Rough one today, Airfield attack caught Ground fire all the way after passing the lines then e/a over target only 3 but worrisome. B Flight had bombs and A Flight covered us as we dropped. Second pass, Mg's the tents and Parked a/c ( saw one with 3 wings ? ) then played tag with a Hun machine , Lewis gun Jammed, my Vickers was barking , but no hits going to fast and peeled off to avoid. Results: Some damage + 2 e/a shot down. However , we lost 3 a/c with pilots + 1 wnd and 2 damage. Looks like replacements coming up to night.

Jasta 19
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM AO RA
108 confirmed kills

Zygmunt and his men were sent near Chalons to patrol enemy territory. They were assured the snow showers were localized and once they reach altitude it will all clear up. Getting to altitude was the real issue. The heavy, grey clouds covered the entire sky and punching a hole in them was a real challenge, but once above them everything cleared up. They had an unobstructed view of the blue skies above and a sea of clouds below them. The unobstructed view was what Ziggy was after. After crossing the lines and dipping their toes into enemy airspace the German Jasta was met by a flight of enemy machines. The Albatrosen had an altitude advantage and soon swooped down on the helpless SPADs. Zygmunt was immediately behind one of the French machines and firing. While tracking his target he didn’t fail to notice the Indian head on the fuselage. He knew these boys, the Amerikaners and not a skilled lot. Perhaps Hess was right? With flying like this it would take ten of them to even think of downing one German pilot. Perhaps it was only a training flight to get the tyros up to speed? In any case these children had no right being up here. Few more shots and the SPAD was going down out of control.

Zygmunt looked for more. He found one soon enough running away home. Ziggy followed and after a while saw the enemy bank to face him. At the same time Scheller followed him from higher up. Hahn pulled up to avoid a head on collision with the enemy. He looked back to see the enemy fly underneath. He then faced forward to see Scheller, who was still following the SPAD, was now on a collision course and nearly collecting Zygmunt in the process. After Hahn composed himself he resumed the pursuit. Scheller was ahead, but the SPAD turned again bringing him closer to Ziggy. He had him now all to himself, or so he thought. Scheller swooped down from above and ahead again, but this time it was a clumsy move and he stalled his plane leaving Hahn to finish the job. The SPAD banked again and this time right in front of Ziggy’s guns. The Spandaus barked for a second. Hahn didn’t think he hit anything, but the SPAD went into a spiral and crashed into the field near the aerodrome. Scheller will be furious.

Next, he watched a duo of triplets battling it out nearby. It was obvious a brace of Albatrosen was pursuing a SPAD in each group. They came very close and the French scout flew under Ziggy’s Albatros. He didn’t waste any time and positioned his plane on the tail of the retreating enemy. It only took a few seconds for the SPAD to tumble down out of the sky and crash on the outskirts of the airfield.

YouTube Link

As he was gaining altitude to get away from the airfield gunners’ range he chanced upon a lone SPAD desperately attempting to get a good vector to land his crate. Zygmunt approached the unsuspecting Amerikaner from behind and calmly lined up his shot. The Spandaus ravaged the wood and canvas, sending the enemy down out of control. It looked like the pilot couldn’t control the plane, perhaps he was dead. As Zygmunt watched, the SPAD levelled out just above the ground and continued straight on. So much for the dead pilot theory. Hahn’s Albatros entered a dive and caught up with the wounded machine. He aimed again and squeezed the triggers. He didn’t let go until the SPAD in front of him disintegrated mid-air.

YouTube Link

By now his men were beginning to form up on him. There was still one SPAD fighting with an Albatros that was following him closely. Ziggy watched from above, but when the Amerikaner looped his plane right in front of Hahn he opened fire immediately. He continued to observe the chase with interest and when he noticed the Albatros, who until now was doing excellent job of pursuing, waning somewhere, Zygmunt took it upon himself to finish the job. He swooped behind the SPAD and fired. The enemy pilot put up a valiant effort, but it was futile. He soon was falling out of control to crash into the ground below.

YouTube Link

With no enemy in sight, Ziggy gave the signal to return back to their side of the mud. He was anxious to return to base. He had a lot of paperwork to fill out.

Later that evening Fuchs was sitting at their usual table. Tybelsky came over with Hahn in tow. The two men put their drinks on the table and sat around the Feldwebel, who was already nursing a drink of his own.
“- Ho, ho! What’s the occasion?” He asked pointing at the drink, knowing well Fuchs doesn’t drink unless there was a reason.
“- I think I shot down my first enemy!” Rudi was about to burst from excitement, but kept it contained until he could share the news with his friends.
“- Well, tell us all about it!” Hahn took a sip of his drink.
“- There we were over the Front ...”
“- Stop, stop, stop!” Tybelsky protested. “- This is not how you start a story of your first victory.” He took out a cigar out of his pocket and popped it in Fuch’s mouth. “- That’s better.”
Zygmunt instantly thought of his old friend Wolff. Was he still managing his cigar factory? He’d missed the old man.
Tybelsky lit up his own cigar and leaned back in his chair. “- You may start now.”
“- There we were over the Front ...”

Robert, he’s no busier than usual. I’ve just decided to split the mission proceedings into bite sized pieces to make it easier to digest, otherwise the video would take too long.
You can watch these on big screen? jawdrop That’s better than Netflix!

Robert, I think there used to be quite a number, but now they’ve all switched sides and probably Lederhosen is the only one left dropping in occasionally to show off his new ride.

Orders 41 Sqn

A Flight Escort duty 5 a/c Load out : Mg's full
B flight: Airfield attack same target as on the 9th. Load out: 4, 25 lb bombs for 4 a/c. 2 Drums (47rds) Lewis + 200 rds Vickers 70 % fuel
C Flight; Maintenance stand down 5 a/c 2 pilots on passes, one on Medical leave.

I thought we bought it that time, Ground fire + 8 Hun machines on the field taking off. I was last over target , the boys did better and mine landed in back of their Tents then head for home. I was glad the flight leader ( Cpt) did not go for a gun run as we might have been chopped. As it was the rotters got close.

I suppose I could get back up if I'm the only Hun left.
Not quite fair to those that fly every day or so.
I'm just not motivated after these long lock down periods.
I'm never alone, with wife and kids around almost 24/7

Thanks for responding Lederhosen. It seems that the German aircraft are a challenge fight and compete in and maybe that is why so few are flying them.
It takes some skill to fight off the nieuports and sopwiths.

That said, Fullofit seems to have found the technique with the Albs.

Lederhosen, I thought WoFF was THE reason to get away from the wife and kids, especially when they’re around 24/7. biggrin

Robert, my technique is to pounce on the poor, unfortunate sod that is flying lower than me.

Carrick, you speak as if your pilot were already dead. Have some faith.

11 January, 1918 10:45
Saint-Loup-en-Champagne, Marne Sector
Jasta 19
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM AO RA
111 confirmed kills

3 of the Amerikaner SPADs have been confirmed.
Hahn knew exactly what this was. The HQ called in about a large formation of enemy planes that was spotted crossing No-Man’s Land and heading towards Saint-Loup. It was a retaliatory action sanctioned after yesterday’s raid Zygmunt’s Jasta executed near Chalons. Sleet or no, the Albatrosen were now rising through the clouds to defend their aerodrome. Ziggy saw them first as they were coming from the south, hoping to be masked by the sun. HQ was right, it was a large formation. He counted eight enemy machines to his own six. Outnumbered or not, he banked to meet the enemy head on. Their leader peeled off and turned back. Well, that would make the odds a bit easier to handle. Something seemed wrong. The reminder of the still large formation was not attacking. Instead, they curved around and presented their rears to Ziggy’s Schwarm. What else could he ask for? Without thinking he targeted the rearmost machine and prepared to send it to hell. He was about to open fire when out of the corner of his eye he caught Flak explosions. The enemy formation leader was back and targeting the Schwarm. Ziggy reacted automatically and broke off his attack to evade the incoming SPAD. It was the same red machine from few days ago. He outfoxed Zygmunt last time and he was about to do it again. The Red Leader blasted by, missing Hahn’s formation. What Zygmunt didn’t realize was that it wasn’t the Frenchman’s aim. He was a distraction. When Zygmunt turned his Schwarm around to face the red SPAD, he exposed his rear to the entire enemy formation that was already turning to intercept. They were now engulfed in a SPAD swarm. The red scout was now forgotten and a battle with two other Franzosen commenced. Him and another Albatros were kept busy by a pair that worked well protecting each other while attacking the German planes. But the stalemate didn’t last long and Zygmunt exploited a mistake one of the SPADs committed by losing too much height in a turn. Instead of following his target, Zygmunt remained high and waited for the perfect moment to strike. The enemy plane had nowhere to hide. Hahn’s guns found their target easily and the SPAD was soon diving to escape the punishment. Zygmunt was not about to let him go and remained stuck to the French machine’s tail, continuing to fire until it crashed into the ground. He was by himself now and was quickly scanning the skies for more targets. He found two dots dancing nearby and decided to investigate. As he got closer he realized one of his men was battling with the Red Leader. Ziggy could feel the corners of his mouth curl up. He would not let this Schwein get away with it this time. He continued to track the two planes twisting around each other. Zygmunt arrived as the SPAD performed another evasive maneuver close to the ground. Hahn’s Albatros swooped down to engage. He saw Mallman making another attempt to bring the enemy down, but it was up to Ziggy to finish the job. He had the red plane in his sights and soon his tracers were stitching the crimson canvas. The pilot in the SPAD put up a valiant effort to avoid the onslaught but it was hopeless. Soon the Red Leader was falling out of control on the edge of the aerodrome which he came to attack. Zygmunt scanned his surroundings for more targets, but the skies seemed free of enemy planes. The mission was over now and all Albatrosen proceeded to land.

Fuchs walked into the Kasino in a foul mood. He kicked one of the chairs, which flew across the floor and crashed against the wall. Tybelsky looked up and asked: “- Are we starting the party early today?”
“- Nein!” Rudi shrugged and plopped on a chair beside Albert.
“- Well? Spill! What’s eating you?” The older pilot put his arm around Fuchs’ neck.
“- I shot down two SPADs today during that raid. One of them on fire, but the stubborn donkeys at the claims office won’t accept my claims without witnesses. How is anyone supposed to witness anything in this snow? I could barely see them myself!” Rudolf was livid.
“- Maybe that is it? Maybe you thought you saw them?” Tybelsky was trying to reason.
Fuchs reacted with the most venomous hiss which made Tybelsky remove his arm away from around Rudi’s neck.
Instead he slapped him on the back. “- Come, let me buy you a drink. No, two drinks. One for each SPAD.” Fuchs waved the offer away.
“- Look, that’s just the way it is. Take Zygmunt for example. If they accepted each of his claims he’d have ...” Tybelsky looked expectantly at Hahn.
Ziggy did a quick calculation in his head and responded: “- Two hundred.”
“- There, two hundred.” Tybelsky paused for a second and looked back at Hahn. “- Two ... hundred?” His voice full of disbelief.
Zygmunt looked back at him and nodded an affirmative.

The Maj is upset with B flight's mission today. The 3 of us were tasked with Escorting a RE 8 on Recon. The Harry Tate was 2,000 ft or so below us as we crossed No Mans Land. A flash passed by us diving and Mg's Ripped two 40 rds or so into the RE then it flipped over and spun in. I dove and was able to cut a string of 18 rds or 22 rds at the Hun, But he rolled and was gone. My mates chased him deeper into Hun land, but lost him in the haze. The Adj said that if we cant do better there is room in the Bloody Infantry for us. The e/a had a Flower painted on the side a Daisy or a Rose ?

Fullofit – I envy the hunting you're getting down on the Marne. All I am seeing in Picardy is snow and cloud.

Carrick – your man keeps plugging away. Take care of him.

Robert, lederhosen – great to see you dropping by and chiming in when you can.

Not much has been happening with RNAS 8 lately…

War Journal of Flight Commander George Ewan MacAlister, DSC

8 Squadron, RNAS
Mont-St-Eloi, France

Part 14

7 January 1918 – inconclusive scrap with Pfalz scouts. That’s what my log says. My memory, however, carries more detail. We encountered a group of eight Pfalz who dived on us. We were seven – myself and Colton, Jordan, White, Price, Munday, and Cumming. One of the Huns got behind me and I could not for the life of me shake him off. His smoke rounds whizzed past and one hit my windscreen. I tried every trick I knew but the Hun was too good. Finally, Price threatened to get behind him and he broke off. By this time I was low down and well out of the fight. Low on fuel, I headed home.

It snowed solid for three days, drifts blocking the roads, our water basins frozen over in the morning, the landscape frosted, grey, and drear. The skipper laid on lectures and we had a cinema night with Charlie Chaplin. But mostly we played ping-pong and endless rounds of pontoon and penny Nap. By 10 January we needed the Chinese Labour Corps to help us clear snow from the field. I attacked a Rumpler that day but took a few rounds into my machine, including one that nicked the collar of my flying coat. I bid the Hun good day and let him run away. My machine was not handling well and I put down at La Lovie, a field near Poperinghe. Had lunch with some Spad merchants and returned to Mont-St-Eloi in the afternoon.

The next two days were uneventful. We flew in snow and low visibility and, predictably, saw nothing.

I have not described our machines. The Camel is a mysterious thing, apt to kill you until you make friends with it. It wants a rich mixture on take off, and then its engine will quit on you seconds after lifting off if you don’t lean the mixture out instantly. It wants full rudder until the tail comes up. Turn too quickly after lifting off and it is liable to spin you into the ground. In the air it turns like a dervish in one direction and fights you in the other. After my episode with the keen Pfalz pilot, I worked on perfecting a snap roll. This is a sort of quick climb and roll that, if well done, may cause a Hun to overshoot. Strangely, I found it slow to develop when done to the right but rather crisp when done to the left. Others have had different experience. As I said, the Camel is mysterious thing. Most of all, I like the twin Vickers. They fire through the propeller using a “CC” synchroniser and have a high rate of fire. Get close enough to a Hun and you can tear his machine apart with a short burst. There are rumours that we may receive new Camels with a British-built Bentley engine. They are supposed to be more reliable and more powerful than our Clergets. We shall see. We shall see.

One bit of sadness. We lost Colton back on 10 January, the day I was damaged by the Rumpler. It is thought the Hun observer got him although no one saw him go down. He was a good fellow and his loss has left us with an empty bed in the cabin. As is tradition, we package his things to send home but parcel out less personal items such as flying kit. I have acquired from him a splendid pair of fur-lined silk gloves to wear under my gauntlets. We also censor any dodgy items found. Colton, for example, had quite a splendid collection of French postcards that would be inappropriate to send to his people back in Hartlepool. It is really a very sad process and I hope I do not have to do it often.

Carrick, maybe it’s better that way. At least your pilot won’t have to write any claims reports.

Raine, there is an easy solution to your problem. Just put in for a transfer to a “quiet” sector. winkngrin
That is a rather intimate description of Camel’s characteristics, but after spending this much time on them who’d be surprised?
Sad news of Colton. Just make sure Stephane doesn’t get a hold of those postcards.

Shredward, that website is totally wrong. It says there Madon died in 1924 when Ziggy took care of him in 1918.

Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM AO RA
111 confirmed kills
Awaiting two claim confirmations

The weather was miserable but at least they’ll be operating above it. Today’s orders were to patrol over friendly aerodrome at Liesse, far up north.
“- Scheiße!” Zygmunt was not in a good mood. As his Albatros was rolling down the airfield and picking up speed he spotted an armada of enemy planes approaching his airfield. Flak was already sending up their greetings.
He banked towards them and saw one of them peel off and dive. Zygmunt was soon behind him realizing these were no Nieuports. These were the large two-seat bombers that flew like scouts. Hahn was careful not to stay too long in the rear gunner’s line of sight. He continued to chip away at the large plane until the port side top plane was blown off and the bomber went down at the edge of the airfield.
Hahn turned his attention towards a large furball close by. It was being entertained by Flak and easily visible. At the last moment he spotted another two-seater right behind him, hiding in the ground clutter and veiled behind a snow curtain. The dance commenced anew. The Bréguet made circles around the Albatros while Zygmunt struggled to prevent his plane from stalling. They were duelling very low, so any accidental loss of control could be fatal. In the end the French pilot out flew himself and Ziggy was able to get on his tail. He then proceeded to make a sieve out of the two-seater’s fuselage. With the engine on fire the bomber went down just at the edge of the airfield.
Zygmunt could then concentrate on another duel some distance away. It was another Bréguet fighting one of Hahn’s wingmen. Ziggy engaged and send a burst towards the large machine. The French pilot realized he was outnumbered and quickly dove to retreat at treetop level. Zygmunt was able to sneak behind and below and continue to fire. The enemy bomber joined his other two countrymen by crashing close to the airfield.

But this was not the end for Hahn. He soon spotted another enemy plane, thanks to the eagle-eyed Flak batteries, which pointed the Staffelführer in the right direction. Hahn expected one more bomber to do battle with, but he was surprised when he was met with a much smaller plane. It was his nemesis - the Sopwith Strutter. He had great respect for the ability and accuracy of the rear facing Lewis in that plane. He would have to fly carefully against this foe. Too many times has he been bested by this machine. He had the Strutter on the back foot from the start, when the two machines merged head on. Zygmunt was sure he hit it with his first burst. From then on, the Strutter could only retreat. This didn’t mean the rear gunner was helpless. Ziggy could see the angry flashes coming from the end of the barrel of the Belgian Rattlesnake. He was behind the two-seater now attempting to finish it off. A lucky shot pierced Zygmunt’s fuel line, but in turn a round from Hahn’s Spandaus pierced Strutter pilot’s major artery. The French two-seater went down near the Aisne River south of the aerodrome, while Ziggy limped back home. His petrol tank emptied on his final approach. The Albatros settled down on the snow covered grass field of the aerodrome with only some groans and creaks of the airframe.

“- Have you seen a balloon burn? It’s Wunderbar!” Fuchs had a smile on his face as he set three drinks on the table and passed one to Hahn and Tybelsky, sitting down and grabbing the last one.
“- Yes, as a matter of fact we’ve seen those sausages burn. Are you telling us you’ve bagged one?” Tybelsky was intrigued.
“- Nein, Rienau got one today. I am still to taste this kind of victory.” Rudolf responded, still wearing a grin on his face. “- The drinks are to celebrate my second Luftsieg. I’ve shot down a SPAD! Prost!” Fuchs took a swig from his glass and made a sour face. The young Feldwebel was still getting used to a man’s drink.
“- Well done! A SPAD. How did you manage this?” Zygmunt was proud of Tybelsky’s protégé.
“- It’s a very interesting story. Leutnants Rienau and Scheller went down to take out the gasbag and the rest of us circled above and watched. That was when Leutnant Mallman noticed the enemy machines approaching and he waggled his wings to let us all know. We then attacked. I followed Mallman and when he finished his run, it was my turn. I got behind the tan biplane and opened fire. The bus ahead wobbled, then turned upside down and went into the ground. We then saw the balloon go up in smoke and returned quickly back home. I was hit by ground fire and didn’t want to stick around any longer.” Rudi made a gesture as if he were dusting off his hands to signify his story was over. The two men congratulated him on his latest victory and finished their drinks.

"Take the cylinder out of my kidneys,
The connecting rod out of my brain, my brain,
From out of my arse take the camshaft,
And assemble the engine again."
