I saw two movies this weekend:

1) "The Singing Detective" -- WTF? That's the best I can come up with. The director was trying to pull a Lynch or a Cronenberg without the genius writing and story framing they possess. I haven't figured out how to rate this movie, even after a couple days of contemplation. The dialogue was strong and interesting for the first hour, but then I started to fall asleep when the film couldn't seem to pick a direction. At least in "Naked Lunch" we knew the main characters were huffing roach poison to get high. Here, we see a guy burned in the hospital without ever a hint that he's in for eczema treatment aside from a single line--which alone seems an absurdity given the severity of his case. Regardless, the lines between reality and fantasy are so blurred that any coherent attempt at establishing a temporal zone is almost impossible. I need to watch this again sometime. For now, ** 1/2 out of ****

2) "Knives Out" -- Quaint detective fun. The film would have been better without the social commentary and obvious engineered jabs at certain segments of our society, along with the subtle smugness and nods. Beyond these affronts, overall a charming film that was reasonably entertaining. *** out of ****

I think it is worth mentioning that I can't seem to think of a single movie that has been produced since "Master and Commander" that I have rated a perfect four stars. That's... eighteen years of filmmaking and not a single flawless gem.

Sounds like a perfect subject for a new thread! Let's see, M&C came out in 2003 so have I seen any movies since then that I would honestly give 4 stars? The only ones that come to my mind right now are "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Downfall".

I haven't seen "Downfall" and I almost forgot about "Letters from Iwo Jima." Iwo was a solemn film that was brilliantly directed by Clint Eastwood. I don't think I've ever been to a movie where there was such eerie reverent silence at the concluding curtain fall.

Air Warriors is back. They aired 4 new episodes in November and December and stopped. https://www.smithsonianchannel.com/details/series/air-warriors/season-8

This episode is on F-86 Sabre. I haven't heard of this fighter. WIKI says 9600 were build. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_F-86_Sabre

You've obviously have never read anything about the Korean War.

The Whopper today is not like when I was a kid. There was a Burger King next to our apartment. We would go there and watch the patties going through the broiler and the fire cooking them. You could smell it from our apartment and when you walk into the restaurant, the smell of food cooked with fire. The recent times I dined at Burger King during work lunch break when it's busy, there was no food cooking on fire smell inside or outside. A colleague thinks they cook the patties hours before and reheat them with the microwave when someone order a Whopper.

The overall quality of fast food has most certainly declined over the past 30 years but at the same time we've had a proliferation of "semi-fast food" franchises which have stepped in and they usually have good quality food. I'm talking about places like Five Guys, Chipotle and Panera.

They say North Korea had Russian Mig-15 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-15 which was more advanced than the 4 fighters in the USAF,

the P-51 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_P-51_Mustang

the F-80 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_P-80_Shooting_Star

the F-84 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_F-84_Thunderjet

the F-86 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_F-86_Sabre

Only the F-86 could take on the Mig-15

I'd swear it's another Kurosawa take on a Shakespeare play, but I'm not sure which one. I could also be mistaken on that. Visually it's stunning with the colors, costumes and large number of extra's everywhere. Not a bad movie, but it's definitely no Seven Samurai.

Kagemusha is not based on any Shakespearean play. I'm pretty sure it was only Throne of Blood (Macbeth) and Ran (King Lear) which were based on one. I have the Criterion DVD for Kagemusha and it's one of my favorite Kurosawa films. It also has an interesting production history behind it such as George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppolla contributing money towards the production budget in exchange for the foreign distribution rights. Kurosawa also did commercials for Suntory Whiskey at the time in order to drum up some publicity for the movie.

First woman pilot to break the sound barrier in a F-86 borrowed from Canada, Sabre 3. The USAF would not let her fly their F-86 to break speed records. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacqueline_Cochran#Flying_records

TOM & JERRY I ain't liking it. It's not Stuart Little or Looney Tunes. It's 2 different movies with 2 different stories and don't work together.

Bounty Killer, a turn-your-brain-off dumb but fun little flick that's kind of like a mix of Kill Bill and Mad Max or Fallout.
