PM, Newfie was not part of Canada at that time.

I know but there could have still been a rivalry due to their relatively close geographic locations.

There is a bit of a a rivalry I suppose PM. We actually had very little dealings with the maritime provinces prior to joining Canada in 1949. Our two major trading partners were the New England States and Britain. There was ,in fact , a fair bit of 'mistrust' of Canada and Canadian politics. That however is a whole other story
