the next historical event to see if one would occur before the transfer back to France. I read "March 19" and advanced to that date, hanging in to see if I would be in the path of the German rate, but no raid materialised and I was now in France. I played several days until I noticed that the date I was playing was May and not March! So now I have eliminated all my missions except the first which was already reported. I have taken a note of my hours and missions as of 20 March 1918 and started a new pilot named George McAlister to pick up the story from that point. I will have to tweak my narration to get George back to where he belongs. Unfortunately, this stupidity had the effect of making him leave England sooner than it should have, but it allows for the sudden and poignant departure to remain. I will be hiding George in the Dunkirk area for the rest of the week until his transfer closer to the front.

Gulp! Certain German ace just had his visit from the mythical beast as well. This is going to be interesting.
Sorry to see JJ go. One more week!

Raine, why not wait for BHaHaHa to be released like MFair and then start a “new” George?

Raine, no harm done, or at least not much anyway. Carry on my good man, carry on.

You know, this whole Gong Fairy curse thing puts me in mind of a song...

GONG FAIRY, (performed to the tune of "Goldfinger")

Gong Fairy.
waah waaaaah waah
He's the one,
The one with the medals bright,
And a spider's bite.

Such a wrong fairy.

waah waaaaah waah
Beckons you,
To enter his world of bling,
But here's the thing -

waaah waaah waaah waaah

Shiny medals he'll pin to your chest.
Shiny medals he'll give to the best.
Will he call you up? Catch your breath for the list, Sir.
It's a list of death from Mister -

Gong Fairy

waah waaaaah waah
Plucky lads, beware of his gift of bling,
This bling will sting!

waaah waaah waaah waaah
He loves only bling,
waaah waaah waaah waaah
Only bling,
waaah waaah waaah waaah
And here's the thing,
waaah waaah waaah waaah
It's deadly bling,
waaah waaah waaah waaah
Only bling,
waaah waaah waaah waaah
He loves bliiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!
waaah waaah waaah waaah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Oh no, the flyers seem to be dropping like fly(er)s here!

MFair, a real shame there. Jeremiah departs doing his duty. Those Hannovers and Rumplers are no pushovers.

Fullofit, oh no, what happened? In such fine form too. As long as it wasn't testing a dodgy monoplane.

Raine, hopefully you've rescued your man for another day there.

Lou, well done pranging anything with those blinking Le Prieur rockets and love the song.

Carrick, our posts crossed. Wow your man's been in the thick of it again there. Nasty flesh wound which could have been far worse but thankfully wasn't. Well done getting down safely. You deserve a couple of days recuperating with some pretty nurses.

I take it we're carrying on with this forum and thread for the foreseeable? I know the new version is out soon and we seem to be moving to Combat Ace, but are we sticking with this for now guys?
