It looks like they now have a big crappy ship too:

I wonder if they had to make a new video online navigation course for it. rolleyes

In a weapons test years in the making, the Navy's stealthy new USS Zumwalt destroyer successfully pulled off the first live-fire test of its unique vertical launch system with a Standard Missile (SM-2).

While the Zumwalt was commissioned back in 2016, news of the test comes months after the Navy finally accepted delivery of the warship with a functioning combat system back in April and the first live-firing of the ship's 30mm Mark 46 Mod 2 Gun Weapon System the following May.

But with the vessel long plagued by cost overruns and technical issues in the intervening years, the cost of the LRLAP skyrocketed from $50,000 to $566,000 apiece, prompting the Navy to not just reduce its Zumwalt-class destroyer buy from 28 hulls to just three but transitioned the Zumwalt itself from shore bombardment to anti-ship surface warfare missions.

As a result, the Zumwalt now comes laden with ship-killer systems like the Maritime Strike Tomahawk and SM-6, Defense News notes. The $505 million Advanced Gun System now stands "all but abandoned" by the Navy after being delivered to the service in an "inactive state" and only expected to reach initial operational capacity in September 2021.

The latest evaluation of the Zumwalt's self-defense systems conducted by the Pentagon's operational testing and evaluation arm in fiscal year 2019 revealed "severe problems" during the vessel's Self-Defense Test Ship events that will "adversely affect the operational effectiveness of the combat system if not corrected."

Those self-defense systems include the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 1 short-range missile interceptor, the Cooperative Engagement Capability ship-to-ship communications interface, and the new Multi-Function Radar (MFR/SPY-3) that's been giving the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier a headache for years.

"The Navy has put the test program on hold and is currently working to identify the root cause of these problems," the OT&E report reads. "The DDG 1000 self-defense test program is at risk of being inadequate if the six remaining SDTS events are not completed."

I'll save em the trouble and identify the root cause of the problems for them...

Systemic Incompetence

Seriously, from the top down.

I really try to look at these military hardware procurement/development issues as objectively as possible and what I mean by that specifically is that we are dealing with extremely advanced and complex weapons systems that will invariably have many teething problems and kinks to work out. Having said that, there's no doubt that there is just way too much political machination behind the scenes that often leads to inefficiencies and poor judgement. A solution is easier said than done though.

I sometimes wonder if that guy ever actually sleeps. Or if he does sleep, he just has a cot in his office that he uses.

Elon Musk is a mutant.

Say you decided you wanted to "merely" start up a grocery chain, and take it nation-wide. Doing that alone would be a pretty massive achievement. Yet that's pretty much nothing compared to what Musk has pulled off...

Littoral Combat Ship USS Detroit To...Power While Already En Route for Repairs

Littoral Combat Ship USS Detroit (LCS-7) was towed into a Florida port after losing power on its way to port for repairs, after suffering a previous engineering casualty that took it out of an international exercise, Navy officials confirmed to USNI News on Friday.

The Freedom-class LCS was bound for its homeport at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., when the ship lost power.

“USS Detroit (LCS-7) experienced an engineering casualty. After a thorough technical evaluation, it was determined that repairs would need to be made in port,” Cmdr. Ashley Hockycko.
“During the ship’s return transit to her homeport of Mayport, Fla., the ship lost electrical power. The ship is currently being towed to Port Canaveral by M/V Gary Chouest. Due to deteriorating weather in the area, the ship was towed to Port Canaveral, Fla., the closest port, out of an abundance of caution and for the safety and comfort of the crew.”

Ship spotters observed Detroit entering the port under tow early Friday afternoon. The East Coast of Florida is in the path of the remnants of Hurricane Eta, which is expected to cause high winds in the area.

Detroit and USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) were slated to participate in the UNITAS exercise off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific, two Navy officials confirmed to USNI News this week.

A message left with U.S. 4th Fleet on the status of the exercise was not immediately returned.

Late last month, Detroit suffered another casualty to its combining gear that links its diesel engines to its gas turbine engines, forcing it to return to port, reported Defense News.

Now that's an appropriate name for a neutered ship (no offense to her being shot while doing her job, it's just a gun control proponent's name for a warship?). Why in the world are they still building these trash boats? So many incidents of them just being unable to get anywhere under their own power. A disgrace to the US Navy imo.

These are new/brand new gazillion dollar vessels. Wiki says these LEMONS are costing some $450 MILLION each. Geez what a bargain. rolleyes

Port Canaveral...first place I ever surfed next to a jetty, like 1967 I think. The M/V Gary Chouest was built right up the bayou from me, when I lived and worked in LA, 1997 to 2013, in LaRose, LA. It's first Captain was a really cool gentleman named Ace. Somehow, I was lucky enough to call Ace my friend, long story. He was THE lead Captain for Edison Chouest Offshore, he pretty much was the man to test sail the first of every big AHT (Anchor Handling Tugs). These were 50 Million + Dollar boats in the 90's...so no telling now.

So, the M/V Gary Chouest was designed and built as an anchor handling tug (for big drilling rigs). Yeah, it can do the tugboat thing, it has huge winches and LOTS of power. Chouest has always had lots of Navy tug contracts. Are they actually paying LOTS per day to have boats like the Gary C shadow those freakin garbage scows called the LCS???

Oh, here's the Gary in Port Fourchon, LA. some years ago. Those BIG winches can do some serious pulling.

Thanks F4U, lots of good memories about S. LA and the gulf that help offset the sick feeling in my stomach caused by the many slimeballs with stars on their shoulders who are telling us the LCS is great.
