So much speculation in the industry lately -- so little hard data. Today, some data.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Review Roundup

The embargo on GeForce RTX 3060 non-Ti reviews has lifted. Have a look at NVIDIA’s new mid-range graphics card from the following media:

The linked article links over 50 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Reviews.

Link to Reviews

Quick Newegg check showed a couple different models in stock for $400 and $520.

Another check shows they have a "lottery system" to decide who gets one. Seems fair. Seems easy. But, one has to be lucky to get the card they want.

Chip Demand Outstrips Supply by 30 Percent, Shortages Could Last a Year

There’s supposedly a 30 percent gap between semiconductor demand and supply, at present.

J.P. Morgan analyst Harlan Sur recently released an investor note, saying “[W]e believe semi companies are shipping 10 percent to 30 percent BELOW current demand levels and it will take at least 3-4 quarters for supply to catch up with demand and then another 1-2 quarters for inventories at customers/distribution channels to be replenished back to normal levels.”

The above directly affects AMD according to the article.

So, if J.P. Morgan is correct, it may be as long as 1.5 years before a completely stable MSRP market returns. Hmmm, maybe no RX6800XT at MSRP for me. Good thing my RX5700XT plays all my games at 4K (except MSFS2020).

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT to launch on March 17th

AMD has so far only confirmed that their RX 6700XT will feature a dual-fan cooler and Navi 22 GPU. The company is yet to reveal the specifications and performance targets. This should happen today.

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is the next-gen upper mid-range model that should compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 3060 Ti. The full Navi 22 GPU will feature 2560 Stream Processors, exactly the same number as Navi 10 based RX 5700 XT series

Also, Newegg is selling/shipping AMD 5000 series CPUs at MSRP (when sold by and shipped from Newegg).

I got on the waiting list for an R5 5600X yesterday and received the go ahead yesterday -- and ordered -- to be shipped today.

Many see the 5600X as the price/performance AMD gaming CPU.

Good luck with your new 5600x. My Asus MB was not Bios updated enough to recognize my 5600x and would not boot. Had to use a 3600(luckily kksnowbear had a 3600 we used) to boot the MB and flash the Bios with the needed version before I could build the 5600x onto it. I love my new rig. It is just Win10 that I hate!!!

Thanks for pointing that out -- its worth noting.

In my case, I got "that shaft" a while back (i.e. the CPU didn't work and I couldn't update the MB).

So, I bought a "dirt cheap" (under $100 at the time) 4 core AMD 1200 CPU just to use for the purpose you bring up. It's been used a couple times smile

AMD Brings Smart Access Memory (Resizable Bar) To Ryzen 3000 Desktop CPUs, Up To 16% Performance Boost In AAA Games

In addition to the Radeon RX 6700 XT unveil, AMD also announced that is bringing Smart Access Memory (Resizable Bar) technology to its Ryzen 3000 Desktop CPUs based on Zen 2 cores.

For Ryzen 3000, AMD has stated that users can expect a performance boost of up to 16%

motherboard manufacturers have opened BAR support for NVIDIA GPUs on AMD motherboards too

AMD's Smart Access Memory (Resizable Bar) technology does not require you to invest in a PCIe Gen 4 platform as it will be supported by PCIe Gen 3 too. Based on what we know so far, BAR essentially defines how much discrete GPU memory space can be mapped and today's PCs are typically limited to 256 MB of mapped memory. AMD claims that with SAM, they can access all of the GPU memory, removing any bottlenecks to allow for faster performance.

Intel Ordered to Pay $2.2 Billion in Patent Infringement Case

Intel has been whacked with a $2.18 billion-dollar patent infringement verdict for violating two patents held by VLSI Technology LLC. The judgment is roughly a third of Intel’s net income for Q4 2020

VLSI Technology LLC has no products and does not conduct R&D. It generates revenue (at least according to Intel) solely by suing companies for infringement on old patents

The jury in the VLSI case did not find Intel guilty of willful infringement, which would have increased the damages by as much as 3x.

Intel has stated that it intends to appeal.

EU Wants 20 Percent of Semiconductor Manufacturing by 2030

The European Union is considering plans that would put it on course to manufacture up to 20 percent of all leading-edge semiconductors in the world by 2030.

According to the draft proposal, one of the goals of this project is to reduce high-risk dependencies on technology companies in the United States and Asia. These goals make sense, given what’s been happening across the larger semiconductor industry these past few years.

Some of the rumors around the EU’s plans in this area have involved the formation of a new foundry company, while others suggest a partnership with TSMC or Samsung.

The semiconductor industry is characterized by high barriers to entry and long development cycles.

Hopefully, this will happen and be successful. We'll see.

AMD might be working on RDNA cryptomining cards

AMD Navi 10 and Navi 12 without display connectors

The first indication that AMD might be developing a blockchain GPU appeared back in October 2020. A new Navi 10 part with a device ID of 731E has been added to the Linux kernel patches. It was clearly mentioned that the GPU would not support DCN (Display Core Next) and VCN (Video Core Next Next), essentially leaving the GPU without any output capability.

Almost no concrete information, yet.

FWIW: In July 2018, I bought a new RX580 mining card that had 1 Displayport connector. It was cheaper than a gaming RX580.

My wife's PC uses it on her very nice 2K monitor. It works as well as our normal gaming RX580s -- she plays "puzzle games" and watches TV with it. Picture of our "mining 580" attached.

@Allen, have you had any joy sourcing the 6800/6900 series cards yet? Absolutely zero seen in the UK and there has been a massive hike in prices on the 3080/3090s.........eshops milking the demand for everything they've got.

No. I check a couple sites a couple times or more a day (I don't have a special program running to check constantly).

I assume it will be pure luck if I hit an MSRP card (or near MSRP) anytime soon. I want an RX6800XT but out of impatience I'd probably pull the trigger on an MSRP RX6900XT.

You did very well -- and looking better and better -- hitting on a reasonably priced 3090 so soon after release. smile

As we know, Nvidia is trying to nerf cryptomining Ethereum on some new 3000 series GPUs. Where big money is involved, folks find a way:

Quote
Chinese Cryptocurrency Miners Allegedly Bypass NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060 Hash Rate Limiter, Delivers Up To 50 MH/s

It seems like the mining algorithm used here wasn't Ethereum but Octopus which is a different cryptocurrency coin and based on an algorithm that NVIDIA might not have limited its hash rate for yet. So as of right now, the hash rate limiter remains in place but if other crypto-currencies can give out similar profits as ETH, then that doesn't stop miners from consuming the card for mining purposes.

I'm starting to see MSRP R7-5800X and R5-5600X CPUs (I've bought one of each). In checking twice a day, I've not stumbled across any MSRP RX6800XT or RX6900XT GPUs.

On my systems, the 5600X performs within 3 percent of my 5800X (single core). Thus, the 5600X actually is a very good 1080p gaming CPU (for less money).

As implied in the article, wait for the independent test reports on March 17th.

AMD Threadrips Intel's Sales at Puget Systems

Puget Systems recently shared sales data showing that its sales of AMD-powered systems have now passed the 50% mark, unseating Intel from its previously-dominating 100% share of the company's sales. This win comes even though Puget Systems previously stopped selling AMD systems back in 2015 because Team Red was no longer competitive on the performance front. Still, after resuming building AMD systems again in 2017, Puget has seen explosive growth in the number of AMD systems it ships.

Puget Systems is a boutique system vendor specializing in higher-performance systems that range from smaller system builds to the highest-end workstations

I assume it will be pure luck if I hit an MSRP card (or near MSRP) anytime soon. I want an RX6800XT but out of impatience I'd probably pull the trigger on an MSRP RX6900XT.

You did very well -- and looking better and better -- hitting on a reasonably priced 3090 so soon after release. smile

I'm glad I pulled the trigger early....but only because of the price hikes - the card I bought is selling for £600 more than what I bought it for. Utterly ridiculous.
My original plan was for a 6900XT, I don't think I've seen one for sale yet.
