Anyone have some good flying tips on the Nieuport 28?

Thanks in advance!

Talbot, like the Spad the N28 is a boom and zoom fighter, (at least in my OFF/WOFF experience). Dive, fire on your target, then use your speed to climb back up and out of the fight. Repeat until the job is done. What you need to practice is finding the safe, maximum dive speed limits of your mount. That, and learning how to line up on your intended victim in the dive.

Try not to exceed 150 mph, and if diving on an enemy, especially one circling lower than you, side slip to keep the speed down. When it starts to creak, back off the speed immediately, but do not pull up quickly, the wings do not like radical changes. It is really a good mount if you are careful.

Be grounded with an ear infection until you are resupplied with SPADs...

@OP, also if you don't mind switching out FMs, perhaps try my FM tweak for the N.28 - gives a slightly improved climb rate, slightly higher g-tolerance in dives, but a bit slower/sluggish ailerons than stock, as historical. Overall it is a manageable aircraft but personally I prefer the one- or two-gun Nieup. 27 as far as later Nieups. go.

Cheers all,

Fullofit......I think we've been grounded quite enough these last few days don't you think rolleyes than be grounded even more due to Rickenbackeritus

I don't mind the Nieup 28. It's quite maneuverable, fast and packs a punch. The only thing the SPAD can do better is dive. But until I get a SPAD XIII I've only got one gun in my SPAD VII. So I'd take the Nieuport 28 in a dogfight any day.

"A great deal of an aeroplane could be holed without affecting its ability to fly. Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

Albert, true that, but then we’re not flying the Nieuport “shed the wing canvas in a dive” 28. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the fabric flapping in the wind while you’re trying to bring your bird down in one piece? Epower knows how to do that with no lower wings on his Pup!

Without Track IR I find both types of plane just to restrictive regarding views, esp forwards. So I have hardly ever flown any type of Nieuport or Spad. I do admire the Spad interiors though, very French and artistic. Certainly different to the Germans no thrills austere design, Commonwealth too couldn't match French extravagance. Though I'm certain when your plane is on fire you really couldn't care less, infact the less flammable material the better.

Indeed. The fair maidens provided a vital service. If I was going up against an insufferably arrogant Von whoever in my inferior machine I would gladly partake of the services on offer. If one had the chance. But that's just me.

This is where the expression “by the seat of your pants” comes from, right? Imagine having to dogfight with an itch. And how do you scratch your ... erm, ear with a thick glove like that?

As I recall the Itch was not a very good mount to dogfight with. A prickly kite, fidgety in the controls, with an incredibly irritating vibration in the airframe caused by an odd engine mount. All-in-all a rather rash decision made by the Sopwith design team to build the thing in the first place. It was quickly scratched from production, and while their subsequent release of the Sopwith Calamine did help to soothe things, it did not come nearly soon enough.

That’s just too bad. I’ve heard many a pilot made their maiden flight on those. They apparently were very fond of the control column. It was a joy to hold in one's hand and the blip knob was just a cherry on top.

True, but then that was to be expected, given that Sopwith had farmed out production of the Itch to Tingling upon Red Ness up in Scotland.
