Any fans of the Criterion Collection Blu-rays and DVDs? Barnes and nobles is having a 50% sale at the moment.

Criterion is renowned for their high-quality transfers and loads of extra supplements.

Thanks for the heads up Patrocles. I absolutely love the quality from Criterion. My current Criterion collection consists of several Akira Kurosawa films and a few from Sergei Eisenstein.

Some good deals, unfortunately, most of it says out of stock. Luckily for me, Barry Lyndon isn't.

I totally forgot that I have the Criterion "Barry Lyndon" and that one is my most recent Criterion purchase. It's the only Kubrick film I have from Criterion.

Well done, you.

I ended up grabbing the Lone Wolf and Cub series and The Grand Budapest Hotel to fill out my Wes Anderson collection. I wanted La Dolce Vita but it is out of stock but says it is available at the local shop (not so local so I will not go there for one item)

I absolutely love “Grand Budapest Hotel”. By far it’s my favorite Wes Anderson film.

Yes, he is quite the unique director. I forgot that I also grabbed The Fantastic Mr. Fox on this purchase.

Anyone running with a 4K TV? I wonder how well BR scales up if I ever get a 4K TV.

I've watched them many years ago but don't remember details, except for the beautiful Juliette Binoche. If you're a fan of French cinema it's worth watching. If you don't know, French films tend to be very realistic and emotional, but also bleak and ugly and rarely end well. In fact, some end with no resolution whatsoever. I find this very unsatisfying.

However, Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring are must-watch companion films and together make a masterpiece.

I have lots of German, Russian and Japanese films on bluray/dvd but nothing French. I'm actually hard-pressed trying to remember what was the last French-language film I saw. I remember back in the 90's I rented a French film from Blockbuster because ostensibly it was about the Franco-Prussian War but it was not. It was essentially a love story that just happened to be set during the war. I got bored quickly once the single (exactly ONE) combat scene was over.

"The Crimson Rivers" with Jean Reno would be a solid French candidate for a movie collection, but it's also already 20 years old wink

LOL! I completely forgot about that gem! Probably worth another watch.

I'd also recommend this one. Bizarre and totally entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZeWp1D8MlU
