Actually there is some chronological overlap between the series but I don't think you miss anything by just finishing them in order.
I envy you watching it for the first time, in many ways I think it is the best SciFi series ever made.

Well now that The Expanse and His Dark Materials are done for the year, and since Travelers was cancelled it looks like I have plenty of time on my hands.
There’s a “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” movie that mentions the SG1 crew. Any idea if it matters where this is watched in SG1?

There were 2 straight to dvd movies made which I believe you are supposed to watch right after you finish the SG-1 series. "Ark of Truth" and "Continuum".

“The Shrine” was a very good Atlantis episode, David Hewlett really knocked it out of the park. It reminded me of this song.
I had to look it up to jog my memory but yes that was a good one, Hewlett always did a good job throughout the series.

I was trying to thinking of the name of the book (actually an excerpt in a grade school reading book) I’d read about the mentally-challenged school janitor “made smart” by an experimental treatment, who reverted after a time, since it reminded me of the episode. The Wikipedia page mentioned it, of course - “Flowers For Algernon.”

Flowers For Algernon is a great book, very tragic. As I remember it he was a baker's assistant or something.

Flowers For Algernon is a great book, very tragic. As I remember it he was a baker's assistant or something.
They made a movie out of it in 1968, changing things, I'm sure, but aside from a weird '60s montage in the middle, I think it's a pretty good film.
Robert Carlyle has been added to the list of actors I want to punch in the face until I can no longer make a fist, then switch to my other hand and keep going. Others include Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon) and the actor who played Conrad Ecklie on the original CSI. SGU is probably my least favorite of the series. Almost everyone is at least as inept as the so-called scientists in “Prometheus,” and I can’t understand how so many people can make it to adulthood without having attained even a kindergartener’s skills at cooperation.

SGU is definitely a different sort of Stargate from SG1 and SGA.
How far have you gotten into the series? I felt much as you do early on in the series but by the end I was wishing for more, and I still hold out hope that they will continue the SGU storyline somehow some day.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, SGU was very much a copy of Battlestar Galactica in style and tone. Carlyle's character was very much inspired by Gaius Baltar.

That was my first thought. Young = Bill Adama, Wray = Roslin, Rush = Baltar, Scott = Lee Adama, Greer = mix of Tighe & Tyrol. Telford would probably be Tom Zarek.

I’m on S2E18, I like the show despite the characters. But I guess not every cast can be like Firefly’s.

I liked it, a lot. A lot of the characters were likable and the actors made you care about what happened to them. When
Dr. (Major) Fraiser was killed it was a punch in the stomach like when Wash was killed in Serenity.
Even the annoying or obnoxious ones were given redeeming qualities that made you rethink your opinions of them.
Where would I rate it? Pretty high on my list. I liked Babylon 5 better, and The Expanse as well. I’d say it’s a step above BSG, mainly because the writing was better. It’s in my top 5, definitely.
