My AUG has only one annoying issue in that if I don't pull the charging handle back entirely, or accidentally ride the charging handle when releasing, the bolt won't stuff the cartridge tightly enough into the breach and will cause a misfire. Clearing the jam isn't so bad--but it can take many seconds, and in the heat of the moment would not be good to happen. Otherwise, they have a really good design--just make sure to keep the gas piston assembly cleaned out.

There's the General Dynamics RM-227 prototype for the Next Generation Squad Weapon trials.

OG's comment about low crawling with a bullpup weapon should have been /thread.

Who here, besides OG, has ever served, or used a weapon in combat?

As those of us who have served in the military know, training is one thing. Seeing and facing the elephant is a whole different ballgame I imagine. Incoming rounds update the brochure for your favorite weapon...and maybe your favorite person too.

Never used a bullpup in combat.

I never found a way to do this satisfactorily with a bull pup.

From the US Army training manual.

“ g. Run to the next position —
(1) Keep the distance short to avoid accurate enemy fire.
(2) Try not to stay up any longer than 3 to 5 seconds so that the enemy does not have time to track you with automatic fire.
h. Plant both feet just before hitting the ground.

i Fall.
(1) Sliding your right hand down to the heel of the butt of your weapon.
(2) Breaking your fall with the butt of your weapon.

j.Assume a firing position.
(1) Roll on your side.
(2) Place the butt of your weapon in the hollow of your shoulder.
(3) Roll or crawl to a covered or concealed firing position.

k. Cover your buddy’s movement with forward by fire.”

If you go down this article you will find a portrayal of it. Notice the hand position change from D to E.

https://www.uakron.edu/armyrotc/MS1/9.pdf

Even the M16 wasn’t ideal at this. With the M14 there was no need to slide your hand down to the butt. The M16 is weaker at where the stock joins to the receiver and the solution was to slide your hand from its normal grip at the trigger down to the butt so that the point of pressure is shifted to the butt where the hand is. Never found a way to use a bullpup to help break the fall. It always slammed down on the magazine, twisted the rifle and let you awkwardly collapse to the ground. Then on the ground the location of the magazine to the rear didn’t allow you to really hug the ground and still get a good firing position. The magazine became a teetering point lifting the shoulder and increasing your profile as a target. Magazine change on the ground was awkward and required using the non firing hand to move back to release magazine which meant the rifle became unsupported. Couldn’t get a real visual on the magazine and magazine well which usually lead to a little fumbling. Same with clearing stoppages.

Also can’t use it to buttstroke. Some complain that the shortness means it is not good for bayonet fighting, but I dismiss that as unimportant.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Do they still do that considering how the U.S. military has mostly gone to sliding stocks?

With the stuff we did, we mainly broke our fall first by kicking out with both legs to the sides, although the rifles did land fairly hard.

Hmmm...

I was much better with making my vehicle one with the terrain.

It became as much of an art as hitting the dirt is for an infantryman. Taking cover under fire; while returning accurate fire sounds like the ticket to me. Most probably easier said than done.

I remember Bill talking about his FN2000 trying a non-regulated mag getting stuck. Same any m14 could use.

They are tall and awkward platforms for this, plus its harder to get the best accuracy out of them in a rested position because they are sensitive to small shifts and pressures since you don't have nearly as much weight on the muzzle end as a conventional rifle.

A full magazine adds weight to the back.
