WIKI: This reading was broadcast during the 9th orbit of the moon by Apollo 8 and it is estimated that a quarter of the people alive at the time saw it either live or delayed. The Apollo 8 broadcasts won an Emmy Award.

Apollo 8 was the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, and also the first human spaceflight to reach another astronomical object, namely the Moon, which the crew orbited without landing, and then departed safely back to Earth These three astronauts — Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders — were the first humans to witness and photograph an Earthrise, to photograph the whole Earth disk and to photograph the Moon from a spacecraft.

You forgot, the first humans to see the far side of the Moon.

Maybe, but even back then people tried to sue the government over it.

What a view that Earthrise is though.

I am not a religious man, but that reading of Genesis is something special. I can’t think of anything more fitting for that exact moment. Very powerful. That scene from the Apollo 8 episode of From The Earth To The Moon is one of my favourites from that brilliant series.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
