Godfall Quick Update - 2.0.95

This quick update, 2.0.95 is just for PC and enables the ability for players to play Godfall with ray tracing on while using applicable AMD GPUs. Note: players will need to have the latest AMD GPU drivers to enable this. Ray tracing using NVIDIA GPUs will come with a future update.

AMD uses DX12 ray tracing open standard (not a proprietary standard -- like Nvidia's). Interesting that AMD gets Ray Tracing on Godfall before Nvidia.

AMD is also soon to provide DX12 open standard version of image enhancement that competes with Nvidia DLSS2 (it is said). Nvidia is, of course, free to implement the "open standard".

Some think that "in the long run", the DX12 "open standard" ray tracing and image sharpening will become the go to methods and Nvidia RTX and DLSS will lose favor with developers (thus, Nvidia will offer the "open standard" methods). We'll see.

Thing is, looking at the Godfall picture (half w/o ray tracing and half with ray tracing) its hard to see that ray tracing truly adds much to an ordinary scene. I've noticed "ray tracing like" effects in Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Witcher 3 (not real ray tracing) -- real ray tracing would not add much to those games in my opinion. Unfortunately, I failed in getting an RX6800XT ordered. So it will be a while before I can see for myself in a real on-my-screen game.

Regarding competition:

NVIDIA: it may take a few more months for GeForce RTX 30 supply to catch up with demand

NVIDIA now expects that the shortage of RTX 30 graphics cards may persist past the holiday season. In fact, it may persist in the first quarter of next year.

A few weeks before the RTX30 series released, a "leaker" sad that this delay into next year would happen. The reason given was that too many 8nm chips were flawed -- thus, the cost per usable chip was high. Therefore, after an initial release, Nvidia was going to hold back production until the manufacturing process was producing 8nm chips economically. Back at the time of the leak, they were saying it would be 2021 before full 8nm production would be underway. That leak may have been accurate -- given how things are going.

Meantime, there have been no similar "leaks" regarding AMD 7nm chip defects. But, I won't be surprised if "Big Navi" cards are also in short supply until next year.

The important fact is that: Now high end AMD GPUs are competitive with high end Nvidia GPUs. A few years back, AMD said they could not compete at CPUs and GPUs simultaneously. So, back then, they chose CPU competition with Intel. It took 3 generations to win that one -- even AMD was surprised they actually came out ahead of Intel. Now, the "Big Navi" GPU is the first serious attempt to compete with Nvidia GPUs at the high end. Not a bad first attempt. We'll see how that competition "shakes out" over the next few years.

Everyone knows that effective competition means faster product improvement and lower prices for us -- regardless of which brand we prefer. Competition is good smile

EVGA launches GeForce RTX 3090 KINGPIN HYBRID at 2,000 USD

This graphics card is definitely not for casual gamers, in fact, it is not even for typical gamers. The Kingpin series were always after extreme overclocking. Hence the card features a massive 23 phase power stage design with 12 layer PCB. It comes with three BIOS settings (normal, OC, and LN2), in case you need to remove the cooler and try LN2 pot instead.

AMD Helping to Bring Smart Access Memory to Nvidia GPUs

Smart Access Memory will work on Intel, AMD combos too.

AMD stated in an interview with PCWorld that its Radeon group is working with Intel to get this feature supported with RX 6000-series GPUs and Intel's latest CPUs and motherboards. The same goes with AMD's Ryzen group, which is working with Nvidia to get Smart Access Memory working with GeForce GPUs.

As previously mentioned, AMD supports "open standards" vs. "proprietary".

Regarding future competition: SemiAccurate usually (not always) gets things right (or very close). So, their analysis is worth considering.

Intel delays a mainstream server platform once again

Analysis: Intel is no longer competitive in servers, no caveats

Intel just significantly delayed another mainstream server project, this is getting painful to watch. SemiAccurate now thinks Intel is no longer a viable player in the server market, it is that bad.

You might recall that SemiAccurate was the first to break the news of Cooper Lake’s knifing, delaying their entire server line by a generation, broke news about Ice Lake-SP not being a 2020 product like Intel promised, and many more. Why are we recounting history? Because Intel publicly denied every single one of these things when we said it even after many of them were in memos and emails to customers. We fully expect Intel to deny this one because it is going to be painful, and try to keep the pretense of things being on schedule, no delays, and all the rest. Don’t believe it

SemiAccurate again. This time a more minor AMD delay.

AMD stays trendy and delays Milan a bit

Can’t let Intel have all the fun

We will start this one out by giving you the conclusion, this time it isn’t a big deal but it is real.

Regarding future competition: Another article suggesting that Intel has not yet turned things around.

Quote
Apple’s move to dump Intel saved it $2.5 billion

The $2.5 billion figure was determined by Sumit Gupta, IBM's AI strategy lead, who calculated Apple's M1 production should cost in the range of $40 to $50 per chip against the cost of procuring Intel Core i5 processors at around $175 to $250 a chip.

While it might have been cost that made Apple dump Intel, it is more likely is that Apple wanted to free itself from the constraints of Intel product delays and a slowing roadmap of [Intel] advancement.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Review: The Mainstream Knockout

AMD's $300 Ryzen 5 5600X delivers a .. stunning blow to Intel's mid-range lineup and slots in as the mainstream chip for gaming – It even beats Intel's $488 halo Core i9-10900K in 1080p gaming.

Ryzen 5 5600X is the most power-efficient desktop PC chip we've ever tested.

Luckily for entry-level buyers, the 65W Ryzen 5 5600X is the only Ryzen model that comes with a bundled cooler, and it's adequate for most users.

AMD Precision Boost Overdrive 2: Adaptive Undervolting For Ryzen 5000 Coming Soon

One of the ways that enthusiasts tinker with their processors is through overclocking: the attempt to get more performance by changing frequencies and voltages, up to the limits of the system. Another way is through undervolting – removing voltage from the processor to help lower temperatures and offer higher thermal headroom (or lower power consumption). It all depends on the silicon, and if it can support it: AMD (and Intel) have to set hard limits for production to enable sufficient yield and costs, but users on certain products can always poke the hardware to try and get something more. With this in mind, AMD is improving its range of overclocking tools to allow for adaptive undervolting of Ryzen 5000 processors.

AMD’s new Curve Optimization tool, to come with AGESA 1180 on 400-series and 500-series motherboard BIOS updates, is designed for this single-user voltage tracking scenario. The goal of the Curve Optimization tool is to opportunistically reduce voltage where possible during low load and high load scenarios, but rather than simply apply a fixed voltage offset across the whole range, it will use other internal sensors (such as workload, temperature, socket limits) to adapt the voltage as required. With AMD’s tool, it should do this on the order of one millisecond, i.e. 1000 times a second.

This tool is for those who try to get the absolute most out of their CPU. The boost will not be large -- it will not affect 2K and 4K gaming significantly.

Far Cry 6 to Feature Ray Tracing, Variable Rate Shading, and FidelityFX CAS

[Ubisoft and AMD] joined forces to bring FidelityFX CAS, DXR Ray Tracing, and Variable Rate Shading to Far Cry 6.

We've worked together to ensure smooth 4K visuals experience.

The sixth main entry in the Far Cry franchise has been listed last week for a May 26th, 2021 release, though Ubisoft did not confirm that in an official capacity yet.

On a personal note: Having failed to get an RX 6800XT on the first day, I'll probably wait until I need one. I got Far Cry 6 for free with my R7 5800X. Witcher 3 is being updated with Ray Tracing, etc (a few months?}. I may not actually need an RX 6800XT until one of them is released.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 Custom Series Review Roundup

Today we are looking at custom cards that are officially launching today. Please note that most reviewers did not have much time for their reviews, others have not even received the final pricing at launch, so their recommendations may be missing.

This is complete nonsense......'Smart Access' is just AMD's name for resizeable BAR (Base Address Register). It's part of the PCIe specification.

Another rumor.

Quote
NVIDIA Allegedly Sold $175 Million Worth of Ampere GeForce RTX 30 GPUs To Crypto Miners, Could Be A Contributing Factor Behind Immense Shortages

According to Financial Analysts at RBC Captial Markets and Barrons, it is estimated that NVIDIA has sold at least $175 Million worth of GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards utilizing its Ampere GPUs directly to miners.

$175 Million however is no small figure and that would mean a large chunk of GeForce RTX 30 GPU series which were dedicated for gaming purposes were sold out to miners. The demand from the mining community is on the rise as Bitcoin.com suggests that Ethereum V2.0 is just around the corner and as such demand for more efficient hardware has increased.

Who knows? In a free market society, Nvidia can do what makes sense to Nvidia. If true, AMD might do the same.

Personal Note: I just pre-ordered Cyberpunk 2077. I was sold by the reviews of some who have played many hours (its not just a twitch shooter, its a genuine in-depth RPG, they report). Now, I may be able to make full use of a 6800XT (or better) sooner than I thought. We'll see.

Two conflicting views:

1. No more AMD 6800 series Reference cards will be made (according to some retailers). One will have to buy a more expensive Custom card.

2. AMD 6800 series Reference cards will be made into the first quarter of 2021 (according to an AMD statement).

Personally, I prefer a 6800XT Reference card at the baseline initial release price (as I usually do). I also know that Reference cards are often discontinued after a while.

There is also a rumor that the 6900XT will only be made in the Reference model -- no custom cards are planned according to some rumors. We'll see how this develops.

Faster Than Threadripper: How I Overclocked Ryzen 9 5950X to 6 GHz and a World Record

With LN2, AMD's new flagship chip can hit 6.05 GHz on all 16 cores.

I would go as far as to say the marketing hype and multi-day-info-trickle that was the release actually undersold how good these processors are.

Let’s be clear, if any part I own degrades or gets hurt in any way I am gutted for days about it. This is not a “bench on LN2 then throw away” type of deal. I grind the same CPU over and over and over.

Of course, this is "for interest only" as most of us will not be using our CPUs this way.

Regarding AMD's future sales some estimates say:

Quote
48% of global gamers are PC gamers, that's 1.5 billion PC gamers

That's 1,500,000,000 PC gamers. If one tenth of one percent (1 in 1000) of them want new graphics card from the new batch, that's 1.5 million graphics cards.

However, if gaming PCs are updated as infrequently as only once every 5 to 10 years, that means 150 million to 300 million GPUs and APUs (of all types, not just high end) will be sold this year.

Those kinds of sales numbers will be good for AMD's, Intel"s, and Nvidia's futures -- but tough for those of us trying to get a new generation GPU real soon.

AMD expects AIBs to sell Radeon RX 6800 series at MSRP in 4 to 8 weeks

short and unofficial statement from AMD .. paraphrased

“We have had a private conversation with AMD. They assured us that in 4 to 8 weeks there will be AIB cards available at MSRP. They said they enabled the AIBs to achieve the 649 dollars [RX 6800 XT] MSRP and they expect that to happen within 8 weeks.”

I'll wait.

ASUS Enables Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory) Support on Intel Z490, H470 & B460 Motherboards Through Latest BIOS Update

ASUS is the first manufacturer to enabled Resizable BAR support or AMD Smart Access Memory technology on the Intel platform. The technology allows the motherboard makers to utilize both Intel 10th Gen Core CPUs and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards to deliver higher GPU performance in games and applications.

This information has been confirmed by an ASUS representative who says that Beta BIOS is already available for ASUS Z490, H470 and B460 motherboard owners. The support rolls out ahead of official support from NVIDIA for their latest Ampere GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards. Meanwhile, AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs should already able to take the advantage of the new feature

Custom AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards are coming

AMD board partners will be allowed to make custom designs based on Navi 21 XTX GPU. The story claims that due to the limited time that was given to AIBs, the first designs should be expected no sooner than early 2021.

AMD is set to launch its Radeon RX 6900 XT reference SKU on December 8th. The graphics card features 80 Compute Units with 5120 Stream Processors enabled. This is the full-fat variant of the Big Navi that is officially targeting NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 in AMD’s own benchmark comparison. The graphics card will officially retail at 999 USD, which is 1/3 cheaper than RTX 3090. It is currently unclear how many cards will be available for sale at launch, but one would guess it won’t be overwhelming.
