Doh! The cdf files should be in there too. I had moved them elsewhere for examination and forgot to put them back for the screen grab.

I have now corrected.

aw, looks like a custom GOG DirectX Wrapper which includes a networking wrapper, and a nglide thats installed locally. (I wonder if they are using v1.28 with Glide3)?
I thought they had something special going on and that GOG Wrapper is it. It might be over kill but from what folks are saying it works better than what I've seen used so far. For D3D, on win10 at least.

Looks like directplay reg files are there to turn it on in the given OS. Instead of using the Windows Settings optional installers.

Hmmm, all interesting.

Is there any Author / Programmer name for the DX DirectX Wrapper in any of the readme's?

I'm thinking it might not be GOG specific and may just be a wrapper of the web for download.
If that's the case then it may still have a Win10 limitation, as the DirectX dll files tend not to work in the local game folder, like it does on win7.

The only game readmes provided are the original Microprose documents for 1.0 and 1.2, and the Code Group document for the original 128 release.

There are text documents for the IPXwrapper and for nGlide.

The author of the ipxwrapper seems to be Daniel Collins <solemnwarning@solemnwarning.net>

So the DirectX (DirectDraw) Wrapper is a gog made wrapper , apparently.
The other three wrappers they include are all available on the web.
Included are the IPX Direct Input and NGlide 3dfx wrappers.

I updated my web site in two locations to include support for the GoG eaw game, at least what I know about it. Which is not too much, but there is not much need to know thats different from the prevous info I have on my site.
This page has specific info on the GOG EAW:
https://eaw.neocities.org/first-use.html

There are many other files included but they are part of the GoG GUI and server cloud, and uninstallers. The game can be made portable and I included a file listing of the important ones on my help site.
This page has GOG File List:
https://eaw.neocities.org/install.html

Everything is temporary at the moment , until I find out more.

I think the GOG release may suffer from the memory buffer restrictions we sorted in later Code Group releases.

Having now loaded 128GOG with very many of the 1.2 mods I find that those that have a very high load of additional graphic files, typically skinfiles for high res aircraft and additional tmod files, result in familiar glitches such as cockpit graphics appearing in mid air, floating trees etc.

I suppose the answer is that 128GOG does what it was designed to do very well. It runs the default game, and the less heavy mods very adequately.

You sure its not the wrappers interfering with the memory or speed of the game?
That GoG wrapper is reported a bit slow. If on win10, it maybe even slower as win10 has its own layers that fix menu corruption; colors messed up or tearing.

I guess it depends on resolution too: 1024x768 in flight screen is probably the max someone would want to go.

Plus you don't want to use custom FMs with 128/128GOG exe, other than the ones included, they can cause issues for it.

But perhaps your right, but then if it has the same memory handling as 1.2 then IDK what to say.....I know its all system memory, or 99% of it is.

EDIT:
I'm re writing some info here, to make it easier to understand, however limited by my understanding in some cases.
I have the compatibility section done.
https://eaw.neocities.org/codegroup-patches.html#128

OH: Place 1.2 eaw.exe in the 128GOG folder and run it, see if you get the same problematic issues with the add-ons. Just rememebr to rename the 1.28 eaw.exe to something else as the windows os needs the running exe to be named EAW.EXE
ALSO, save your eaw.ini file too, I don't know what 1.2 will do to your 128 ini.

Running actually in W10 1920x1080. Have no problems at that res with default game or less intensive mods. No obvious problems thus far with modded FMs. What are you getting?

But screenshots are wierd. This from GOG with SWOTL:

Will investigate as suggested.

Something has 1280 as a max width. Play with your ini and see what happens.

I've seen MrJelly have that issue too with the screenshots a few years ago with 1.40. I forgot what it was, the reason behind it, it was corrected i believe. Maybe a res to wrapper issue.

My prevous post where made in late night I think, so yeah only a suggestion for you to try with the v1.2 eaw.exe, if you want too.
It should just be dropped in and should work. With the previous posted precautions.

BTW Does anyone have the , 'NewEngineSoundSystem.zip' from around the year 2008.?
Knegel put it together to teach how to use the "Sounds" folder with v1.28. It consists of placing pointer ini files in the games root folder., it also had 30 slot sounds in it premade.

K, I got it.
I sent you e-mail , twice but it failed twice.
I'll get to trying sometime to see if i can configure it correctly. To see if the sounds folder works.
The directions seem vague, but maybe because i just glanced at them, Or more so because its because i like a lot of details.

Thank you.

Mark,

I just read through the readme, and yeah, it's confusing. I should have some time tonight to go through and write a new readme that has clearer instructions, I want to do some tests first though.

Cheers,

CJ

Mark - the problem may have been a Tmod.dat file of the wrong shape and size. I am forcibly reminded that 128 simpliciter had a 46 column file with a short header. Trying to ram in a 128C file with 70 columns didn't help. This may or may not sort the problem smile

I discover that I had the same screenshot anomaly in widecreen with 126.

CJ, thanks. I'd appreciate it. Probably easier for you to understand than me.
I do have an AgelOff 1.28E sound archive, but it uses a different method I guess to point to the sound files, more like if there present, they automatically supercede the sounds.cdf one.....

Moggy, so the slower performance maybe due to the incorrect TMOD.DAT? Or the screenshot issue?
You can remove GOGs DirectX wrapper or use Glide 2 (nGlide) and see if the screenshot issues resolves.

Hey Mark,

I struggled with this sound pack for several hours tonight, and got nowhere. I think Angleoff's version is the one to use, his readme file has some of the same text, and it would be my guess that the one we are trying to make work is an early version that was superseded by Angleoff's. The code version I have makes reference to the mpf files mentioned in his readmes, and not the ini files mentioned in the original. So, I would archive that one with a disclaimer, maybe even add a readme to the zip that there is a better version out there.

Cheers,

CJ
