Mark was asking for a better read me that was initially supplied with the 1.28 download. I couldn't get it to work, and didn't know there was a newer version, but it's all good, just something for the archive.

From AO's three READ-ME's
==============================================================================
README.TXT:
==============================================================================
Attached is an ETO_01 Sounds Folderzip

The folder replaces the 'Sounds' folder that goes with the ETO_01 add-on.

You just replace the sounds folder in your EAW root with this one.

I have adjusted all sounds for DB level, and edited or replaced others, and

added some new.

All instructions and readmes are in the zip

AngleOff

==============================================================================
Directions for assigning sounds readme.txt:
==============================================================================
Directions for assigning sounds:
--------------------------------------------------------

The sounds are already assigned for all the planes in ETO_01,
(Early and late Europe, and early and late Russia.) but if you wish to
use a different sound in the folder, place a text file in the
planes/slotxxfm/plane-type folder named "PlaneSoundsxx.mpf" (With xx being the slot
number.) with this info in it:

[EngineSounds]
StartSound=182
RunSound=183

(or whatever the number of the sound file)

If there is already a PlaneSoundsxx.mpf file, just edit the startsound and
runsound number to the sound number you prefer.

If you do not 'assign' a sound with a PlaneSoundsxx.mpf file,
the plane will use the default sound for the slot.

No, he was looking for an improvement of the original readme, which was a little confusing, because it was written for a system which apparently was not implemented:

Quote
The engine sounds are no longer specified from within the aircraft data file.

The sounds are now specified, depending upon what aircraft slot the sircraft is put into.

Here are the default aircraft types and the slot with sound file links

PLEASE NOTE:
1) Only the slot number and the sound files are relevent.
2) This work is based on the sound fixed files and includes the sound fixed files.

setup.c
has been modified to force sound16.cdf to be used no matter whether 8 bit or 16 bit sound is selected.

A modified Sound16.cdf file is required with the new sounds matching the above sound numbers to be installed in the game.
Seperate sound files will be picked up by the game from the EAW root directory should you want to swap different sounds for an aircraft slot.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________-

AN ADDITIONAL REDIRECTION MODE HAS BEEN ADDED.

It is now also possible to have (ONLY for engine) sound files also within a "sounds" folder in the EAW root directory.

The redirect file is a small sndXXXX.ini file

its format is:

FILE NAME snd0060.ini for the redirection of the snd0060.SND sound........snd0061.ini for the redirection of the snd0061.SND sound...etc

FILE STRUCTURE:
[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = up_to_4_didget_number

EG: If we want to redirect the P51D start sound (snd0068.SND) to a sound file in the "sounds" folder and to be called snd0123.SND

We make a snd0068.INI file saved in the EAW directory with the following entries.

[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = 0123

***Just make sure that you do have a snd0123.SND file actually in the "sounds" folder.
THIS WAY A SLOT SPECIFIC SET OF START AND RUN SOUND FILE *.ini FILES CAN BE LOADED WITH SLOT SPECIFIC SKINS AND ALL SHOULD BE EASY SAILING FOR "OAW"

SAMPLE: snd0089.ini
This remapps the RUNNING sound for the TEMPEST to make it sound like the ME262 engine RUNNING sound.

I have this, along with it's soundfiles, included in both my original installs of 1.28 and 1.29. After several hours of trying to decipher what this meant:

FILE STRUCTURE:
[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = up_to_4_didget_number

I couldn't figure it out, as no permutations of the combonations of info did the trick. Then I re-read his original post that mentioned the newer version, and surmised that this was an outdated version of the system.

In the gog version it seems like some cockpits are messed up, for instance the mosquito seems to be stuck in the maximum zoom while in cockpit. There is no way to cam back. Also I noticed bombers are selectable but have no missions in campaign and stukas get assigned fighter missions. What a mess. What is the best version of EAW to play single player campaigns? I have tried several on here. most of them seem to have issues with bomber squadrons flying fighter cover which is suicide. I seem to remember back in the day, original EAW not having the issues of planes flying the wrong types of missions.

I have just checked my original version of 1.28
As far as I can remember the stock 1.2 files were used.
Before 1.28 there was no version of EAW with flyable bombers being selectable from the aircraft selection screen
Flyable versions of the bombers had to be added so that they could be selected using files that were available from what at the time was a very limited selection.

There were no campaigns for bombers in 1.2, and none were added other than as tokens to avoid a CTD.
[Linked Image]
They were never meant to be flown in careers.

In fact nobody has released campaign files for the default ETO theatre since 1.28 was released. Campaign files for new theatres released after 1.28 such as SPAW do exist thanks to the writers:)

I'm not sure where its posted, but 1.28-GOG gives Horizon FOG on Win10 in D3D.

Its unclear to me if its just a change in the eaw.exe or the combination with the GoG DirectX Wrapper.
If anyone that has the gog version (and win10) can test it out in other installs of EAW to see if fog is present that would be awesome.

Basicly I want to nail down which file(s) are the reason behind it. (I think the code-group) tried to restore fog early on, perhaps with the gog wrapper its working)

Mark I do not recall anyone in the code group trying to restore horizon fog.
What happened was that in d3d AMD cards did not show horizon fog but nvidia cards did. There was a registry fix for it which worked up to XP.
Suddenly the situation reversed, with AMD cards showing it and nvidia not.
No registry fix was ever made that worked in Vista....Win10.
The solution was to run in glide, which gives horizon fog.

Okay. so no fog code messed with, hmm. Maybe im remember my notes wrong (Its been a few years since I've read them).

I have a report of 128-gog producing horizon fog in d3d mode on an nvidia card with win10.
Now I just don't know if its the GoG DirectX (ddraw.dll) that is making it work?

But then the person placed the gog wrapper in a 1.2 directory and the fog was not working.
So I'm interested in why its working under the 128.exe from gog, which I take it is the same as from the code group exe.

I might have the get a copy for my self to run tests.

EDIT:
So I did my tests. Its either a registry ID entry or a Flag is turned on in the 128-GOG.exe or something. Because no matter what I've done I only get fog in the gog exe. I compared the code group exe and the gog exe and they are different.
Anyone more knowledgeable in this can shed light on why fog is only in the gog exe.?

EDIT2:
I noticed the 128-GOG version flashes the screen twice when entering the flight screen, and when exiting it. So its detecting or setting something up to provide that fog.

EDIT3:
oh and the movies only smoothly play in the gog 128.exe.
and I get 64FPS in just 128-gog (The provided wrapper didnt boost the frames)
Its the exe or dll that retroism modified.

OK, got EAW 1.28 from GOG.com.

What else you folks would recommend me to download for it?

Mark, that's a very significant discovery regarding the alteration of the 1.28 exe to provide horizon fog. It's also nice to get the little video. Although Glide provides a workaround for the fog, it eliminates the possibility of true widescreen, which I think we should consider an essential property in EAW, if we are to have any hope of encouraging new uptake of the game. Obviously, GOG appreciate this.

As GOG appropriated a form of the code-group exe to provide their version of the game, I think it perfectly acceptable that the code-group consider the possibility of introducing this property into the other versions of the exe, if this is achievable.

Sardaukar, welcome to EAW! There is a HUGE amount of stuff available for the game. There are two places to get the bulk of it. At the top of the first page of this forum is a link to Sandbagger, the original EAW archive, and then if you look at any post by MarkEAW he has a link to his fantastic archive in his signature, which includes quite a lot of tutorials as well as all of the latest releases from modders. Lastly, for the newest version of the game (1.60), look to one of Mr. Jelly's posts, his version has a great auto loading system that has many, many aircraft and scenarios. If you have ANY questions, just post in the forum and we'll be along to help you sort things out!

Copy and paste these links to go to the sites I mentioned:

Oh, by the way, my personal favorite campaign is Desert Air War, available at Sandbaggers and MarkEAW!

Features restored by Retroism (The publisher of the re-release)
-Main MicroProse Globe video plays smoothly.
-Main Intro Video plays smoothly.
-All In Game Films / Videos playback properly.
-More modern controls have been supported, like control pads (see DirectInput Wrapper).
-In Game the Flight Screen displays Horizon Fog (This maybe forced at 'Near' distance at all times?).
-The View Plane functions correctly.
-Only IPX / LAN Play can be used (other modes and protocols removed).

Considering the game now requires DX7 and I get 64fps in D3D only with the gog exe, I'd say there where changes.
I think they either used the source code or hacked the exe or dll.
The byte size is the same but when compared the exe's are different.
It be nice if they shared there fixes with the community / code group as all the old exes can be fitted with the new fixes.
And yes I appreciate that they , GOG / Retroism have pulled in new players.

A slit trench at RAF Gravesend
I have experimented with many of the the 1.2 and (with marginal retrofitting like tmod.dat and runways.dat size) 1.2C mods, and set them up in an install of 1.28GOG with OAW 128. Most work very well indeed. Flew some of those scenarios I haven't dipped into for yonks like DAW, Nachtjaeger, and the original Pacific Tide and FAW. Nice to have the smacker films working.

Haven't had a repeat of the floating artifacts. So hoping getting the tmod.dat format right has sorted that.

We could make available to the new GOG players, a package of OAW128 with a dozen or more of the 1.2 mods. Would that be a good idea? Essentially it would unpack into a 128GOG INSTALL, and with selection of complete sets play straight out of the box.

Any thoughts?

No TCP/IP ?
If so that is very strange.

That's in the code. It could be hacked out, but to what end? Too much work to explain how to people?

I find it all strange, I know i said all this before; the double flash where the gog version detects the video card or internally sets something when going in and out of the flight screen. the 64 frames per second, the directx7 "performance". The Plane view screen working the same way the flight screen is working etc...
All this and its the same byte size. Perhaps the other protocols are indeed hacked out, and that accounts for the exe size??

I wish they would share there secret with the community.

I can confirm that TCP/IP has been removed. This renders the multiplayer opportunities just about worthless unless you are playing with family members on a LAN. I cannot think of any system that is using IPX to fly multiplayer EAW.

This is the original 1.28 having chosen TCP/IP:

Note that the game can be launched host-only smile

You can see Knegel's "close to the front-line explosions" happening- another feature of 1.28 smile
