Our venerable old game is now available at GOG.com, an honest, no-nonsense site. It is launched at $12.12 and is currently available at half that price. This should bring a large number of new and returning players. There's life in the old bird yet.

I had a look. They claim that it runs in Win 7 and Win 10, and I wonder if that is true.
1.2 will give the 7217 error.
Correction.
Win 10 now runs 1.2 smile

I believe it's based on 1.28! GOG are very good at optimising old games. People have been requesting EAW on their forums for years. I'd be surprised if they cock this up.

1.2 runs on win7 and win10. No need for the 7217 workaround coded in the later code group exes.

Has anyone purchased it? I don't buy games online, like gog and what not.

It would be neat to know how they fixed the intro and the plane view / object view room if that's truly the case. I'm guessing they have some good wrappers.
Guess I better link there page and the forum over there.

EDIT:
It says you only need 100MB for space, minimum.
590MB is the space required, I guess the movies are all there.

Just bought it. Now downloading. Says it's 1.28 exe.

Update: installs and runs flawlessly on Windows 7. No wrappers of any kind required on my part and even has the little film at the start. ID is '1.28' only. I've changed it to widescreen and runs and looks very well, although fps seems to be limited to 30. Fair play, it's a very solid product.

For what it's worth, I've been hacking away at the 1.28 code, in a large variety of types, and have had no problems running in Windows 10 with any of them.

If it is 1.28 then I am not particularly happy. It contains our work, and GOG are making money out of it frown

I got it. It's effectively the very first Code Group release, the original 1.28 ("No bloody A, B, C or D"). So its 640x480 screenfiles.

At least the original Code Group 1.28 readme is included.

Wow, I had to do some serious digging to even find 1.28 exe, much less the code. I have 1.28 Doshea, which I think was a transition immediately following?

Not yet. As Jel pointed out to me, all the Code Group's releases are in the public domain. It is slightly miffing however that they are making money out of this.

I could only find the 128 beta release smile

All those 1.2 planes and scenarios at Tally Ho! will presumably work with this release. As presumably will the basic OAW 128 setup

Well, if I have to cancel the Aston Martin... smile

I've had a fool around with OAW 128 and 128GOG, and it works okay. One of the first things I swapped in was the ModSquad 1.2 Battle of Britain. Works fine.

Trying the 1.2 Malta at the moment. Had to tweak the tmod.dat back to the first version we used without the file header. Continuing.

It did cross my mind that since our 128 has been "officially embraced", we could embrace it back by offering new GOG players some alternative setups for their version.

Ok, to take it a bit further, what would we have to do to monetize the much superior 1.6 version?

One of the things Ralf brought up was incorporating the PSM program into EAW itself which would make choosing aircraft much more seamless.

Should we take this up in private?

Someone there has linked my joystick help doc, but there still having problems:
1-they should have read my troubleshoot help doc under joystick and controls
2-and I believe the 1.28 version included different eaw.ini entries for the joystick/controls than later versions. That might be throwing them off.
EDIT: It should have the same controller support that v1.2 has. As more controllers where not added until I think v1.28c. I could be thinking of this wrong though.

So there in for a world of hurt, trying to get multi able controls to work. frown

So I did some tests, the part of Moggy's ini file from "Year=1" to the end didn't show until I patched from 1.2 up to 1.28c.

Moggy, can we see what your main folder looks like?

Doh! The cdf files should be in there too. I had moved them elsewhere for examination and forgot to put them back for the screen grab.

I have now corrected.

aw, looks like a custom GOG DirectX Wrapper which includes a networking wrapper, and a nglide thats installed locally. (I wonder if they are using v1.28 with Glide3)?
I thought they had something special going on and that GOG Wrapper is it. It might be over kill but from what folks are saying it works better than what I've seen used so far. For D3D, on win10 at least.

Looks like directplay reg files are there to turn it on in the given OS. Instead of using the Windows Settings optional installers.

Hmmm, all interesting.

Is there any Author / Programmer name for the DX DirectX Wrapper in any of the readme's?

I'm thinking it might not be GOG specific and may just be a wrapper of the web for download.
If that's the case then it may still have a Win10 limitation, as the DirectX dll files tend not to work in the local game folder, like it does on win7.

The only game readmes provided are the original Microprose documents for 1.0 and 1.2, and the Code Group document for the original 128 release.

There are text documents for the IPXwrapper and for nGlide.

The author of the ipxwrapper seems to be Daniel Collins <solemnwarning@solemnwarning.net>

So the DirectX (DirectDraw) Wrapper is a gog made wrapper , apparently.
The other three wrappers they include are all available on the web.
Included are the IPX Direct Input and NGlide 3dfx wrappers.

I updated my web site in two locations to include support for the GoG eaw game, at least what I know about it. Which is not too much, but there is not much need to know thats different from the prevous info I have on my site.
This page has specific info on the GOG EAW:
https://eaw.neocities.org/first-use.html

There are many other files included but they are part of the GoG GUI and server cloud, and uninstallers. The game can be made portable and I included a file listing of the important ones on my help site.
This page has GOG File List:

I think the GOG release may suffer from the memory buffer restrictions we sorted in later Code Group releases.

Having now loaded 128GOG with very many of the 1.2 mods I find that those that have a very high load of additional graphic files, typically skinfiles for high res aircraft and additional tmod files, result in familiar glitches such as cockpit graphics appearing in mid air, floating trees etc.

I suppose the answer is that 128GOG does what it was designed to do very well. It runs the default game, and the less heavy mods very adequately.

You sure its not the wrappers interfering with the memory or speed of the game?
That GoG wrapper is reported a bit slow. If on win10, it maybe even slower as win10 has its own layers that fix menu corruption; colors messed up or tearing.

I guess it depends on resolution too: 1024x768 in flight screen is probably the max someone would want to go.

Plus you don't want to use custom FMs with 128/128GOG exe, other than the ones included, they can cause issues for it.

But perhaps your right, but then if it has the same memory handling as 1.2 then IDK what to say.....I know its all system memory, or 99% of it is.

EDIT:
I'm re writing some info here, to make it easier to understand, however limited by my understanding in some cases.
I have the compatibility section done.
https://eaw.neocities.org/codegroup-patches.html#128

OH: Place 1.2 eaw.exe in the 128GOG folder and run it, see if you get the same problematic issues with the add-ons. Just rememebr to rename the 1.28 eaw.exe to something else as the windows os needs the running exe to be named EAW.EXE
ALSO, save your eaw.ini file too, I don't know what 1.2 will do to your 128 ini.

Running actually in W10 1920x1080. Have no problems at that res with default game or less intensive mods. No obvious problems thus far with modded FMs. What are you getting?

But screenshots are wierd. This from GOG with SWOTL:

[Linked Image]

Will investigate as suggested.

Something has 1280 as a max width. Play with your ini and see what happens.

I've seen MrJelly have that issue too with the screenshots a few years ago with 1.40. I forgot what it was, the reason behind it, it was corrected i believe. Maybe a res to wrapper issue.

My prevous post where made in late night I think, so yeah only a suggestion for you to try with the v1.2 eaw.exe, if you want too.
It should just be dropped in and should work. With the previous posted precautions.

BTW Does anyone have the , 'NewEngineSoundSystem.zip' from around the year 2008.?
Knegel put it together to teach how to use the "Sounds" folder with v1.28. It consists of placing pointer ini files in the games root folder., it also had 30 slot sounds in it premade.

K, I got it.
I sent you e-mail , twice but it failed twice.
I'll get to trying sometime to see if i can configure it correctly. To see if the sounds folder works.
The directions seem vague, but maybe because i just glanced at them, Or more so because its because i like a lot of details.

Thank you.

Mark,

I just read through the readme, and yeah, it's confusing. I should have some time tonight to go through and write a new readme that has clearer instructions, I want to do some tests first though.

Cheers,

CJ

Mark - the problem may have been a Tmod.dat file of the wrong shape and size. I am forcibly reminded that 128 simpliciter had a 46 column file with a short header. Trying to ram in a 128C file with 70 columns didn't help. This may or may not sort the problem smile

I discover that I had the same screenshot anomaly in widecreen with 126.

CJ, thanks. I'd appreciate it. Probably easier for you to understand than me.
I do have an AgelOff 1.28E sound archive, but it uses a different method I guess to point to the sound files, more like if there present, they automatically supercede the sounds.cdf one.....

Moggy, so the slower performance maybe due to the incorrect TMOD.DAT? Or the screenshot issue?
You can remove GOGs DirectX wrapper or use Glide 2 (nGlide) and see if the screenshot issues resolves.

Hey Mark,

I struggled with this sound pack for several hours tonight, and got nowhere. I think Angleoff's version is the one to use, his readme file has some of the same text, and it would be my guess that the one we are trying to make work is an early version that was superseded by Angleoff's. The code version I have makes reference to the mpf files mentioned in his readmes, and not the ini files mentioned in the original. So, I would archive that one with a disclaimer, maybe even add a readme to the zip that there is a better version out there.

Cheers,

CJ

Mark was asking for a better read me that was initially supplied with the 1.28 download. I couldn't get it to work, and didn't know there was a newer version, but it's all good, just something for the archive.

From AO's three READ-ME's
==============================================================================
README.TXT:
==============================================================================
Attached is an ETO_01 Sounds Folderzip

The folder replaces the 'Sounds' folder that goes with the ETO_01 add-on.

You just replace the sounds folder in your EAW root with this one.

I have adjusted all sounds for DB level, and edited or replaced others, and

added some new.

All instructions and readmes are in the zip

AngleOff

==============================================================================
Directions for assigning sounds readme.txt:
==============================================================================
Directions for assigning sounds:
--------------------------------------------------------

The sounds are already assigned for all the planes in ETO_01,
(Early and late Europe, and early and late Russia.) but if you wish to
use a different sound in the folder, place a text file in the
planes/slotxxfm/plane-type folder named "PlaneSoundsxx.mpf" (With xx being the slot
number.) with this info in it:

[EngineSounds]
StartSound=182
RunSound=183

(or whatever the number of the sound file)

If there is already a PlaneSoundsxx.mpf file, just edit the startsound and
runsound number to the sound number you prefer.

If you do not 'assign' a sound with a PlaneSoundsxx.mpf file,
the plane will use the default sound for the slot.

No, he was looking for an improvement of the original readme, which was a little confusing, because it was written for a system which apparently was not implemented:

Quote
The engine sounds are no longer specified from within the aircraft data file.

The sounds are now specified, depending upon what aircraft slot the sircraft is put into.

Here are the default aircraft types and the slot with sound file links

PLEASE NOTE:
1) Only the slot number and the sound files are relevent.
2) This work is based on the sound fixed files and includes the sound fixed files.

setup.c
has been modified to force sound16.cdf to be used no matter whether 8 bit or 16 bit sound is selected.

A modified Sound16.cdf file is required with the new sounds matching the above sound numbers to be installed in the game.
Seperate sound files will be picked up by the game from the EAW root directory should you want to swap different sounds for an aircraft slot.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________-

AN ADDITIONAL REDIRECTION MODE HAS BEEN ADDED.

It is now also possible to have (ONLY for engine) sound files also within a "sounds" folder in the EAW root directory.

The redirect file is a small sndXXXX.ini file

its format is:

FILE NAME snd0060.ini for the redirection of the snd0060.SND sound........snd0061.ini for the redirection of the snd0061.SND sound...etc

FILE STRUCTURE:
[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = up_to_4_didget_number

EG: If we want to redirect the P51D start sound (snd0068.SND) to a sound file in the "sounds" folder and to be called snd0123.SND

We make a snd0068.INI file saved in the EAW directory with the following entries.

[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = 0123

***Just make sure that you do have a snd0123.SND file actually in the "sounds" folder.
THIS WAY A SLOT SPECIFIC SET OF START AND RUN SOUND FILE *.ini FILES CAN BE LOADED WITH SLOT SPECIFIC SKINS AND ALL SHOULD BE EASY SAILING FOR "OAW"

SAMPLE: snd0089.ini
This remapps the RUNNING sound for the TEMPEST to make it sound like the ME262 engine RUNNING sound.

I have this, along with it's soundfiles, included in both my original installs of 1.28 and 1.29. After several hours of trying to decipher what this meant:

FILE STRUCTURE:
[SoundSection]
SoundFileNumber = up_to_4_didget_number

I couldn't figure it out, as no permutations of the combonations of info did the trick. Then I re-read his original post that mentioned the newer version, and surmised that this was an outdated version of the system.

In the gog version it seems like some cockpits are messed up, for instance the mosquito seems to be stuck in the maximum zoom while in cockpit. There is no way to cam back. Also I noticed bombers are selectable but have no missions in campaign and stukas get assigned fighter missions. What a mess. What is the best version of EAW to play single player campaigns? I have tried several on here. most of them seem to have issues with bomber squadrons flying fighter cover which is suicide. I seem to remember back in the day, original EAW not having the issues of planes flying the wrong types of missions.

I have just checked my original version of 1.28
As far as I can remember the stock 1.2 files were used.
Before 1.28 there was no version of EAW with flyable bombers being selectable from the aircraft selection screen
Flyable versions of the bombers had to be added so that they could be selected using files that were available from what at the time was a very limited selection.

There were no campaigns for bombers in 1.2, and none were added other than as tokens to avoid a CTD.
[Linked Image]
They were never meant to be flown in careers.

In fact nobody has released campaign files for the default ETO theatre since 1.28 was released. Campaign files for new theatres released after 1.28 such as SPAW do exist thanks to the writers:)

I'm not sure where its posted, but 1.28-GOG gives Horizon FOG on Win10 in D3D.

Its unclear to me if its just a change in the eaw.exe or the combination with the GoG DirectX Wrapper.
If anyone that has the gog version (and win10) can test it out in other installs of EAW to see if fog is present that would be awesome.

Basicly I want to nail down which file(s) are the reason behind it. (I think the code-group) tried to restore fog early on, perhaps with the gog wrapper its working)

Mark I do not recall anyone in the code group trying to restore horizon fog.
What happened was that in d3d AMD cards did not show horizon fog but nvidia cards did. There was a registry fix for it which worked up to XP.
Suddenly the situation reversed, with AMD cards showing it and nvidia not.
No registry fix was ever made that worked in Vista....Win10.
The solution was to run in glide, which gives horizon fog.

Okay. so no fog code messed with, hmm. Maybe im remember my notes wrong (Its been a few years since I've read them).

I have a report of 128-gog producing horizon fog in d3d mode on an nvidia card with win10.
Now I just don't know if its the GoG DirectX (ddraw.dll) that is making it work?

But then the person placed the gog wrapper in a 1.2 directory and the fog was not working.
So I'm interested in why its working under the 128.exe from gog, which I take it is the same as from the code group exe.

I might have the get a copy for my self to run tests.

EDIT:
So I did my tests. Its either a registry ID entry or a Flag is turned on in the 128-GOG.exe or something. Because no matter what I've done I only get fog in the gog exe. I compared the code group exe and the gog exe and they are different.
Anyone more knowledgeable in this can shed light on why fog is only in the gog exe.?

EDIT2:
I noticed the 128-GOG version flashes the screen twice when entering the flight screen, and when exiting it. So its detecting or setting something up to provide that fog.

EDIT3:
oh and the movies only smoothly play in the gog 128.exe.
and I get 64FPS in just 128-gog (The provided wrapper didnt boost the frames)
Its the exe or dll that retroism modified.

OK, got EAW 1.28 from GOG.com.

What else you folks would recommend me to download for it?

Mark, that's a very significant discovery regarding the alteration of the 1.28 exe to provide horizon fog. It's also nice to get the little video. Although Glide provides a workaround for the fog, it eliminates the possibility of true widescreen, which I think we should consider an essential property in EAW, if we are to have any hope of encouraging new uptake of the game. Obviously, GOG appreciate this.

As GOG appropriated a form of the code-group exe to provide their version of the game, I think it perfectly acceptable that the code-group consider the possibility of introducing this property into the other versions of the exe, if this is achievable.

Sardaukar, welcome to EAW! There is a HUGE amount of stuff available for the game. There are two places to get the bulk of it. At the top of the first page of this forum is a link to Sandbagger, the original EAW archive, and then if you look at any post by MarkEAW he has a link to his fantastic archive in his signature, which includes quite a lot of tutorials as well as all of the latest releases from modders. Lastly, for the newest version of the game (1.60), look to one of Mr. Jelly's posts, his version has a great auto loading system that has many, many aircraft and scenarios. If you have ANY questions, just post in the forum and we'll be along to help you sort things out!

Copy and paste these links to go to the sites I mentioned:

Features restored by Retroism (The publisher of the re-release)
-Main MicroProse Globe video plays smoothly.
-Main Intro Video plays smoothly.
-All In Game Films / Videos playback properly.
-More modern controls have been supported, like control pads (see DirectInput Wrapper).
-In Game the Flight Screen displays Horizon Fog (This maybe forced at 'Near' distance at all times?).
-The View Plane functions correctly.
-Only IPX / LAN Play can be used (other modes and protocols removed).

Considering the game now requires DX7 and I get 64fps in D3D only with the gog exe, I'd say there where changes.
I think they either used the source code or hacked the exe or dll.
The byte size is the same but when compared the exe's are different.
It be nice if they shared there fixes with the community / code group as all the old exes can be fitted with the new fixes.
And yes I appreciate that they , GOG / Retroism have pulled in new players.

I have experimented with many of the the 1.2 and (with marginal retrofitting like tmod.dat and runways.dat size) 1.2C mods, and set them up in an install of 1.28GOG with OAW 128. Most work very well indeed. Flew some of those scenarios I haven't dipped into for yonks like DAW, Nachtjaeger, and the original Pacific Tide and FAW. Nice to have the smacker films working.

Haven't had a repeat of the floating artifacts. So hoping getting the tmod.dat format right has sorted that.

We could make available to the new GOG players, a package of OAW128 with a dozen or more of the 1.2 mods. Would that be a good idea? Essentially it would unpack into a 128GOG INSTALL, and with selection of complete sets play straight out of the box.

Any thoughts?

I find it all strange, I know i said all this before; the double flash where the gog version detects the video card or internally sets something when going in and out of the flight screen. the 64 frames per second, the directx7 "performance". The Plane view screen working the same way the flight screen is working etc...
All this and its the same byte size. Perhaps the other protocols are indeed hacked out, and that accounts for the exe size??

I wish they would share there secret with the community.

I can confirm that TCP/IP has been removed. This renders the multiplayer opportunities just about worthless unless you are playing with family members on a LAN. I cannot think of any system that is using IPX to fly multiplayer EAW.

This is the original 1.28 having chosen TCP/IP:

Thank you for your kind words!

I got EAW ages and few computers ago, alas dreaded 7212 error and never got into it. Had SWOTL before and enjoyed.it.

I have IL-2:1946 from GOG too, but not played it that much. I think EAW had great single-player campaigns.

If there is multiplayer, what add-ons people would recommend? And for single-player campaigns?

Of course I need to get grips with this GOG 1.28 version too biggrin

Welcome Sardaukar.

I do not have the GoG version, but it is good to see that it id bringing a few old players back to SimHQ

From what people who have bought the GoG version it seems that they wrecked multiplayer by removing the TCP/IP protocol, which is the only one used these days for multiplayer EAW frown
Just about everything is available from links at SimHQ to full installations with addons, from 1.28c, 1.28e, 1.29, up to UAW160.
For the older versions check this thread:

The 1.28c installation there includes SWOTL:

The GoG EAW web site does say now that its 'LAN Multiplayer Only.' They added that tag line last week.

It is ridiculous that they removed TCP/IP from a version that had massive improvements to the multiplayer parameters.

I took this screen hosting a 1.28 game at GameRanger where they require TCP/IP:
[Linked Image]
I can change the target, the friendly base, the enemy base and the AI aircraft.
A host-only launch is possible, which is great for testing multiplayer Mods:

This was impossible in 1.2- you could not even select the target, just a region frown

The fake multiplayer is great though, as your pointing out.

Yeah, I can't think of a reason other than they probably broke it improving the flight screens/plane view/smacker viewing. Probably a directx improvement, might be a hack to the exe....

For obvious reasons I am not spending 10€ to buy something that contains a lot of my own work smile
What do you mean by "The fake multiplayer"?

When I run my 1.28 I get this:
[Linked Image]

However, I only see the parameters screen if I go via TCP/IP.

What protocols are available on the screen that displays them?
Are you able to get to the multiplayer parameters screen with the GoG version?

eh, Fake Multiplayer, or what your calling HOST Only Multiplayer.

Only the IPX Protocol is available. Those other ones are gone.

Let me see if i can get host only.
I've read about this host only via my notes from researching it and knegels readme....

EDIT:
With the IPX Wrapper placed in the root folder (12 files) I can get IPX only. It allows me to check mark it and select NEW, it goes to the same parameter screen you have in the code-group 128. And since theres no lan game it launched in 10 seconds for host only.

EDIT2:
I just ran 128 by codegroup and i still get the IPX protocol. Not sure why yours isnt showing. But I can't enter it. So I also did TCP/IP and clicked okay for blank IP window, then got the parameter screen on the codegroup 128.

Heres a list of files that come with the 128-gog version: (I'm placing some info there as i figure it out too)

To me host only is better than single mission for single mission games because there are more parameters.
The only drawback is the limited choice of loadout whereas in single mission loadout selection there are many choices.

I also found a bug with my Logitech Extreme 3-D Pro, which may well be a general bug in the GoG version and not specific to my JS.
There is a file named "dinput.dll" and if it is present my throttle does not work. Removing it fixed the problem wink

Yup, the dinput.dll wrapper I think is primarily for game pads, like xbox and nintedeo stuff.

I figured it interfered so i made a note of it. Then I looked at the GoG eAW forum and they finally figured it out over there. So thats good they know about it.

The IPX tunnels through UDP. It newer than TCP/IP. But Host only you should beable to do it offline too, no need for gameranger.

So has anyone tackled to mess of comparing the 128-gog exe and the code-group 128 exe?
I know you maybe able to look at it in hex? But I wouldn't really know.

Why am I so concerned, considering it appears a newer DX is used to get a 'somewhat proper' Fog and better performance (High FPS) for Direct3D/DD, I think its worth the effort to look, since they are not sharing the "internal" changes.

These changes eluded even the code-group all these years, but whom ever, Retroism or GOG did something with the exe to improve it.
(My previous posts in this thread better describe the changes known).

Hi Mark,

If you copy the 3 files (D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll) from the "MS" folder contained in the "dgVoodoo2" download,
into the Game folder, The intro and Newsreel play and I'd suspect so would the ingame movies.

To start EAW, just right click the EAW.exe, and select "open"
I also have Nglide installed for Glide.

Exactly, just try copying the Gog dll's and stuff into a folder with a code group 1.28, etc or even 1.2

AFAIK they don't have a code version. They most likely just used a codegroup 1.28 subversion, if what you say is true, if the byte size is the same. There were dozens of .exe versions passed around in testing the crc / md5 or sha etc hashes won't match the release version anyway.
The TCP, etc like is all cut off by their dlls, etc or DX DRaw and Dplay configuration files.

Forget about hacking an .exe with a hex editor, the eaw.exe has thousands of functions and code lines. You can simply have a look at EAW_13_04x-CodeDocs-imagesonly.zip if you want to know more about the code and how it works.

So has anyone tackled to mess of comparing the 128-gog exe and the code-group 128 exe?

Moggy has and they are definitely different. This is what he wrote:

I've now managed to find a copy of the very first 128 release to compare against the GOG file.

Ultracompare says there is a 21,417 byte difference in the exes. The d3d.dll files are identical

Repacing the GOG exe with the original 128 exe restores all the multiplayer options - but you don't get the smacker videos.
You also don't get some of the cloud layer oddities when using widescreen

In my tests, the original 1.28 in the GOG setup doesn't play the smacker videos, but does get horizon fog in D3D in game. Same result for original Microprose 1.2.

FWIW 1.6 also gives me horizon fog in D3D, as does 128C and 129,

Just to clarify re- horizon fog. It is a problem with nvidia cards and not AMD.
I do not get it with nvidia cards in my laptops unless I run glide.
That is why I try to buy PCs with AMD cards.
My later laptop has both, but the nvidia prevails and I need to use glide.

I'll check things on them again wink

I inherited Krys' old machine she used for photographic work so it has an AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz.

I already did all the swapping around of exe's and dlls and wrappers. The gog release crashed without the gog DX wrapper too, no smacker vids.

I just couldn't get the results that the GOG release gave me, the fog and the double fps where obviously only in the gog release.
So its a hack then?

To start EAW, just right click the EAW.exe, and select "open"
I also have Nglide installed for Glide.

I tried that several times ,but Win10 is different, for some reason the dgvoodoo2 directx stuff wont work, it always seems to use the system files.

I've found another direct input dll, I have nothing to test it on but it should work the same or better than the supplied dinput.dll.
There is nothing to configure however, it just is placed by itself in the EAW main folder, and operates that way.

dinputto8 - (elishacloud) -
https://github.com/elishacloud/dinputto8
A dll module that is designed to improve compatibility in games using DirectInput 1-7 (dinput.dll) by converting all API calls to their equivalent DirectInput 8 (dinput8.dll) ones. This allows older games (like EAW) to be able to use newer tools and wrappers written for DirectInput 8.

Thats your stick, and probably alot of other standard sticks.

I think its for gamepads and HOTAS software that uses dx8 or newer. (and other dx8+ tools). Atleast thats how I understand it to be now.

Aw well.

So as far as the game exe being hacked, what tools do you think GoG (or whom ever) used to do the hacking in such a short time smile

AFAIK the 1.28 source code was never publicly released so I do not believe that it was obtained and modified.
In that case the only possibility is that the 1.28 exe from the public release was hacked.
I would imagine that companies like GoG have disassembly software in order to re-vamp old games, many of which may have no source code wink

While longstanding EAW game developers might object to some of their work possibly have been used (and I respect that), having GOG introduce EAW, I believe, is a significant step forward towards keeping the game alive, which is something we all want.

By dint of EAW being available on GOG, there will likely be many folks trying it out. Possibly they will come here for advice on how to tweak their GOG game, and/or discover other alternatives..

I think this is a significant step forward. I hope MarkEAW is ready for the influx of questions, LOL

I think we all have that sentiment, RIBob. The code group's concern is that our original agreement in obtaining the code stipulated that we never make money off any work we do. Now someone is selling it, and that may be a violation of the agreement.

RIBOB, I have made changes to the site in response to the "questions" and issues that arose. Mostly it was just the controler issies, but there where a few other things.

GoG defiantly brought new blood to the table so to say. They even advanced us with there hack of of the un-official 1.28. So much so I was enthused. Since 128 contains bug fixes that a previous section of the community made a list of they wished would be fixed back in 2001.
The only draw back is those engine only hit bubbles.

I understand your comments and understand the possible (and legit) gripes from game developers. Still, I think that "GoG defiantly brought new blood to the table so to say." will be of long-term benefit to EAW. That's what we all seek.

Once folks come here, they can take advantage of what the game developers have offered. I think this will all work out, in the end, to the benefit of the Game Developers, and for the EAW community as a whole.

This will certainly make you modify some portions of your EAW Help Site. I hope I have assisted by asking stupid questions in the past, and so preparing you LOL All the Best, Mark!

Who were they defying?

To be honest with the number of reviews of the product at GoG and the posts in the GoG EAW forum I am not sure that much GoG related new blood has arrived at SimHQ frown

I am still very annoyed that GoG released an edited version of our work without permission.

Perhaps we over-estimate the number of people who buy games that are interested in, even aware of, modding them. Anyway, it's great to see all the old blood that has been knocking around here recently!

A lot more people jumped on board , more so than the last 15 years has, and in a very short period of time.

I encourage players to get the Gog version when every I can. I'm thinking the hit bubble issue could be resolved with the exchange of FLT files.
Perhaps GoG will use just that, v1.2 hitbubles, then players will have more fun.

I particularly liked the comment from the guy who was FIVE when EAW was released. Things keep going the way they are and we're going to need to change the name to EAW-TNG (the next generation).

I did notice that there was no mention of this forum. Is that a no-no in their comments section? If not, it might behoove us to get involved over there.

Well with GoG agreeing with our concerns re- what you refer to as "the old defunct agreement" they have replaced their 1.28 version with their new version of EAW 1.2.
I can confirm this, as I bought their new release this morning.

It now leaves us in a situation that we can support the users of their new 1.2 without reservation smile

If you had left off the "right!" at the end of your sentence you would have been just fine. As is, it looks like an attempt to foment disagreement.

In the interest of forum comity, if you edit your statement, I'll delete mine.

Jel, you have patiently done great work here. This, combined with the rejuvenation of Tally Ho, will give a great boost to EAW, while leaving open the opportunity of new players to avail of the development of the code over the years. Much thanks.

I can 'vet' your new facility very positively!

GOG have provided a version of the game with the option for widescreen, independent of OS or graphics card, as far as I can deduce. I think most of the new people would have an expectation for 1920x1080, a resolution option which you have provided in the new OAW. I foresee difficulties for some who might wish to try some of the code group setups, as they may experience some graphic degradation, leaving some to choose between Glide at 4x3 or stretched; or the absence of horizon fog.

One downside of the return to 1.2 from 1.28 is making selections on the mission parameters screen frown
In 1.28 to accommodate what were at that time fast computers we added a delay routine after a mouse-click. Otherwise the selections were jumping all over the place, and this is now happening in the GoG 1.2, especially as today's PCs are even faster frown

Interesting, I am running a recently upgraded - although still not a hot rod, I suppose - computer with pretty decent specs. I am running the 1.2CE version on it, which is the Cockpit Editor. It was based on the original 1.2x code, one of the very first compiled, with very few - if any - mods to it other than getting it set up to compile in debug mode ( needed for the internal Cockpit Editor and World Editor too), so basically it's 1.2. I'm running it in Windows 10, D3D at 1920x1080 resolution, and other than no horizon fog, there aren't any glitches at all. I can even run the old 2D cockpits no problem. I also tried an install using 1.2, the no cd fix, and Blackadder's Ardennes, again no issues. No image stretching, either. I did have a glitchy issue at first, but simply deleting the ini and restarting took care of that. I haven't even attempted a wrapper though, so I can't speak about the glide. I have not tried the GOG version....

My biggest issue with the gog version is that my joystick controls are mostly non responsive.

Some people have had success with this issue by removing dinput.dll from EAW directory of the GOG release.

See https://www.gog.com/forum/european_air_war/joystick_issue

Is the 1.2-GoG rollback release still a special eaw.exe?

With all the features re-enabled like they hacked into 128?

I think so, but I cannot confirm the horizon fog issue because I do not have an nvidia card.
Good framerates, and it can run in a window.
On the down side they are back to the pathetic 1.2 multiplayer system, you cannot select night missions, there is no gun convergence, and worst of all single mission parameter selection is difficult.
When 1.28 was released computers were already much faster than they were when 1.2 was released. 1.28 had a delay system to fix the single mission selection issues, but 1.2 does not frown

Yeah the mission selection I suspected would still have a fast loop. (VBH disabled it in his FXEXE exe to over come it.)

Well no reason to get it I guess, for me I'm speaking for. Not anyone else.

It can work like this:
A new user purchases the GoG 1.2.
Then the user downloads the new patch and applies it to a copy of their EAW folder.
In addition to the theatres and front end the GoG 1.2 exe is replaced by the GoG 1.28 exe.
That is the only file in the patch that has GoG work in it, but it also has our work in it, so there are no grounds for complaint as they got their money from the sale of the 1.2 version in the first place.

eh, by patch your referring to the OAW front-end program?
The registered CDF files where worked on / modified by the code group, at least some of them where in 128 package/archive.
Wouldn't the 128-GoG eaw.exe need those special files to run as expected?

But your saying you want to use the hacked 128-GOG released eaw.exe for your own purposes without asking them for the hacked parameters first?
Hmm. Well its not up to me
.
But If I where you I'd show proper support for the old but super EAWv1.2-GoG digital download to drive purchases first. None of this standalone stuff and inc register game data....
But again thats upto you.

I'm just saying. *shrugs*

I think they would be happy with that. As long as the "patch" / OAW front-end does not include reg files.

https://eaw.neocities.org/codegroup-patches.html#128
I have a list of files on that help doc link of the reg files needed for 128 to function.

So only in my opinion you can't do that. (I'm not speaking for Tommo/Retroism or GoG or any developer).

Up to you. I clearly just want it to be informed.

EDIT: But I do like it as an option to use 128-gog or 12-gog.

It is a true patch and not a stand-alone version. It must be applied to a copy of an existing GoG installation.
The only file that is not 100% ours or public domain material is the 1.28 GoG eaw.exe.

Mr Jelly thanks for the continued work you do on EAW it’s appreciated. Hope it’s okay to ask a question. I purchased the 1st version of EAW that was available on Gog and downloaded and installed quick shot II, seems to run fine. I’m a SP flyer not really interested in MP, does your patch add more etc to the game than quick shot?
Again many thanks mate

Wouldn't that be 'Great Shot II'? A great add-on, would really immensely sharpen up the GOG version.

I bundled up Great Shot as a "complete set" for OAW 128, and it works out really well.

HTH Mr Jelly

EDIT: Scratch that, for some strange reason i now get music but a black screen on Great Shot II ??? ...the OAW patch dated March 31st however works perfect, such a shame as Great shot II looks really good

You'll find it in Tally Ho>Community Page>EAW Frontlines>Black Adder's Self-Installing Campaigns, where it is described both as Great Shot and Great Shot II, but I think it's actually the latter.

That’s brilliant Mr J, you’ve got Great Shot II working with the Gog 1.28 original release or the 1.2 version ? I’m on the earlier Gog 1.28 release with the excellent OAW patch, again thanks it’s a great easy way to change theatres, planesets ect. cheers

I made a link to a patch to install "Great Shot II" in the GoG-OAW set-up.
It was posted in the "Patch for owners of the GoG release of EAW" thread, but this is the link if you want it smile

Mr Jelly, your the man..excellent stuff. Really appreciated thanks so very much for yours and others continued work on EAW.
I cannot understand it either, it’s so easy and simple to use? It even unloads previous theatres before starting a new one so your not left with loads of files clogging everywhere up. Truly brilliant stuff. cheers

The only trouble with OAW and other file-managers used with any of the exes before 1.28e is that the continual pasting of 100s of files into the root folder and their later deletion can fragment HDDs.
The "Dir.set" system introduced in 1.28e stopped this. Only one file is pasted to change the theatre, and just two more to change the plane-set wink

Broke down and grabbed the GOG version earlier,,At first It was running in a window but looked and found the D#D setup thing and got it full screen now..But seems a bit stretched I think I can fix that but not sure what setting it is Aspect Ratio ???.But It's good to start with a clean 1.2 setup..Next up is to grab Jelly's patch setup,Hopefully I'll get it in right by going through the posts in order..One thing I noticed on install is all my flight sims go to C:\Flight I entered that on the install and now I have a second C:\Flight directory no worries just a weird thing..And it has the ugly stock terrain I need to fix that, then it's to Sandbaggers and figure out how to add some of the campaign setups in..Notably GSII and SWOTL.But it starts fine..clear menu screens and runs well in glide.Well worth the $5

Russ this is from the "patch" thread:
[Linked Image]

There are three versions of the ETO set-up with nice terrains for Autumn, Summer and Winter.

SWOTL is already in, and there is a download link for GS II in the "patch" thread.

You will need to experiment with the "dxcfg.exe" to get it running the way you want. That may also involve editing the width and height in the "eaw.ini" file.
It should run well in d3d- glide may not be needed.

Thanks Tony Yes I'll just start at the first pot and go through them one at a time to make sure I get all the fixes..I like what I see on your post.Only thing I would like to see is BOB.Right now it's running well at 1024X768..Clear menu screens and even though the main screen appears to be stretched the game looks fine except for the stock terrain. But knowing you improvements will follow along..Best $5 I've spent on a game.
