I've always been fascinated with and a fan of Jefferson, having visited his home several times since a young age. I've read biographies before but this one is excellent. Jon Meacham covers every aspect of his public life as well as private life. Over 500 pages, plus 200+ pages of notes and bibliography, I still finished it in less than 3 weeks reading periodically. Surely America owes our success more to no other one man.

How fortunate we were to have no less than 2 polymaths, Jefferson and Franklin, involved in our founding as a nation.

I visited Monticello back in 2000 and the first thing that struck me was just how tiny everything looked. The furniture, the rooms, the width of the hallways, etc.

I have it, was planning to read it soon, though I have been less inclined to do so given Meacham's recent political shenanigans.

Food was also much more expensive relative to wages and the great majority of people worked manual labor jobs.
