Are the 4-way hats on an old gameport CH stick the same physical part as the 4-way hats on a USB CH stick?

Thanks.

Physically they are identical, have 4 buttons (4 tactile micro-switches).

Typically HAT's in joysticks* are physically 4 buttons - not counting the press button in some HAT.

In "8 way" POV HAT the diagonals (NE, NS, SW, NW) of "8 ways" is created by drivers when 2 near buttons, e.g. N+ E, is pressed simultaneous,
why 8 ways HAT's was never much practical, being a hit and miss.

But in CH gameport gear the HAT's have a physical limitation in plastic guide for avoid press two near buttons (e.g. N+E) simultaneous, due the limitations of gameport drivers.

But is easy modify this "Gameport era" HAT for for work as 8 way if want, and use as POV HAT (8 way) with a modern USB controller, like BU0836A, the modification is explained in this old page (that soon became "extinct") :

http://snomhf.exofire.net/8-WayHat.html

* Exception is VirPil and VKB joysticks, these use ALPS 8 way (8 physical buttons) + press button switches in their joysticks, but these require specific support in firmware.
Due this can't install an ALPS 8 way switch for replace a 8 way HAT (that physically is 4 buttons) in common joysticks.

The reason I originally asked the question was that I was considering buying a used stick to harvest switches from, I see them go for $50 or so on eBay regularly. With new 4-way switches costing $30 or more each a $50 stick with 3-4 4-way's is a bargain.

http://snomhf.exofire.net/ works.
thanks Sokol1.

yes, buying a used stick is an option.
however, a few years ago, I bought some 4-way hat switches for converting my CH Combatstick to Fighterstick at a website that sell joystick parts.
sadly, I can not find the site now.

Sokol1, do you remember the site?
Iirc, he advertised his site as replacement parts for Thrustmaster joystick.
but I can used his 4-way switch for my CH Combatstick with no problem at all.

Today is easy 3D print 4/5 way (joystick) "HAT's":

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3452944

Inside are just four or five 11x11 mm tactile micro switches (e.g. OMRON B3F series).
