We watch this John Wayne WW2 movie. https://www.amazon.com/Operation-Pacific-John-Wayne/dp/B075KLZ6YJ

How many submarines the US Navy had in the Pacific and Atlantic during the war?

The USN had several hundred submarines in service during WW 2 between the Pacific and Atlantic areas of operation but the vast majority of them were in the Pacific.

Found this just now:

Overall, 263 US submarines undertook war patrols, claiming 1,392 ships and 5,583,400 tons during the war. Submarines in the United States Navy were responsible for sinking 540,192 tons or 30% of the Japanese navy and 4,779,902 tons of shipping, or 54.6% of all Japanese shipping in the Pacific Theater.

Went and found Kill Bill https://www.amazon.com/Kill-Bill-1-Uma-Thurman/dp/B006RXQ8RI

The violence was ludicruous. Arm is chopped off at shoulder, blood erupting for minutes like a volcano: 15 minutes later the owner of the arm is still alive. No way!

The blonde lady fought those those bad guys for 15 minutes and during it, she was sliced and cut so many times. The combination of exhaustion, open wounds and blood loss would had killed her.

The segment showing her in a coma while the hospital nurses took advantage of her, that's just sick. Only a sick perverted person would think that up. Tarantino always have sick stuff in his movies. He did it in Pulp Fiction too.

I guess you haven't watched many authentic grindhouse style movies, NFB. Some of us here grew up watching them. Tarantino is hard core, and his favorite movie ever is "Thriller," otherwise known as "En Grym Film," a movie of revenge. I've never turned a movie off, save for "Thriller," and not because it was bad, but because it was too much.

I love all the movies he's made. He's brilliant.

I saw two movies this weekend:

1) "Bounty Killer" - Thank you, Crane Hunter. That hit the spot. Fun movie! I applauded at the end. The rating on this one is hard because there were flaws, but I find myself wanting to watch again. *** out of ****, but I might give it an extra 1/4 star.

2) "Robocop" - the original. I was in a "I don't give a crap" mood this weekend, and wanted to see some hard boiled no pansies allowed stuff. As awesome as ever, but I'm torn, because of how many times I've seen this movie, it should be rated **** out of ****, but per my rules, there are movies better such as "Aliens" or "Empire Strikes Back," which would put it in the *** 3/4 category, but because if its timeless nature, nowadays I suppose it is a solid four stars. They don't make movies like this anymore.

The social commentary and satire of Paul Verhoeven's films gets lost on many people. I believe "Robocop" was the last time I saw Nancy Allen in a film. It seems her film career largely ended with the end of the 80's.

I didn't care for her butch hair in Robocop at all, but she looked good in "Dressed to Kill."

Very accurate about Verhoeven. There are folks to this day that don't "get" "Starship Troopers." If one feels that movie is only about carnage and killing bugs, they need to watch it again... and again... maybe have their eyes taped open and their brain injected with stimulating drugs, because Verhoeven mostly makes deep movies. There was that whole "Showgirls" thing but we'll pretend he never made that.

This week's Air Warriors episode-

Quote
The B-29 Superfortress changed the face of war. It dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, but was also the first plane with a pressurised cabin and the first that could fly more than 3,000 miles.

Mr Jones, a movie about Gareth Jones, a former advisor to Lloyd George who traveled to the Ukraine in the 30s and blew the lid off the famine going on there.

Ah yes the infamous "Holodomor" which has been thoroughly proven by historians that it was an orchestrated famine by Stalin against the people in Ukraine.

Looking for a way to pass some of the COVID-19 time, my wife and I recently started watching all the James Bond movies (1st to last, in order -- #8 is next). And, all the Elementary (Sherlock Holmes) TV episodes (1st to last, in order -- 3'd season episode #2 next). Most weeks, 2 of each (currently).

I've rewatched most of the Bond films over the past couple of years and the major revelation for me is that the Roger Moore and to a lesser extent the Pierce Brosnan films are very outdated now due to their campiness/cheese.

The Timothy Dalton films were surprisingly dark and serious for their time and I think that's the main reason why those failed at the box office. Audiences at the time still wanted more of the hammy Roger Moore style.

Fast forward to modern times though and audiences have responded overwhelmingly positive to the dark and serious tone of the Daniel Craig films. It just goes to show that you have to know your audience as a film-maker. smile

Eh, Roger Moore is still great. I recall loving Dalton's "The Living Daylights" when I saw it in the theater back in '87.

Moore was a very good actor and he was a very good fit for the Bond role but my comments were really about the overall tone and mood of his Bond films. I make a clear distinction between those two things. smile

We've enjoyed the first 7 Bond Movies. Sean Connery was great in the over the top role played. We were surprised that we were not "put off" by George Lazenby.

We turned off our 7 speaker surround and used noise cancelling headphones (connected to the main audio system and set for our fading ears). The music and sound effects of the 7 Bond movies were dated but nostalgically "special" to our ears.

I'll be surprised if we like them all. We'll see.

Connery oozed gravitas on-screen. It's like he was specifically born to play the role of Bond.

The cheesiness of Moore is what makes his films so special and lovable, Panzer.

If you haven't seen it, I have a feeling you will love North Sea Hijack!

Highly recommended.
