Just read a superb novel Infact I read the whole thing in a day!

Hurrah for the next one to die by Samuel Winter.

"Julian Canning is a useless pilot and a disastrous soldier. He is therefore thoroughly unhappy about finding himself in the Royal Flying Corps and having to fly the ridiculously out of date BE2 observation aircraft.April 1917 once again sees a crew of old men cheerfully seeking to bury a generation in the fields of France. The RFC throw large numbers of men and machines into supporting the Arras offensive regardless of the cost. The month will ultimately become known as ‘Bloody April.’Strapped daily into an under powered box kite, Canning maintains a state of perpetual foul-mouthed inebriation as he navigates brothels and battlefields with equal ineptitude, all the while desperately trying to avoid becoming another trophy on the Red Baron’s wall."

I love the fact it followed a Be2 pilot over first two weeks or so of Bloody April. Makes a change from novels about scouts. As you can imagine it's not riddled with laughs but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also like the fact in the Afterward section the Author explains how his main character which shows the author has done his research. I hate badly researched novels.

Anyway I can't recommend it enough

Enjoyed the book very much. Recommended, though the author does overlay the story with a few modern sensibilities, something he alludes to in his postscript. Reminded me of Goshawk Squadron, the first book by Derek Robinson:

For an accurate depiction of the life of a WW1 bomber pilot 'Don't Let Them Bag The Nines' written from the wartime diary of Frederick Williams who flew DH4s is good:

Thanks for the recommendation Wodin.

Glad you enjoyed it. I agree I too liked the authors explanation about why he wrote in a certain way at times.

I think Derek Robinson's classic trilogy has far more dark humour than this read. Those three books are hard to beat.

Also The Old Lie by Alex Revell is a superb novel by someone who really knows his history. His book High in the empty blue is an amazing read about 56 squadron, that book s highly rated so it's no surprise his novel is great aswell.
