I think it's an anemometer, which (by measuring wind speed) is used to indicate air speed. See here: >link< They were expected to read that from the cockpit?

You guys are doing a good job of things.
I'll add that mounted on the wing spar like that, it wasn't that far from the cockpit. Less than ten feet. They could easily read it.
Yes, well, at 74 years old ten feet is a long way for me! Good job those boys were under 30!!
