Might as well post this here in the naval section.

War on the Sea, by Killerfish games. It´s rough on release but like most games now days. Hopefully things get fixed soon, and we see mods in the near future like we did with Cold Waters.

The very north of Germany
I think I`ll wait a little, saw a few videos, which weren`t all convincing, f.e. a small TF of Japanese destroyers which were attacked by around 12 Torpedo.bombers. No evasive actions whatsoever, so three hits on one, 2 wo on the other and only one got away. And it wasn`t a sophisticated attack from different direchtions, all from the same side. Crews must have been asleep in bright daylight...

Comments over at Subsim are mixed. I'm not convinced by this one. Holding off, let's see where it goes from here.

I did support them because this is a niche genre and that´s the best I can do. I can only hope that it gets better. The game is right up my ally to be honest, and I have been wanting something like this for a long time.

Wolfpack345 has a nice IJN campaign running atm, well worth a watch as he plays a good game. Subs are still well op and you could just go out all out sub fleet kill everything easily if you wish, thanfully, he doesn't.

Thanks Ajay. I agree, wolfpack345 does a good job playing. I like his channel in general. While the game has issues, you can still play the game "sort of". The good part is that there´s patches out almost every two days, which shows the devs are listening and on top of things. From what I understand (could be wrong), some of there more veteran devs left the team to go on to work on the MicroProse Sea Power title, so progress is slow although constant IMHO. Again, I could be wrong on this info...

Holy...! I can't believe how I missed this release.

I only went through the tutorials for now, but it has got me more excited than any other game recently. This looks like I have finally found a successor for TF1942/PAW1942. And with Task Force Admiral on the horizon, I have even more to look forward to. Happy days smile

I think your going to enjoy it. It works pretty good now after all the fixes. thumbsup

This, and UBOAT on Steam has me occupied till TFA and Sea Power come out.

You are right, I am certainly enjoying it thumbsup

I really appreciate the scale of this: distances and speeds allow some time to maneuver during battles, so it is happily no clickfest unlike many other "strategy" games. The campaign throws some interesting problems at the player: how to ensure air cover over large distances, keep ground forces supplied etc., and I have found that the AI will try to retreat when it is getting a beating (again, unlike in many other games). I haven't played much as the IJN yet, but from what I have seen they will require an approach that is different than for the US side. This is a game that will keep me busy for a long time, for sure smile

I'm still figuring out how to order formations efficiently. I seem to remember that it was possible in TF1942 to order simultaneous turns or successive turns, that would certainly come in handy here. or maybe I am just missing something.

The main problem I am having so far is that I keep running out of ammo. One serious engagement and I have to run back for resupply. Setting ships to "fire at will" is not a good idea, obviously...

In the meantime I am reading up on naval tactics, curious how I will implement them in the game:

For what it is worth and to whom it may interest, a few more observations after a good 10 days of play time.

I have 2 USN campaigns running. At the start I tried to recreate the actual OOB at Savo Island (having to substitute just 1 DD for a cheaper variant). But that left no points for transports, so i had to cut something. Supply for the ships really is a problem and I find myself disengaging often and still running out of ammo. In my other campaign I took a gamey approach, using a CV and transports with only a few DD escorts. Much easier, but it doesn't feel right. I'll have a go playing the IJN campaign next.

All in all I still think it is an excellent little game, but there are a few oddities and annoyances. For example: the tape in binocular view shows true bearing rather than bearing off the bow. No map tools for marking or plotting. Current gunnery and torpedo settings aren't always indicated clearly. Ships require quite some baby sitting in order to make them fight efficiently, and you cannot "delegate" a division to an AI commander like in TF1942. I am hopeful that Task Force Admiral will turn out to be War on the Sea's big brother, but for the time being, at least, this game has enough to keep me playing.

Thanks for the follow up, Johan!

"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold."

If there is an award for developers engaging with their community, Killerfish Games should get it. They have been very receptive of player feedback, and the game has been improving steadily. A lot of work was done on the campaign mechanics. Much of this is under-the-hood and not implemented unless you use mods, but a reworked campaign should be available with a game update soon. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.

Hey, all! I’ve been getting some real enjoyment out of this game after I decided to give it a shot. I’m using the Tokyo Express mod, which adds a lot of ships and aircraft that are missing in the stock game. It simultaneously reminds me a little of War in the Pacific (lite) with splashes of Great Naval Battles and my childhood favorite on SNES, PTO II. While there are still some areas I hope they’ll improve, this game does a lot well. The sub combat is fun, but obviously not sim level, and I’ve really enjoyed the ASW role of my DDs, too! This video depicts the most immersive and enjoyable engagement I’ve had in my current campaign:
