A rumor regarding competition:

Quote
Report: Intel Signs Contract To Outsource CPUs To TSMC’s 3nm Process

A massive claim has just been made by Taiwan's leading newspaper, DigiTimes: Intel has apparently signed a contract with TSMC to fabricate core CPU product lines [signed] in 2020 on their 3nm process. This, if true, would change the dynamics of the x86 industry completely next year. Keep in mind, we are definitively tagging this report as a rumor until further confirmation

TSMC's 3nm is roughly comparable to Intel's 5nm process and an outsource to TSMC would be akin to the company retaking its initial process lead.

The largest order is for CPUs that will use TSMC’s 3nm process slated to enter mass production in the second half of 2022

Supposedly, AMD is already signed up for 5nm late this year and is on track for 3nm - from TSMC. The chart below was nominally the Intel time-line - using TSMC will speed it up.

Intel's first graphics card for PCs is only used in prebuilt OEM systems. Its actually a laptop chip on a PC GPU. The headline tells the story:

Quote
Intel DG1 GPU Teardown, Failed Benchmarks, and Why It Won't Work on Most Systems

This laptop chip does not translate to a PC GPU. But, Intel is not trying to sell it to other than OEMs who use it with special PC motherboards.

Its a first step into the PC GPU business -- but not a competitor for AMD or Nvidia.

AMD promises additional RX 6900/6800 reference cards to be available in the first quarter

It is expected those cards will only be available directly from AMD and at MSRP.

Samsung plans to grow large in the leading edge technologies. That's good. The industry needs the Competition.

Samsung Expected to Attain Fourth Position for Matured Nodes in 2021; TSMC Holding First Place Thanks to Rapid Chip Advancements

Samsung ranks fourth place because it’s only focused on advanced nodes such as 10nm, 7nm, and 5nm, not legacy node production, like the remaining two companies. ... it’s the 3nm node that should determine if Samsung has the resources and talent to catch up to its biggest rival [TSMC] in the semiconductor race, and it looks like we see some progress.

Yup, right now, the R5 5600X is considered the "best solution" for a gaming system.

Right now, I'm building a gift-system for my Step Son and waiting for an R5 5600 (no X) at MSRP -- which is the cost effective solution for how he will use it.

But, I can't find one, yet. You found yours thumbsup

Now some are guessing that new AMD CPUs and GPUs in good supply at MSRP will not happen until late Summer 2021.

Until then, prices will be normally be higher than MSRP (except at AMD Storefront where they will remain MSRP) and stock will sell out quickly (including at AMD Storefront).

As noted above, AMD expects a restock of the AMD Storefront in March (probably later in March??) -- if one is in the market, be ready to jump when they hit.

AMD Shipped Almost 1M Ryzen 5000 CPUs, Still Couldn’t Meet Demand

AMD shipped nearly a million Ryzen 5000 CPUs in Q4 of 2020.

AMD ramped up sales of the Ryzen 5000 family so rapidly, it beat its own record by more than 2x. “The Ryzen 5000 supply ramp was record-breaking for AMD by a very wide margin,” McCarron told PCMag.

The reason AMD CPUs are hard to find right now isn’t because of yield problems at TSMC. It’s because, even though Ryzen 5000 already accounts for about 20 percent of AMD’s desktop business, the company is selling every single CPU it can make.

In addition, indications are that professionals are dropping Intel systems for AMD systems. Not known how widespread that is.

Chinese GPU miners are now bulk buying GeForce RTX 30 laptops to mine Ethereum

Since late November the value of Ethereum (ETH) has tripled. This cryptocurrency is the most popular one among GPU miners.

Apparently, people are now mass buying laptops with graphics cards such as RTX 3070 to literally stack them on the shelves to mine Ethereum.

Bilibili content creator ‘Fish Pond F2pool’ has made a video (purely for entertainment) to show how easy is to make cryptocurrency on a laptop equipped with a just-released RTX 3060 graphics card.

While sipping coffee at Starbucks the creator has a laptop plugged into the wall socket. It takes 2 hours to mine 0.00053 ETH which equals 0.89 USD, apparently enough to pay for the coffee.

Thus, even certain laptops will be scarce and priced high because "miners" buy those laptops in bulk (not one at a time).

Now we know what we already knew -- mining is costing gamers their cards:

GPU Mining farms are causing power outages in Iran

The country with cheap electricity suffers from the popularity of GPU mining

According to El Chapuzas Informatico, an investigation by Iranian authorities has revealed that recent power outages in Iran have been caused by the growing popularity of mining farms in the country.

Chinese companies are reportedly moving their mining operations to Iran, where the electricity cost is 4 times lower than in mainland China (1.8 to 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour). The country is now allegedly hosting 14 large mining farms that consume around 300 megawatts of power. This is comparable to the power consumption of a city with 100K inhabitants. According to research by the University of Cambridge, Iran is among the six popular destinations for mining farms in the world.

it appears that neither board partners nor NVIDIA have any problem selling those cards to miners. So far we have not heard about any retail store or board partner being punished for taking part in this process.

The GPU mining craze has even affected the recently launched notebooks featuring new graphics cards from NVIDIA.

AMD’s 5nm Next-Generation Zen 4 Ryzen & EPYC CPUs Rumored To Feature Over 25% IPC Increase, 40% Overall Performance Boost Over Zen 3

The AMD Zen 4 core architecture will be fabricated on TSMC's 5nm process node and is expected to launch sometime in 2022.

even possibly (finally) 5GHz all-core thanks to the new (full node) N5 fabrication at TSMC!

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Gaming Laptops Powered Massive Cryptocurrency Mining Farm Spotted in China, Over Hundreds of Ampere Laptops

What's interesting here is that the user has bought these laptops in a bulk order which means that either the retailer, distributor, or the manufacturer itself is openly supporting cryptocurrency miners over actual customers such as gamers which these laptops are primarily designed for. The selling party could be taking advantage of crypto miners by selling these at scalped prices to earn a profit.

A video scans a large room shows racks of many laptops running for cryptocurrency mining (and some human operators). The attached "stills" are just "screen captures" of a couple racks that I quickly made for this post.

The video validates the concept of "hundreds" of laptops -- maybe only 1.5 hundreds smile

30 old and new GPUs are ranked. Folks can read it for themselves, if they are interested.

"Mining" is back in full force to stay for a while. Not much more to say: so, I won't be posting much more about it.

We talk/write about "nodes" (e.g. 7nm node vs 10nm node). Smaller is better. But, those names are only loosely based on the actual size of things.

Quote
How Are Process Nodes Defined?

Process nodes are typically named with a number followed by the abbreviation for nanometer: 32nm, 22nm, 14nm, etc. There is no fixed, objective relationship between any feature of the CPU and the name of the node.

The best way to understand the meaning of a new process node is to think of it as an umbrella term [that describes how well the newer node works versus the older node].

For those interested in the details of how nodes are named -- the link.

What GPU are you pairing it with Blade? You're not going to see much of a difference from a Phenom 965! wink

I moved from an Intel 6700k at 5GHz and 1080ti and paired my 5600x with a 3900 (got tired of waiting for the 6800/XT and 3080 so pulled the trigger). When I'm playing MSFS 2020 at 4K at Ultra I know I made the right decision - it's on a completely different level

I think it's important to consider that budget is always a factor (more specifically, it is *the* factor). So, awesome as I'm sure it is, a 3090 is not necessarily the best choice for every situation. The "right" decision depends on a lot more than sheer performance (which, again, I am sure is wonderful).

In this case, the cost of a 3090 GPU likely exceeds the majority of the new build's component list in total, as an educated guess. Will it outperform a lot of setups? Of course it will, it's a $1500 (+tax) GPU lol

But what has to be considered is the level of performance for the cost.

It also depends on your particular situation: For example, the huge performance gains of 30-series GPUs are actually much less if running at anything *less* than 4k. And while higher resolutions (and VR!) are catching on, the fact is that 1080p gaming still outnumbers all other resolutions *combined* (last I checked, anyhow).

Not at all intended to upset, offend or insult anyone or their hardware buying decisions...to each his own, of course. And I'll say it one more time, to be clear: I am certain the 3090 is awesome.

But budget is always part of the decision. For example, instead of the 5600X - which are indeed remarkable chips...if sheer performance is the goal, then go with a Threadripper CPU/sTRX4 motherboard.

They're only about $4800 for the motherboard and CPU, at the high end smile (of course, the entry-level pair is a bargain at only $2400).

But they'll outright smoke anything else...and surely that's the goal...right? biggrin biggrin biggrin

What makes the 5600X such a great CPU, IMHO is not it's performance - which, having built two in recent months (and two Zen 2's as well), I can tell you is fantastic.

But what makes it so remarkable is the performance at such a modest cost. As above, cost to performance. HIgh-end Threadripper clearly shows there are CPUs that will outperform the (remarkable) 5600X by nearly 4x...but I can't say I know many people who can afford almost $5000 just for a CPU and motherboard.
