I can absolutely see why “Master & Commander” would be considered to be “too slow” for the great majority of the mainstream audience. It’s no conincidence that the Pirates of the Caribbean films had mass appeal.
Having said that, I think most of us here on SimHQ have movie preferences that are not in line with the mainstream.

Just finished binge-watching the Netflix series "Travelers". Set in the current century, it's about a group of time travelers sent back to the 21st century from the future to prevent a future apocalypse. The gimmick is that they don't come back as their original physical beings, but they simply take over the body and mind of someone in the present who is about to die by some natural event like a car accident or a fall from a great height. They take over the body in time to prevent its destruction, but not the loss of the person who was going to die anyway. In this way, their arrival has less effect on the present timeline. Although the "travelers" have some knowledge beforehand of the person they will become they still have to adapt and improvise to assume their new identities while at the same time attempt to carry out their missions. Their missions come from an all-knowing supercomputer in the future referred to as the "director"
The series follows a five-person team of these travelers through 3 complete seasons. The leader of the team comes back as a 10 year veteran in the FBI who also has a wife of even longer who he also has to deceive. The oldest member of the team comes back as a high school senior. The team historian comes back in the body of a heroin addict.
While those elements almost make it sound like a comedy, it's anything but, and all of these situations add to the complexity of the team's various missions. Although the final season has a definite ending, it's left sort of open where a new series could start with a completely new team.
There are just enough twists and turns to the plots to keep them suspenseful and highly addictive. The lead role (FBI agent) is played by Eric McCormack who is the same actor who played, and again now plays, Will on the revived sitcom--Will & Grace (his commitment to the renewed sitcom possibly contributed to the Netflix series ending with season 3) However, it seems tos prove that he is equally adept at drama or comedy.
Anyway, it has kept me busy for over a week now.
Cheers

I saw two movies this weekend: 1) "My Soul to Take" - Pretty good Wes Craven slasher. Had he gone full H.P. Lovecraft in the ending, it could have even been better. 3 stars out of 4. 2) "Swallow." This was a good movie and a very empathetic portrayal of a woman with issues who was unloved for herself and instead objectified by those around us as a "thing." Started out great, and was really good throughout until the ending... I didn't expect this to be a movie about abortion.
Unfortunately, the ending lost point, and like most movies about abortion and the right to choose, neglected to provide adoption as an option and a viable choice. The true tragedy of this film was the baby inside her, who never had a chance to decide itself if it wanted to live. The woman, a product of rape, who's mother let her live, never would have had the opportunity to make her choice had her mother aborted her, and if that is the message--that folks are better off being aborted then having a chance at life, then this is sad.
To writers out there--you are being disingenuous with your audience if you do not explore all facets of an issue, and simply choose one outcome as the right, feel good outcome. Had the character been faced with the choice of abortion or adoption by counselors in the clinic(as they should), and then given the opportunity to choose, then perhaps the audience would have more to ponder on this issue when the credits roll. Life is precious. There are many amazing couples out there who want to have children themselves but cannot, and beg and plead for the opportunity to raise a child of another as their own. They would give them a great home and an amazing place to live, and the care and love they deserve, given the chance. Summary: Good movie but the ending deducted points... 2.5 stars out of 4, because I deducted an entire star.

At the time that this operation was conducted the British Army had just recently introduced the SA80 rifle, in light of what the found during Dessert Storm the rifle needed a good bit of re-design to prevent stoppages and correct it's accuracy. The SAS were allowed to use other weapons to suit what ever the operation needed. Boy it's a long time since I read the books about Bravo Two Zero by "Andy McNab" and The One that got away by "Chris Ryan" though both books have been heavily criticized as being fiction by other troop members. Chris Ryan has made a few TV series like Strike Back and Ultimate Farce Force

What was in the box? They keep talking about it but they don't show it. It's like that movie with all the hassle over a briefcase and its inside was never shown. You mean Pulp Fiction. Genius filmmaking. The point is, not knowing what was in it makes it a talking point. It can be interpreted differently. Some say it was gold, some say it was Wallace's soul.
