Either some drunk people, or people with the rugby mindset lol...

I bring up rugby because of something I witnessed years ago - I lived in an apartment with a view of a high school field.

Every weekend there were a ton of guys playing rugby there.

EVERY weekend at least one guy got carried off in an ambulance, and often times several guys. They'd even have one or two ambulances parked right there on the field waiting for it to happen.

I have no clue if professional rugby is like that (I do know it's a violent sport), but these guys, man they were masochistic psychopathic pain lovers with deathwishes!

I truly think things like boxing, football, or even cage fighting just simply weren't violent enough for these guys...

Why?
Gloucester is real yummy, well worth the efforts and the risks.

Cheers,

I'm willing to bet there were a few pints put away in the pre game warmups. I'm sure many of those guys felt just fine afterwards, but could barely get out of bed the next morning. biggrin

Grew up ~10 miles from there, back when it was a 'local's event' and know the hill- IT'S STEEP.
The village I lived in had it's own cheese rolling also- this one was a mild version where the cheese was literally rolled around the village- legend says goes back to pre christian rites/lore but many took on there current form in victorian era.
Lots of traditions around the area- nearly all an 'excuse' for a day of drinking/stupidity/upturning of social conventions.
Was very much a thing for farmhands/labourers in olden days- a full double Gloucester (pronounced gloster) cheese would have been a significant thing for a family (and no plastic/ processed rubbish NFB- it's a lovely creamy cheese with a good 'tang' to it, still eat it grilled on toast)

Never heard of any deaths, but it was normal for broken bones/ dislocations- but they wouldn't have felt a thing as the pints drunk traditionally were 'proper scrumpy' (farmhouse cider)- it's STRONG dizzy

Have been to see that hill, about 30 miles from me,not for the event though.
The videos don't do it justice, it's a lot steeper than it looks on footage!
After many injuries, some serious, it was banned due to health & safety concerns as an organised event, but revived unofficially by locals.
The only concession to injury concerns is burly lads from local rugby sides acting as 'catchers' at the bottom of the hill.

Then also locally, we have the "The Cotswold Olimpicks" featuring shin-kicking.

I gather our traditional English Morris dancing has been adopted Stateside. The rather sanitised Victorian version though, not this the more earthy and pagan 'Border Morris':

There has, as you can imagine, a lot of controversy over the traditional 'black-face' adopted by these sides, one of the theories to the origin of which was to disguise dancers during the times of Cromwell in the 1650s when dancing was banned. the side my wife dances with conceded to objections and now adopt 'green face'.

Your interest in our odd English rural traditions is appreciated Flyboy; I'm off now a'smollokin' in my best Pull-on Rumpsters brandishing my Cordwangle, so be I smile

I'll need to do a Google search for both "a'smollokin" and "cordwangle". The dance in the Beltane video was quite fascinating to watch I must say!

I'm surprised that PETC (People for the Ethical Treatment of Cheese) haven't tried to shut that down yet. biggrin

The shin kicking looks hilarious ! I think it's great that people still have fun with old traditions. BD-123, I think your wife's dance side should have told the protesters to the face paint to "piss off". They still say that over there, right? biggrin

I believe "pissed" usually means being drunk over in that side of the "Pond". biggrin

People in France, Spain and Italy probably see those Kraft American cheese singles as products of the devil and they wouldn't be wrong! That cheese is almost as bad as the infamous blocks of "government cheese" that welfare recipients got back in the 1980's!

Shin kicking is not fun. WIKI says a light foam version of the cheese is now used because the real cheese is 7-9 pounds and can roll 70 mph and injure people.

Not only that, it (and things like Velveeta) give REAL American cheese a bad name.

Besides Monterey Jack and Colby, I'm hard pressed to think of any other indigenous American cheeses that have a good reputation.

No way, I don't like Velveeta and I don't like the out of spray can cheese.
