A Tall Boy or a Grand Slam used as a gate marker at a RAF base was found to be still active a few years ago. That RAF had another 12,000lb bomb, T-12 Cloudmaker 44,000 lb bomb, developed by USA for use by the B-36 bomber, but war ended before it could be used
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

This may refer to an incident at RAF Chilmark, Wiltshire, in the early Nineties. Chilmark (long since closed) held the RAF’s strategic reserve of conventional bombs, underground in a network of disused mining tunnels burrowed into a hillside. A friend of mine was station commander there, he told me the story of the “empty” Grand Slam that sat outside Station Headquarters (ie his office) as a Gate Guard. Seems that some planned work in front of SHQ required the temporary removal of the bomb. So they did their research, found that the empty weight of Grand Slam was 5.5 tons, and brought round the Station’s 6-ton crane to do the job. Chugga-chugga-chugga-Clunk. Bomb does not move, up come the back wheels of the crane. Oh dear they said. Let’s just check the bomb’s records, to confirm that it was deactivated? Oh dear (squared), the paperwork can’t be found.. Next steps. Evacuate base, call in EOD squad from RAF Wittering. The Wittering team arrive, set up a heavily protected control point 100 yds from the Grand Slam, and send forward their remote control “wheelbarrow” bomb disposal robot to gingerly drill a test hole to discover the condition of the bomb’s contents. Out comes a stream of some 4 tons of rusty brown rainwater.

Viewing the detonation on the Beeb News site. I don't really know, but it didn't look like the magnitude of bang one would expect from such a bomb, even under water. Perhaps it was smothered or encased in some way before accidental explosion? Though the bomb had a strong casing to penetrate casemates, so perhaps it was buried deep in the base of the lake. Compared to a much smaller sea-mine: BANG!

Apparently the locals went out in fishing boats afterwards and scooped up the dead fish which they used to feed the homeless,so they didn't die in vain.

How would you like your fish, fried, broiled or blown up?

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet. I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

How would you like your fish, fried, broiled or blown up? As to my query from a chap in the locality on another forum I frequent: "The sappers prepared for this action for a year. The bomb rested at a depth of 12 meters. Very strange is that it didn't originally explode - it had three fuse systems and all of them fail very strange. The bomb was to be neutralized by the controlled firing of the explosive after penetrating the bomb. Unfortunately - firing quickly turned into an explosion. The sappers took this eventuality into account and the entire operation was carried out remotely. Noone hurt. Well, maybe except for the fish in the river. Personally, I think that for such a huge bomb - the explosion was not big. It is possible that some of the explosive did burn before the explosion." It was thought the yield was one third of the norm, probably due to deterioration ...thank goodness.

I would have thought it would bury itself much deeper that it was.
