Merry Christmas to all honourable Fliegers and the execrable adversaries. Happy holidays also to all the readers, spasmodic or otherwise.

Lou, that is a nice image of Christmas Truce. It just needs a man in a red flight suit.

Raine, all the best to you in this holiday season as well. May this Christmas be merry, satiating and most of all safe.

Carrick, is that a Christmas Wreath Thorpe is building?

Bob and MFair, glad to see you around. All the best to all of you.

Hess was successful in securing the escort duty for Jasta 19 today. They were to escort 3 DFW’s from FA(A) 272 on a recon of enemy territory south of Suippes.
They were approaching their rendezvous point. Three silhouettes were overflying the Schwarm, but these were not the silhouettes of DFW’s. Ziggy was right. Two-seaters always attracted enemy planes and it was time to reap the benefits. The three Strutters dove on Hahn and his three wingmen. He expertly dodged the attack from the first of them. Then shook off the second by barrel rolling. The Strutter followed but it’s roll rate appeared to be inferior and Zygmunt found himself at the rear of his attacker and firing. Dark smoke appeared behind the target and after further liberal use of the Spandaus, the French machine began to list to port. Lower and lower it went, caught some tree branches with its wingtip and promptly crashed into more trees. Hahn was already looking for the next victim. He found it being chased by Leusch and Jumpelt. He joined them and together they brought the second Strutter down in flames. Mallman was away chasing the last of the invaders. The Schwarm returned back to base leaving Schwarm Eins to escort the DFW’s to the front lines and back.

Ziggy was waiting for Hess to return from the escort duties. He expected the C.O. to congratulate him on the fine idea and the downed enemy planes. Instead the news came soon after that the recon flight and the escort were jumped by SPADs and were overwhelmed. Ernst Hess did not return to base after the mission. By the evening it was confirmed the C.O. had been shot down. The Christmas Eve dinner was subdued with little talk and a solemn toast to the fallen warrior. Zygmunt felt responsible for the loss of the Jastaführer and his friend.

Fresh snow started to come down to try and make this a white Christmas. The Strutter claim has been denied. Hahn didn’t care. With the death of his C.O. weighing heavily on his conscience, his score meant nothing to him anymore. The French press announced Hess was killed in combat by Adjutant De Kargolay from Escadrille N.96. If Zygmunt ever comes across this dog ...
For now he was assigned temporary command of the Jasta. Despite his protests he would continue to perform the temporary C.O. duties until a proper replacement arrived. This meant Ziggy would once again lead Schwarm Eins.
The call came in to scramble right away and intercept enemy planes heading for Liesse aerodrome. They were the only Jasta available in the vicinity to take on the task. They would have to treat their engines very roughly to arrive in time. They were all in a rush to get to their machines and take off. Zygmunt was up and looked behind just in time to see two SPADs dive on him. He began to evade, but was hit. He could see other Albatrosen still on the ground being attacked by the enemy planes.

It was a disaster. Three machines were destroyed on the ground. Everyone else was badly shot up. There was no way they could continue with their mission. The French executed a perfect ambush.

In the afternoon they went to the frontlines to patrol between north of Bouy and Sillery. Ziggy didn’t get far. His Mercedes called it quits soon after take off. He managed to nurse his plane back to Saint Loup for repairs.

Merry Christmas, all!

----- While on evening patrol on December 19th, 1917, Sgt. Grey found himself alone, having lost sight of his flight in the dark. He flew alone for some time, briefly joining a flight of seven Sopwiths before bidding them farewell once more and going into German lines in search of his comrades. Near Laon, Sgt. Grey spotted Capt. Ortoli being attacked by two Albatros. Retaliating, he first killed the pilot of one German craft before turning to engage the other. As he merged with the remaining German, he deftly flicked his SPAD around to get on his opponent's tail. However, he had an excess of speed, and so swerved to the right to avoid the collision. The German pilot inexplicably also swerved in the same direction - causing the collision that Grey had sought to avoid. The Albatros fell away in pieces - but Grey's Spad had miraculously stayed together. Unfortunately, the collision had gravely wounded Sgt. Grey, who circled down to land in German lines. He had expired before the first German troops had reached him.

Wulfe, sorry to find out of Grey’s untimely demise. At least he had the decency to take out the kite that caused the collision. Normally your crate falls to the ground in pieces, while the other plane flies on and tries to figure out what that “thump!” was.
On, to the next aviator!

As the acting Staffelführer of Jasta 19 Zygmunt decided to add a green band to his Albatros’ fuselage in honour of his fallen commander. The band has been the previous C.O.’s identifying mark.
The patrol over enemy aerodrome at Tilloy was uneventful. They’ve arrived over the target and were chased away by heavy Flak. Fortunately they were all able to return home in one piece.

The SPAD that Zygmunt shot down two days ago during the ambush has now been confirmed.
The morning sun made its lazy way up into the sky as the alarm bell continued to clang while the pilots were climbing into their machines.

[Linked Image]

A call came in earlier that an enemy formation was spotted heading towards their aerodrome. They were circling the airfield for a while and it was only when they reached 3000 meters that they were able to spot the enemy formation. More SPADs and in greater number than their own. Two of them stuck to Ziggy and it was difficult to shake them off. Finally he was able to get behind one and damage it sufficiently to send him packing out of control. The second one was close by and Hahn had to concentrate to stay with him. During one of their head on passes Zygmunt thought he hit him and when he came around for another go, he saw the foe tuck his tail between his legs and run. The Albatros had no chance of catching him. They all returned home after the battle was done.

The sun was already low, ready to set soon. Despite approaching darkness Ziggy’s Schwarm was ordered to defend nearby Saint-Remy airfield. Hahn was alert and noticed the approaching SPADs. One of them after Zygmunt’s Albatros. Ziggy slipped behind him and began his pursuit. It was one irritating target, bobbing up and down constantly. That really threw his aim off, but little by little he made progress and damaged the SPAD which now trailed a plume of grey vapour. A little more of bobbing and the French machine entered an inverted flat spin. There was no getting out of that.
He quickly looked around to find another SPAD in front. This one behaved properly and did not resort to bobbing. Instead, his tactic was to turn circles with the Albatros, surprisingly well enough to keep up. Hahn reversed direction, but the enemy followed, still keeping Zygmunt’s guns out of reach. Hahn switched directions again, but with no effect. The crazy circle continued. Ziggy was running out of ideas. His next move was a double switch and that finally confused the enemy. He made one turn too many and presented Zygmunt his tail. Hahn took full advantage of the situation and sent the second SPAD down to crash below.
There were more. Hahn saw a SPAD chasing after an Albatros. He quickly pointed the nose of his plane in that direction to help, but it was too late the German pilot crashed, but Zygmunt was able to send a few rounds into the front end of the French machine. Now he was behind him and after a few more long bursts, the heavy biplane staggered and keeled over, smashing into the ground soon after.
He saw two more silhouettes in the distance sparring with each other. It felt to Zygmunt as if he were running around and putting out fires. He made his way to the pair and swooped down on the enemy’s tail with one smooth motion. Only one burst and the enemy was rolling on his back and crashing into a field below.
He thought it was over. He could see the rest of the Albatrosen licking their wounds and filing one by one into a landing pattern. There was no more Flak. The Franzosen were gone, or so he thought. There, in the distance he spotted one trying to get away at treetop heights. He was on him in a minute and sprayed it with both Spandaus as they merged. Ziggy banked one way, the SPAD the other. When they came together for the second time, Ziggy’s Albatros was right behind him and with one burst sent the SPAD down to crash into another field.
It was over now. All remaining pilots returned home. All except Unteroffizier Schiesser.

Carrick – Your new man is doing well. Keep up the good work.

Fullofit – Ziggy continues to amaze. What was Toby's final score? Ziggy looks to be set to pass him. By the way, the expression on that German soldier receiving his Christmas parcel makes me wonder if it is not his new supply of kiddie porn. Creepy!

Lou – Thank you for the DSC and for your wonderful Christmas posts.

Wulfe – I was very saddened to see Bill go so soon. I really hope that you will dive back in after Christmas. We all love your story so much.

MFair – Good to see you dropping in. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the best in the New Year.

Buckeye – Thanks for the good wishes and stay tuned for 1918.

Epower – Warm wishes for a wonderful Christmas and New Year for you and SWMBO!

"I turned for a second pass and this time saw the Hun machine – a Hannover – catch fire."

We had a couple of days of filthy weather followed by an escort patrol down the lines with no Huns about. At last, on Saturday 22 December, we were dispatched north towards Ypres to chase off some Hun machines that had the idea they could spot for artillery over our positions. They must have heard we were coming for they were gone when we arrived. I lead the flight, which included our squadron commander, on a circuit of the salient. There was a good view of the battlefields around Passchendaele where the Canadians had finally consolidated positions on the ridge. The frozen landscape was marked by shell crater on top of shell crater with broken threads of duckboard winding among the pockmarks. Each hole was filled with water which was now turning to ice and fringed with snow. The PBI must have given thanks for the coming of this dreadful weather. Now they could stand on the water that filled their trenches rather than wade in the mud.

After nearly ninety minutes we turned toward home, but almost immediately encountered a group of Pfalz scouts. The fight began slowly as machines lunged at each other’s formations in twos and threes. It it reminded me of a boxer testing his opponent in the early stages of a prize fight. The wind was from the northwest and blew us towards the River Lys. There the engagement became general and I found myself behind a Hun who had Jordan in his sights. My first burst sent him down out of control and eyesight him crash just forward of our own lines. Moments later, another Hun dived at me. I was able to roll out of his view and let him overshoot. After two bursts the right upper wing of the Pfalz broke away and the machine fell to earth. Then I was alone and returned to Mont-St-Eloi without seeing another machine. We all returned safely and my two Pfalzes were confirmed, bringing my bag to twenty-two.

From there to Christmas there was only occasional flying and nothing exciting to report. The RFC padre visited us and told us of a family in the village that was struggling. The father had been killed at Verdun, leaving the mother with two young girls and a boy. He asked if we could do something to help them out and we put together a parcel of gifts for the children and a basket of treats for the mother. Then we prepared a goose and piled into our tender to visit the household. The experience was heartwarming and the poor woman, whose name was Janine, was in tears. The village doctor was there to see one of the little girls and was effusive in his thanks on behalf of the people there. He left us with Janine for several minutes and returned with two bottles of Norman apple brandy and we had a good singsong. The young boy is named Stephane and he was quick to pick up a few words of English – all the wrong ones, of course. Johns taught him to address Squadron Commander Draper as the “workhouse master.” By the end of the afternoon we had convinced Janine to allow Stephane to work at the aerodrome and we planned to teach him to be an orderly.

On 27 December we were fitted with bombs to drop on the Hun aerodrome at Aniche. I claimed an albatross on the ground but credit ended up with Dennett, whose bomb scored a direct hit just after mine. Unfortunately we did not do enough damage to satisfy headquarters and were sent back the next day. I say unfortunately because Aniche is nearly thirty miles over the lines and low work that far over is a bit dicey. We shot the place up well this time and I finally signalled for us to regroup. The Hun aerodrome at Emerchicourt was just ahead of me and I spotted a fat two-seater sitting in the middle of the field. On my first pass I sent the air century packing and hit the two-seater. I turned for a second pass and this time saw the Hun machine – a Hannover – catch fire. Colton had joined up by this time and confirmed my claim for number twenty-three.

Carrick, it takes practice and a lot of restraint to fly only once a day.

Raine, I think Toby stopped at 129 confirmed, but I don’t think Ziggy will do a drunk-transfer to Hannovers to emulate him.
As to the looks of that soldier, well ... we can’t all be porn star stunt doubles.
Looks like the Germans don’t even bother sending any planes up anymore. They just let George take care of them on the ground. It’s easier that way. Congrats on the latest claims.

Only one of the five SPADs had been confirmed. The rest were either claimed by Flak batteries or could not be ascertained due to the general confusion reigning over the aerodrome during the attack.
The bad weather rolled in and the Staffel prepared for an extended period of being stuck on the ground while the snow continued to cover the world in its pristine white blanket.

They should not have been flying today and not because of the lack of sleep or the wicked hangovers they’ve all been nursing after the New Year celebrations. The snow continued to come down and accumulate heavily on the ground and the airfield, yet the orders stood. Eliminate the observation balloon south of Reims. They dutifully mounted their machines and proceeded to the target area, but before they could reach the frontlines, they were attacked by a flight of what soon became clear were SPADs. This lot had the green brown and tan camouflage, unlike any Ziggy had seen up until now. In the confusion Zygmunt was left unscathed and observed the proceedings. He soon picked out a train of machines following each other and engaged. The SPAD he was after soon was found beneath and behind. Zygmunt slowed his Albatros as much as he could and waited for the enemy to pass below. When he did, he opened fire and soon was following the enemy in a dive. Ziggy’s mount complained of the stress caused by the speed exerted during the dive but Hahn wouldn’t relent. He continued to follow his prey only to find out the enemy’s dive was terminal.

YouTube Link

By now the rest of his Schwarm was chasing the remaining SPADs across the lines and toward their airfield. When he arrived the battle raged on. Zygmunt soon latched onto the tail of one of the French machines and chased it down to crash into the ground. He looked around to find more enemy planes above mixing it with the Albatrosen. It didn’t take long for him to catch one and shoot it down over the French airfield. As Hahn was retreating from the field he noticed one of the tan machines fly by and then latch on to the Albatros’ tail. This pilot was good and easily kept up with Ziggy’s Albatros, perforating it in the process. Zygmunt had to employ some of his more elaborate tricks to lose his attacker and in turn get behind him. It seemed odd that the machine went into an uncontrolled dive after only a few of Ziggy’s rounds found their mark. He fully expected his foe to recover near the ground and run away, but that was not the case. The tan SPAD smashed into the ground allowing Zygmunt to cross the lines and return home unmolested.

106 confirmed kills

Two of the SPADs from yesterday have been confirmed.
There was more snow below and frigid blue skies above today. Ziggy was leading his Schwarm on the second circuit of patrolling enemy front lines north of Rosnay when he noticed three dots in the distance north of him. They were well into German held territory, so it was a safe bet they could be friendly, but he wasn’t going to bet on it just yet. Hahn brought his flight closer for a look-see. They seemed silver from this distance. Could they be Nieuports? But there was no Flak chasing them at all. Were the boys downstairs asleep? Perhaps these were Pfalzen? They needed to get closer. One of the dots dove down. No, definitely not Pfalz creations. These had rotary engines. Definitely Strutters. They were bigger than Nieuports, and slower, and not as nimble. By the time Ziggy arrived at this conclusion, the enemy planes were upon them. He sprayed one while engaging it head to head. He then reversed and went after the other. The rear gunner wasn’t asleep and returned fire. Zygmunt immediately remembered the last time he was chasing a silver Strutter. It didn’t end well for him. He followed the French two-seater from a distance, being careful not to give the enemy too easy of a shot, but the gunner continued to find him and continued to perforate Ziggy’s poor mount. In the end Hahn decided to slink away from the battle with an overheating engine. The Strutter was not worth the risk.

On his way back the engine ceased and Hahn was able to glide as far as the Prouvais Woods. There, he decided to set his sick Albatros down along the railroad tracks. He was doing well until he was forced into a narrow valley and he soon realized his wingspan was wider than the snowbanks on both sides of the train tracks. First his port wing hit the side then his starboard went into the other side. The Albatros’ wings then conformed to the shape of the gully and dropped the entire aircraft down to the ground. Zygmunt was safe, but his plane was a mess. While dismounting his stricken aeroplane, the wheel axle broke allowing the left wheel to come off. The jolt caused by this failure threw the unfortunate pilot off the top of the fuselage and into the snow bank. Ziggy inhaled lungfuls of frozen powder while clumsily digging himself out of the bank. It took the rest of the day to recover his stricken machine.
