Right now I’m very skeptical considering the script problems we saw with both Prometheus and Covenant but I will try and keep an open mind and hope for the best.

I've watched all the Alien films, for me the best one by far was the 2nd, ''Aliens''... none of the others really gripped me like the first two films.
I hope the series (set on earth) can fire up my desire to see more smile

We will see, but Prometheus was so-so, and Covenant was ridiculous.

The first couple of movies worked because of the suspense of dealing with something unknown and dangerous, etc. Like with the Borg in Star Trek, once the "aliens" spend too much time on screen, once the audience becomes familiar with them, the stories lose their effectiveness.

I would not have great expectations for this.

Agree. In fact I believe Prometheus and Covenant did the ultimate damage to Alien - it literally took the alien out of Alien.

You make excellent points Nimits. In an attempt to prolong the Alien franchise, the writers delved into more and more unnecessary backstory and explanation/exposition and thus like you said, lowered much of the unknown and mystery.

When I look back on both Prometheus and Covenant, the only memorable and exceptional aspect I can think of is the character of "David" played so masterfully well by Michael Fassbender.

It wasn't so much that IMO, although I do agree with it. For me, it was taking the alien out of Alien. When Alien came out it was literally that, alien. The spaceship looked all asymetrical, "grown", like nothing ever made before, couldn't tell where the pilot ended and the spaceship began, nothing familiar. Then comes along Prometheus, meh it was big blue dudes all along. Even the original spaceship's pilot was just a cockpit for a big blue dude.

So, so stupid.

I agree with all of the criticisms of Prometheus and Covenant, with a possible difference being that I dislike them more than others here smile. Just such stupid characters, and they took away things that I think made the original more interesting with the back story.

I thought this was pretty good at roasting "Covenant"

I really love those "Honest Trailers" and the one for Covenant is brilliantly funny.

Two points:

1) In "Promethius," most of the characters were complete idiots. I'm not sure I've seen so much stupidity in an A-list title before. The saviors of humanity, the adventurers and discoverers of mankind, are bumbling fools? Color me shocked!

2) In "Covenant," when a "neutrino storm" disabled the ship, I completely rolled my eyes and a little voice inside of me whispered, "gee, this is going to be a total #%&*$#." Neutrinos interact with nearly nothing that we know of, yet... for some reason... they decimated a spacecraft designed to fly in... space? Right. Trillions upon trillions of neutrinos pass through the Earth every second. We're still here. We're fine.

Ridley Scott is no longer qualified to be associated with any Alien IP. Those are such glaring issues with the writing, I want no part in partaking in the franchise if they allow such nonsense to persist.

It's quite obvious and absurd how so many Hollywood writers do this in order to make the story interesting to mainstream audiences. They figure that if the crew members are too competent at their jobs and don't have any personality dysfunctions then the movie will just be too boring.

The Netflix series "Another Life" has the same exact problem.

Covenant: That insane robot just killed most of my crew, and then suggested I stick my head right up next to some scary looking alien pod . . . obviously he has my best interest at heart, so instead of shooting him, I should do the thing he says.

It is hard to find writing that bad.

When I watched Prometheus, I thought, "what a bunch of dumb characters - there's no where to go but up..."

Then Covenant came out and proved me wrong.

And who could forget the classic scene in "Prometheus" where Charlize Theron's character is somehow ONLY able to run in a perfectly straight line and thus ends up getting crushed by the crashing engineer ship?

Seems the series, if it happens, will be written by Noah Hawley? I just watched season 3 of Fargo, also written by Noah Hawley. Was a pretty good production.

He's a talented writer for sure but that doesn't mean he's necessarily the right person to make an adaptation based on the Alien universe. Obviously Fargo and Alien come from two very different genres.

Prometheus and Covenant are very nice looking fims, a pity that is all they are. My favourite part of either is Davids Lawrence of Arabia quotes. Found them amusing.

You pretty much echoed my feelings on both films. They look absolutely fantastic as far as the production design and cinematography go and Fassbender's performance as "David" was really great.

Everything else though from the plot holes to the completely illogical motives and behaviors of the crew members ruin both films.
