It sure doesn't seem like it's been that long... coming from the great Combatsim exodus and looking for a place to find like minded Steel Beasts and Falcon 4 players, SimHQ became my new home. Although I don't get to fly flight sims as much as I used to, I met some good online friends here and truly believe this is one of the best online communities out there. Here's to friends we lost, friends we haven't met yet, and my current crew of fellow Mechwarrior pilots with whom I still play. Thank you SimHQ.

Yup. I've never seen an in-depth demographic breakdown of the SimHQ community but my educated guess after being on this site for almost 20 years is that the average age here is probably in the 45-50 range.

Here's something amazing to me...

The very sim that got me started here on SimHQ almost 17 years ago is apparently still being milked! eek2

Thanks to you all for making this site what it is.

I loved F-18 Korea and flying around Hawaii.

My first post back in 2008 was about Steel Beasts Pro. That has improved no end since then and I guess is still being improved. (I donated my copy to a fellow SimHQ'er some years ago).

Thinking back, I had my bets on SF:P1 as being the savior of flight sims for the masses. I figured that once TK added more features like modern sensors and stealth (more than a simplified RCS), as well as more detail to his dynamic campaign engine (while providing tools to create, manage and expand DC capability...think Strategic Command for EF2000), his sim would eventually become the 'bomb'!

Add mission video playback (i.e. Hornet Korea, Jane's USAF) and an external AWACS module to oversee and manage the campaign (i.e. TAW, Falcon 4), all in a DRM-free lite survey sim, and you have the ultimate Jane's Fighter Anthology/USAF replacement!

But chasing graphics and dropping MP did it in, I think. Falcon over the years has always had relatively dated graphics and assuming old-school MP capabilities (unless BMS revamped the MP code) and yet it continues to thrive. Maybe gameplay really does matter?

Keep in mind that the Strike Fighters series was made by a "studio" which was literally ONE guy with an occasional second guy who TK hired from time to time to make textures for the planes and scenery. IMHO, Strike Fighters fell between the cracks because it was much too "arcadey" for the hardcore flight simmers and it was "too complex" for the casual gamers. I also have to say that the immersion for the Strike Fighter games outside of the cockpit was pretty dull and lifeless.

Time does fly. We didn't get our first computer until the summer of 2003, a little later than most I believe. (we had 56K dialup for 5 years, that's all that was available.).
The original IL-2 Sturmovik led me to this site. SimHQ has been a constant destination ever since. We live in a rural area and our internet speed is 14mbps down/3.5 up, we pay 194$ a month Cnd, an insane amount, but the only real option that suits our family. Its wireless or satellite, and satellite is crap for gaming. My son is a much bigger gamer than I.
The speed we get is not good enough for ARMA3 coop, which is disappointing.

But enough about me, Happy 20th Clydewinder ! Here's to another 20. cheers
