Why is the F-35 the F-35? What happened to F-24 through F-34?

Why is the Hornet an "F/A"-18?

Why as an aircraft with zero air to air capability, the F-117, designated a fighter?

"While the A-10 possibly only escaped an F-designation by using its speed" is definitely the best line in the whole article!

Counter-Intell might be a possible explanation.
For example, SeAL Team 6 was so designated as to make the enemy think that Teams 3-5 existed, when they did not.

That was a nice little rabbit hole - thanks for posting it F4!!

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”
