Some pics taken during the first training mission in the Silent Hunter 3 'academy', a short mission in the Baltic with an unarmed Type VIIB.

Nice, clean shots. I used to play(or try to play)SH3 a lot in a back room we had that was a catch all and full of junk. The clutter and barely any room to move around helped with the immersion and I'd be in there for hours pretending to be a uboat captain.

Unfortunately I have the original SH3 with the el crappo starforce crippling security. Some years ago I tried installing it on Windows 7 using files and tutorial on Subsim.com and got promptly infected with a virus. I'd like to play SH3 again. Doesn't Susbsim sell a digital version of that through their site without the dreaded starforce? I wish GOG would acquire it. That last photo cracks me up. I got many of those looks many a time while we donned our slickers steaming on the surface during ungodly swells. Maybe those looks mean, "Why the heck are we out here right now captain?"

It is available on Steam (4,99 €), most probably on GOG too, if you don`t like Steam

edit: just saw it, GOG has only SH2, got it wrong

I got the good value Steam version despite still having my original Ubi DVD, to save any installation hassle. Apparently there's a utility (SFS?) that enables mods to be used routinely with Steam's SH3; but so far, I'm fine with vanilla Steam SH3 (pre-patched to 1.4b, I believe) l and the two mods I have applied via JSGME work fine (widescreen and now the interior mod). IDK what it is, but I'm finding SH3 to be much better than I remembered it. despite no wolf pack patrol lines, bridges being denuded to man deck guns, the tedious fatigue system, and the hydroplane operators using the back-up wheels instead of the buttons.

Still good to look at, engaging and immersive to play and in my book, SH3 is still the outstanding sim in its field, over 15 years after release.

Agreed. I own them all but whenever I do decide to play, I reflexively install 3.

33lima,

did you ever try GWX 3.0? I highly recommend it! It`s the effort of many modders condensed in this Mega-Mod. Adds tons and tons of cool stuff, ships, tools, shipping lanes, graphics etc., I dont know, how many hours I put into it. I`m currently trying SH4 with the Dark Waters Mod. And I heard the guys at subsim made SH 5 a great U-Boot sim too, will try this one out too, I think. (I guess I have to, my sub career started with Silent Service on the Atart ST, I loved Aces of the Deep for the great campaign.)

Hi Kilosierra and thanks for the recommendation!

I have d/l'ed the GWX 3.0 mod but haven't tried it yet, partly as it appears (from the FAQ on the DEF forum http://www.donitzeliteflotilla.com/forum/index.php?topic=2839.0;wap2 ) that the SFSF 'Steam fix' has to be applied first to get most mods working properly in the Steam version. And the process looks quite complicated (although the description here is comprehensive: http://www.donitzeliteflotilla.com/forum/index.php?topic=2839.0;wap2 ). Basically I don't want to mess up my Steam install while a campaign is acive and TBH I'm not finding too much is left to be desired with vanilla steam SH3. I think the time to try GWX will come when I've finished my current U-100 career.

My copy of SH4 is still shrink-wrapped, something else I'm saving for when I fancy a change of scenery. My impressions of SH5 and U-Boat are based on videos and reviews and neither seems to have the same authentic 'look and feel' as SH3 eg SH5's icons look like something out of a video game while SH3's look like something out of a U-boat; and the newer sim of that name has amongst other things a crazy mission which involves locating a missing U-boat which turns out to be floating empty in the Atlantic??? By contrast, playing SH3 feels like I'm in my own, interactive version of Das Boot (the movie not the dreadful politically-correct TV series). And for all the limitations of SH3's SP campaign (like no wolf packs or escorts into/out of port), I doubt either sim's SP campaign can compare with it.
