For those of you wise to the ways of the street, you know the phrase Mad Hops means having exceptional jumping ability. My DBX shares the name, and for that reason. Mine isn't exceptional, but it does hop madder than any other ship I own. I flew this one to Colonia last year, about 29 thousand light years the way the drunk crow flies. And back too, of course, much more soberly. Fitted out for that trip, or the way I see fit, she had a jump range of 64 and change. Over time she had gained some weight, as they tend to do through the years. I remember when we first met, and I had taken her out to the engineers, and she jumped 70. But that one had little on it, and anyway was too slow dammit. D-rated thrusters lasted about 2 hours, and half of that was spent engineering them. First time I flew it out after, I hit boost, looked back at the station, and it was still about the same spot haha. No no no. That was the last time I used non-As in any ship.

And then I thought about how I would use it. It's going to be one of the fastest DBX's around (500 Coriolis-world boost), but I also need it to survive. So class 4 shields, even if they are Ds, and engineered as they are, weigh just 2t. (1/160th of Bo's T-10 shields for comparison haha). And of course what is a DBX without a rover? And that integrity could use a boost. HD/DP HRP. And before long 70 jump was but a memory. With enough stuff dropped maybe it would come close. But then it wouldn't be mission-capable, instead some ideal that never got flown that way. I would still toss out the occasional "my 70 jump DBX", even if that was only what it showed on max. And claiming max is like the skydiver bragging about his free fall velocity one foot above the ground. OK, well not like that, it seemed more clever before I wrote it. But who jumps 70 light years on an empty tank? Dead skydivers, that's who. I made it work.

But thisclose to 65 jump range was good enough. Really it is. 70 though has a mystique to it, like shooting 63 at the Masters.

Then one day, actually yesterday, I walked in to a tech broker. Wasn't expecting to find anything, I never have before. But this time was different. Right there in front of me was the Class 5 Double Engineered Long Range Fast Boot FSD that was part of a CG I don't think I participated in. I had scoffed at it, as why would I need fast boot right? That's for min-max PvPers. And it costs mats, not money. You do not unlock it per se, you buy one with mats. Want a second one? Spend more mats. Want eight, lots of mats. Not cheap ones either. So I bought it, of course I did. Then I noticed what I had failed to already know. Fast Boot is not an experimental (double engineered!), and it has a higher optimal mass! It's not just long-range, it's longer-range. How did I not know this? So this means I can still add mass manager, keep the fast boot and get a better FSD than engineering allows. Yes please.

It just appears in your module storage. Do not buy one without the room! Bunch of hoarders 'round here, so this is possible haha. So tonight the first thing I did was swap to Mad Hops. What else? Installed the new FSD and flew to Felicity's shop. Added Mass Manager and boom, 70 light years jump. Some how the rover fell out, and I present the Madder Hops (compare the OM to your best FSD)

This thing has 71 (unladen) jump

Tell them DBond sent ya.

I have ten ships in my fleet and six of them use class 5 FSDs, the Orca, DBX and four Kraits. All of them will get a nice boost out of this. These things won't help the big ships, but everyone has a Krait, or a DBX, AspX ,Chieftain or Python in their fleet. Treat them to one of these before they are gone (which may be never)

There seems to be a discount on these things. Not sure how long it might last, but the mat cost is lowered from what I can tell. They do have higher mass, thermal load and power draw, plus lower integrity, according to the description, but the only differences I see are lower integrity, 16% higher thermal load and 8% higher optimal mass. Mass and power are the same. According to EDSY at least, idle is unchanged, still at 14%. FSD temp does increase four points, from 51 to 55%. For this sort of optimal mass increase it seems well worth the minor drawbacks.

In the DBX it is great. I want to put it in the Orca and at least one of the Kraits. After buying the first one I was already too low on both DWEs and electromechanical arrays to buy another. So I took the iEagle wake scanner outside Barnwell and scanned wakes for a while. But only got two (x3) DWEs. Gotta pick up the pace. So I went and farmed the Jameson Cobra until the G5 one was full, then traded it until I had 20 DWEs, and then stopped off for some of the arrays and now own two more of these.

Right now the cost is

10 Datamined Wake Exceptions
12 Chemical Processors
10 Electromechanical Arrays
10 Telllurium

Tellurium is one of those I got two weeks ago at the bio sites.

Works well in the Orca too. Added about 5 light years. He she is in bare essentials trim, no cabin(s).

Double Engineered FSD Orca

The Phantom is going to get one of these for sure, and maybe all of the Kraits eventually. Poison Whiskey is next.

I’ll definitely grab some for my wee boats. DBX, CM4, and I’ll see what it does for the mediums. I’ll be grabbing some of the double special missile racks as well. Gotta mine some Osmium for them.

Yeah man, it's worth it in my view. But now I'll have six fully engineered C5 FSDs siting around. That's the only real drawback lol.

Picked up one for my DBX. With mass manager gains 6 ly loaded jump. C5 FSD also fits my Python, Krait, and FGS. Good call, D!

How do I get one of these without the CG?

It's open to everyone, if you have the mats. My home base, Barnwell Station in UGP 145 is one place to get them. But any human tech broker will do.

So far I've put these on the DBX, Orca, my rumble bus Krait and Poison Whiskey. The Krait IIs only get about 3 to 4 light years, but they are starting from a lower number (40 to 43 on one). The Phantom should see a bigger boost. The Orca and DBX really like these drives.

The drawbacks are so minor there really isn't a reason I can see not to switch, even if the gain may be small on some ships. Lower integrity, but when was the last time you had your FSD destroyed in PvE? And a few points of jump heat doesn't matter, since it's a fixed temp and safe too. My Kraits for example now jump at 58% instead of 55%. Supercruise heat is unaffected. The main barrier is the mat cost, but even that is reasonable for what this does.

Excellent, that's a sweet gain, and matches my DBX. Yeah, there are a heck of a lot of ships using a class 5 FSD. Six of my ten do. Python maybe a more modest gain for example, but then again, any bump is welcome in a Python.

I'm going to pay more attention to the double engineered CG rewards from here on out haha. Just in case it's not clear, this FSD was a CG reward, but is now open for sale, with mats as the currency.

Hum, I was at Jameson station the Tech Broker didn't have it listed. What's up then? I have plenty of mats.

Isn't that a Guardian broker? Need a human broker. Only thing I can think of.

And yes, you have the mats for two of them so it should appear. And because you can fulfill the mat requirements, it will appear lighted up at the top of the list.

Yes. Thank you. I picked up one for Skittles last night. Perhaps I'll go to this Jameson place for more mats. I'd like one for the Phantom, Asp and Python.

Picked one up for my Asp Explorer and Krait Phantom.

Had all the mats, though I wasn't sure because I knew the price had changed. It was over double for each mat, some where in the high 20's and low 30's for each if I recall correctly, forgot to write it down or screenshot it! DOH!

Gave me 7Ly extra after I went to Felicity and got Mass Manager.

Before doing that, I went and ranked up to Duke in the Empire and went and grabbed a Cutter from Jameson Memorial. Added a few things, 4A Beam Laser and a few MC's, but not much, she's still sitting there in dry dock! Mostly gonna use her to mine and haul.

The Cutter makes me think of an Anaconda Lear Jet on steroids!! SEXY!!! LOL

I bought five of the FSDs in all. Well worth it, but I got them at the sale price. In the long run even paying full price is going to be worth it.

Congrats on the Cutter. I'm a fairly new owner myself. What a ship!
