The original name for a screwdriver was a turnscrew. Many gunsmiths--especially English gunsmiths and fine woodworkers may still use this term.

Like many old tools made before the days of modern plastics, they had wooden handles (ebony or rosewood mostly), brass ferrules, and hollow ground blade tips to help prevent them from slipping out of a screw slot and either buggering up the screw or the fine wood or metal surrounding it.

Here's a picture of a bone-handled set that Track of the Wolf offers. I got them to go with a cased set of flintlock pistols.
