True dat. I found some recent winners puzzling.

The Oscars is an industry award show. It's not a popularity contest to appease the tastes of the general public. It seems most people forget that fact.

I saw two movies this weekend:

1) "North Sea Hijack" - thanks to a recommendation from here. smile Good movie, kept me watching, and they shuffled stuff around a bit through a twist here or there. Was interesting seeing Moore play the polar opposite to a womanizing Bond, where here he was a no apologies misogynist. *** out of ****

2) "Safe House" -- Ryan Reynolds usually stars in good movies--he has a knack for picking better scripts, usually. Denzel, on the other hand, seems to be stuck in the trope of the disgruntled badass dude. What I disliked about this movie was the poor development of the characters, both good and bad. We never had much to "hate" about the bad guys, nor to like about the good guys. They just existed, because. The way the film ended wasn't particularly powerful, either, because the character investment wasn't there. I didn't want to see the bad guys go down, but they did, and I didn't care. Still, wasn't a bad movie, but wasn't great either--I've seen worse. ** 1/2 out of ****

I saw this in the theater and it would have been a total waste of time had Denzel not been in it. As for the "disgruntled bad ass dude" typecast you can narrow that down exactly to the big success of "Man on Fire".

If anything, those episodes have bolstered the perception that most American food is just junk/fast food.

New Coke came out before you were born. If I remember correctly, New Coke came out in 1984 and it was taken off the market after a few months due to overwhelming negative reaction by consumers.

Coke or Pepsi? We buy what is on sale. We have purchased store brand soda many times: 2 liter for $1. They all give me the same gas and sugar high.

Watched The Queens Gambit on Netflix, over the weekend. Needed a change of pace after Your Honor (depressing).
I enjoyed it, I really like when a time period is captured well in a story. And it is a story, based on a novel.
I know NoFlyBoy compared Anya Taylor-Joy to an alien (previously in the thread). She does have large eyes, but she is an attractive young lady.

New episode Hawker Hurricane https://www.smithsonianchannel.com/details/series/air-warriors/season-8

They say Hurricane not only a fighter, it was a (very effective) bomber too?

They talk about this RAF pilot. His Hurricane was on fire, he is wounded, he did not bail out and he continue to chase German planes until he shot down a Bf110. On his way down in his parachute, the British home guards mistakenly shot him wounding him some more.

How many Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires were in a squadron in 1940? Documentary said RAF only have 16 Hurricanes Squadron to stop Germany 3000 bombers and fighters at the start of Battle of Britain. They did not say how many Spitfires squadron were in the RAF at that time. They did say RAF only had 640 fighters at start of Battle of Britain.

Don't forget that we knew the importance of radar and were able to allocate fighters only where needed.

The RAF most certainly had a numerical inferiority compared to the Luftwaffe for the duration of the Battle of Britain but in addition to radar which Chucky mentioned, the UK also had the advantage of being on the defensive which meant shorter flight times and pilots who bailed out usually stood a good chance of being rescued instead of becoming a POW which happened to many downed German pilots. There was also the cover of friendly anti-aircraft fire which helped Fighter Command immensely.

Only 66 of 452 Hurricanes send to France during the German blitzkireg survive to find their way back to England. The ammo for the Hurricane 8 machine guns only enough for 15 seconds.
