I haven't purchased it myself yet because I'd have to build a new computer for it (as I did many times in the past).

Make no mistake - I want this thing, and at some point I will have it, but after firing up my FSX with addons for the first time in ages it's really not THAT far behind from what I can tell...

But then again I've never had 2020...

Thoughts?

FSX even with addons is like the stone age in comparison to MSFS 2020... (graphically speaking).
I certainly don't regret buying it either.

FSX with add-ons is maybe not far behind MSFS 2020, but only for specific areas (your add-ons). MSFS 2020 has a wide part of the World, at least, at the level of FSX with add-ons. There is some scenery glitch, especially with water elevation, and some remote places like Alaska are not at the level of the rest, probably due to the lack of satellites data.

MSFS 2020 is still at a beta stage, but I don't regret my buy. Another thought, don't buy it if you like airliners, it is clearly made for a GA experience right now.

No regrets. Imperfect scenery that reproduces the real Earth -- but visually nearly perfect (usually) at flight altitudes. That beats the competition to my eyes and preferences. More up to date flight models. Describing it as "beta stage" makes sense.

To play at 4K ultra settings requires a GPU with 10GB memory (they say). My 8GB memory does not come near cutting it (5fps). Going to 1440p (2K) ultra settings on a 4K monitor (full screen) gives around 40fps (quite good).

Thus, if one is building a new system and one may want 4K at some point, I suggest buying one of the new GPUs with 16GB (or more) memory. FWIW: Based on my experience and preferences, using a well selected, on sale under $300 4K desktop television works great for 4K gaming up to 60fps at ultra settings -- good contrast, nearly perfect color reproduction (measured using hardware for the purpose in my case) in a well chosen modern under $300 4K television set -- what I use.

Sapphire Pulse RX7900XTX, 3 monitors = 23P (1080p) + SAMSUNG 32" Odyssey Neo G7 1000R curve (4K/2160p) + 23P (1080p), AMD R9-7950X (ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 420), 64GB RAM@6.0GHz, Gigabyte X670E AORUS MASTER MB, (4x M.2 SSD + 2xSSD + 2xHD) = ~52TB storage, EVGA 1600W PSU, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full Tower, ASUS RT-AX89X 6000Mbps WiFi router, VKB Gladiator WW2 Stick, Pedals, G.Skill RGB KB, AORUS Thunder M7 Mouse, W11 Pro

ZamZow, I bought the Deluxo Version the other day when they had it on sale. And yet my poor little PC can't run it. So I am like you, I need a new PC (mine is approaching 8yrs old...)

No regerts here (look that up ;))

My PC is 10 years old. TEN years old. Well, OK my CPU, motherboard, power supply and case are ten years old. An i7 950 @ 2.8 gHz. I replaced my drives with SSDs, upgraded my memory from 12 to 24 gb (the maximum my mobo will accept) and treated myself to an nVidia 2070S graphics card, and I get pretty #%&*$# good performance wherever I go. But even with 12 gb RAM and a 970 graphics card, I was getting reasonable performance. So from that I can say that the most important single component is most probably the graphics card. Also, tailor your expectations, with my current setup I run everything high, except the clouds which are ultra. (I gots to have those ultra clouds).

I can't wait until the 3rd party stuff catches up, I'm a sucker for the older type gauge & prop aircraft like DC-3/C-47, C-130 etc.

edit:
Apparently the word that sounds exactly like dam is filtered out :/

No regrets, though I bought it for a very specific purpose: I wanted to 'fly' a bush plane from an airstrip near where I was born in Papua New Guinea, to the town where my brother was born, and see what the country around the highlands of New Guinea looks like in a near scale representation.

This sim is the closest I can get to that! I've had many hours now in the Savage Cub, Shock Ultra and Icon A5 amphib, all of which are a hoot to mess around in. Agree the BING maps rendering is best from 5,000 feet and above, but it has also been a hoot being able to land my Cub on the market square in the middle of the town I was born in! (And of course, the street in Denmark where I live now).

Am running msfs at high settings on an ASUS latpop with Nvidia 1650 4GB card at a modest 1920x1080.

No regrets here Either.
It runs like a champ and looks stunning on my rig which is a lot more than I can say for FSX when it was first released.

R7 3700X and 5600XT, any guesses as to how it would perform at 1080p?

Cool to hear, thanks for the comments. This is the first MSFS since 98 I haven't immediately jumped on (more due to financial strain on my part at this time rather than lack of enthusiasm). I do have a much stronger instinct of "Never Buy Version 1.0 of anything" these days though, I'd be lying if I didn't say that was also a bit of a factor (I could go out tomorrow and source a computer for it, just can't justify it at the moment)...

Interesting - is there anything with airliners in 2020 you'd say is inferior to FSX? I'm talking about stock planes, not addons...

My thought was about addons airliners, as many airliners virtual pilots have addons like PMDG.

If autopilot bugs are fixed, it is superior to stock FSX airliners.

Well, at least this time around I won't be a "beta tester" - although I can't recall any true disappointment upon purchase of previous versions (despite there being some bugs and fixes).

I'm really hoping they do VR support in the future - it seems the tech for that is finally starting to mature...

I flew the A320 "corrected" by a32nx project, it's fine.

Autopilot works, FMS mostly work (has some problems with sequencing sometimes). For a professional use it's still a bit limited, but as a game I was quite impressed by the fidelity of systems.

No regrets at all...

I wanted to wait a bit, and to be honest I wasent to sure because of all the money already spent in the FSX/P3D years, well at least up on till P3Dv4.5. Probably could have bought a new car with the money spent! biggrin Transitions from FSX to P3D, then from P3Dv2.5 to P3Dv3 etc all took a big reset of add-ons with the money to go along with them so as I said, I had my reserves as to dumping more money again but now I really don´t regret it what so ever. I bought the Deluxe edition a couple of days ago.

MSFS 2020 has brought back my interest to flight simming again which it´s nice to be airborne again!

I wish the default airframes (GA) would have analog cockpits, Iam more of a classic and while I don´t hate "glass cockpits" in GA, I rather have the six-pack configuration. The lack of study aircraft on the market for MSFS is a bummer but as someone already stated, the default airframes are alot better then those of the FSX/P3D days. Will just have to wait for now. A2A is already working on it and Iam sure PMDG is too.

Happy flights!

OK, I'll buck the trend. I have three regrets:
1.) No helicopters. With the near-real scenery (think FSX with addons but without having to activate them or wait for them to load if you have a lot, and with 3D trees and buildings...lots of them), a helo would be the perfect bird to take it all in.
2.) It's a BIG download and takes a LONG time, depending on your connection. I get 10Mb/s and it took me a about 33 hours. On the plus side, I'm running high graphics across the board and flying with internet scenery, real world weather and STILL getting 40+ fps for the most part (Los Angeles had me lower until the new area loaded).
3.) I need to find out how to bind my Logitech G940 profile to the game. Right now I have to set it to "Apply persistent profile", which means I have to change that back when I do something else.

But those regrets are minor when you consider how absolutely cool this is. I don't have VR, but I'm guessing that with it MSFS 2020 is what we all hoped flight simulators would be way back when.

One hint. Look up some "how to download" videos on You Tube. This is a little screwy.

Oh, I just thought of another regret. My mobile home out in the woods, five miles from a small town in rural Missouri is rendered in 3D, as is my pole barn. But my utility shed and above-ground pool aren't. I'll forgive them the omissions, though. Eventually. wink

Something big IMO for VFR flying is the rendering of churches. There's about a billion churches in the UK and they are primary VFR POI. Hopefully as part of this month's UK update something will be done about it, but I'm not that hopeful.

I wouldn't classify it as a regret, but there are a couple of things I'm a bit dissatisfied with.

First of all, I've noticed that some pretty important landmarks aren't represented. I flew over Paris and couldn't find Notre Dame. It was at night, but I've done the same in other flight sims and seen it, so I know where to look. It looked like generic buildings. Also, I flew from Rapid City to Mt. Rushmore and, to paraphrase Charlie Brown, all I found was a rock. Visitors' center, but no presidents. Maybe it was their day off, I don't know.

The other thing is lighting. Not sunlight, shadows or glare, but lighting at night. The Eiffel Tower? A great big black hole. All I could see was its silhouette against the street lights. The Vegas Strip looked like every casino forgot to pay the electric bill.

Don't get me wrong. I still think it's the best civil aviation flight sim yet. And I've heard said that it's only a beta. But things like this seem like stuff you'd want even in an alpha, because they're things that most people (I assume) are going to want to fly over.
