For the want of a better term, it is an air speed indicator (speedometer).

Air speed indicator? I couldn't tell what it was. Thanks, Beard.

I think it's an anemometer, which (by measuring wind speed) is used to indicate air speed. See here: >link<

What you are seeing there are the secret trials for the Xenobia Death Ray. That film was ordered destroyed.

We will remember them.

Ahhh, I see. You had to know it was something sinister. Darn radicals. (And it would've worked, too, if it weren't for those meddlin' kids...)

They were expected to read that from the cockpit?

I think it's more of a general thing - like the indicator was big enough they could see the range it was in, telling them enough I suppose. Kinda like if you have a clock with hands at home you're used to seeing from a distance, you might learn to recognize the time. Also, I suppose those guys had fairly decent eyesight as well, what with either recognizing planes from far away, or being the fate of 'natural selection' should they fail.

I'm not 100% sure that's what it is anyhow, just sort of looks like one to me. It could be something entirely different. I don't suppose it's impossible that it could be a 'sensor' for a remote unit, being electrically wired back to a gauge in the cockpit - but that's a complete fabrication; I wouldn't know whether that sort of instrument existed at that time.

I bet Sandbagger could tell us, if he were to visit.

@OP, a wind-powered speedometer (anemometer as indicated by KK). Seems the high-speed ones go up to 250 kph, low-speed ones (maybe for two-seaters??) go to about the 120-150 kph range.

More info. on this thread at The Aerodrome:

It has a lead seal on it. Could they be tampered with?

*heh* Anything can be tampered with....

I think, as was mentioned in one of the links above IIRC, the seal is more like a 'calibration' thing than to prevent or evidence tampering.

I've been waiting for Jim to weigh in, but in his absence, I will note that you will not see it as a standard piece of equipment on Alb DIIs.
Cheers,

You guys are doing a good job of things.

I'll add that mounted on the wing spar like that, it wasn't that far from the cockpit. Less than ten feet. They could easily read it.
