RIP, 2 memebers of the crew that went down with the Fitz were neighbors to my cousins in Silver Bay,MN. We got a call that night from them telling us what happened. My father was sick about it. He was a former crewman on the lake freighters. He knew what it was like to feel the ship twist in those waves. He gave it up after after a storm sunk the Bradley and a good friend of his went down with it.
I heard a story on this ship tragedy on NPR a few years ago! I bought some porter that day from a Cleveland, Ohio brewery to salute the memory (I knew of the porter but not the story until the NPR show). The famous song from the 1970's is quite good. IMHO, YMMV
