As I've mentioned before, the multi-plex movie theater as we know it is not going to go away in its entirety BUT there will most certainly be a significant reduction in the number of theaters. They will go through the same process that shopping malls have been going through for the past 10 years or so.

Most of the vacated spots left by closed theaters will most likely be replaced with restaurants. Malls need to have stores that give consumers an incentive to show up in person.

Every theater is not in the mall. Many are gigantic buildings. They have found new life as churches, college campuses, companies buildings, hospitals. In this pandemic, more restaurants and malls is not what you want. Who will go to it when there are lockdown orders.

I think the US, anyway, is reaching the end of the period where anyone pays attention to lockdown orders.

Many ain't happy with Warner Bros decision to release 17 movies plus Wonder Woman 1984 to cinema and HBO Max streaming together https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/n...aming-service-denounces-warner-bros-plan

I want to know how they will make a profit on some of those movies that are $200-300 million to make.

A lot of people are upset but i for one am pretty happy with this. They aren't going to recoup the money sitting on release dates or releasing it now when most movie theaters will be pretty empty. At least they are making an investment in HBO Max as a streaming platform.

The only downside is things getting more and more fragmented as people keep doing exclusives on their own streams. disney cbs hbo etc.,

Some of these movies that cost $250-350 million earn 700 million or 1 billion at the cinema. They can't earn that much streaming it. Sequels are made base on whether the prequels made money or not.

New poster that include HBO Max

And that is the thing. I am not paying for another streaming service. I will keep some sort of access to news, local weather, maybe sports (if the professional athletes ever get off their anti-American kick), but beyond that, I just as soon almost completely cut everything, and watch my BDB/BD collection, and stream the occasional movie off Amazon Prime once it is out of theaters (or equivalent). With a couple of exceptions, there are few movies I "need" to see right away. The lockdowns, the increasing political correctness in media, etc. have taught me that can live without most of what the current entertainment industry has to offer, and I do not really miss it.

+1

I find I enjoy re-watching series from the 90's more than most "woke" crap being produced today.

HBO has very deep pockets and undoubtedly they will be paying a premium license fee for those movies.

Keep in mind that when a studio releases a film to movie theaters, they split the proceeds from the ticket sales with the movie theater chains. The typical industry standard is about 55% going to the studio and 45% going to the movie theaters.

When a studio sells the licensing of a movie to a streaming service the studio gets 100% of that money. The "middle-man" has essentially been eliminated.

The great majority of the upset people are the ones who work for a movie theater chain. They need to wake up and smell the coffee.

It's annoying for the consumer but it was an inevitable evolution. Once the big studios saw just how utterly successful Netflix was they naturally wanted to capitalize on that and get a share of that pie.

And of course the exact same thing has happened with PC game digital distribution services.

It remains to be seen how the consumer will react to this.
I feel that the biggest tool companies have in fighting piracy is to make it easier to access the product legally. If you only have 1 or 2 streaming services, many people will sign up for both of them, leave it, and watch stuff. If there are 20, all with different shows, I suspect a lot of people will go back to pirating due to it being easier.

PC game distribution is a bit different, since you don't have to pay to access it, just pay to buy each game. So having 1 or 3 different services is annoying, but doesn't cost any more.

Edit: Plus, you have the case where some show or service is not available in your country. I know many people who would love to pay for the Mandalorian, but can't...

You make some valid points. In the case of Netflix and Amazon, a lot of their content is original anyway. Both are slowly going away from licensing shows and movies that are not theirs.
