Dumb question that has probably been asked many times before but is there anything that lets me see the downloaded skins on the aircraft before I select it in game?

I use IrfanView to view the skins. It can be downloaded for free. It doesn't show them on the aircraft but you can see all of the components.

Yes Irfanview is very good, you open 1 skin, then press space to see the next so you can skip through quickly. Or you can press T and it shows thumbnails - takes a while with 7000 skins though wink.

Thank you, I had forgotten about Irfanview. I remember using that back in Wings of War PC days when I did a couple of skins. Seems not much has advanced since those days. It would be good if we had a hangar view like in the Il2 Great Battles series but I guess with limited resources that would be a tad too much to expect.

Paint.net will work as well. Also a good option for any skin modifications. It's relatively easy to cut and past tail numbers and the like since the templates are consistent for each aircraft. Just remember, layers. Always a new layer.

I'm consistently amazed by the level of historical detail and graphic excellence whenever I go for a browse through the skins folder.

Edit - the one downside is the inabiltiy to skim quickly through as with Infranview or Photo viewer

.

You can also simply go to the "skins" folder, set the view preference to "extra large icons", and look through them all right there to your heart's content.

And Windows Photo Viewer works too if you want to cycle through them one at a time instead. But as Pol noted, there are thousands of them to cycle through, so you might want to grab a fresh cuppa' before you start.
