I agree with Crane, some young blood would be good. NFB has livened up the place, as has the reaction to some of his posts by some of the curmudgeonly old codgers on here. A few more youngsters to come in, upset the apple cart and then begin to age gracefully would be good. smile

If you got to retire at 65 you’re one of the luckier ones! wink

It was a joke. (pretending to be grumpy old man).
BTW, where did all the old members go ? Did they migrate somewhere else ? I can't see so many people losing interest if flight sims.
Or did something happen that is just not discussed ?
Perhaps social media took a big bite out of the site.

It was mostly due to 2 major factors.

1. People in general have shifted to social media and aggregate websites like Reddit.

2. There was a significant exodus of members when SimHQ changed ownership a couple of years ago.

Did the previous owner go to a new site ?
Loyalty to a site owner seems odd, unless they were followed somewhere.
I guess reddit does have many game specific boards. But man, it can be a cesspool.

If Microsoft would enter the Combat Flight Simulation genre once again, I think that would would really bring the focus to the mainstream.
I know their Combat Sims are far from the best or most popular, but I really think it could start a sort of revival.

My grandson has had a go on DCS, he did like to fly the Hawk and the P51 but I don't have enough time to corrupt I mean let him play on the PC, he is very keen on aircraft while his dad want's him to play football. He is now old enough (10) and smart enough that he could pick it up, but with the restrictions to movement here he won't be visiting us for the foreseeable future.

Something a lot simpler than DCS would be better to get him into it

War Thunder or World of Warplanes are relatively easy to get into, while still having as much depth as most of the sims we cut our teeth on.

This is probably where the younger generations are actually.

I'm still on SimHQ *because* of the older demographics! Most posters I can relate to, or at least can learn from the older and wiser.

SimHQ is my virtual refuge and only internet participation. When it goes so do I, at least with personal content. I have zero interest in social media proper, and have no desire to start over someplace else. I just hope this place lasts longer than I do.

Same here Mark. I only frequent this and one other forum. I'm on here multiple times a day,it's my go to place when I fire up the PC in the morning.

I've given this more thought, and why I appreciate the older demographics here...

A young man is not going to relate to:

- constantly having your heroes dying off, whether a guitar god or military man, or even family and friends. Happens to everyone of course, but not nearly so concentrated as when you get older.

- the challenges (and rewards) of keeping the sparks flying in a 20 or 30 or more year-old romantic relationship.

- a time when military aircraft was hot stuff on TV and in the movies, as well as influences of the Cold War and then the Gulf Wars. Also a time when PC stores had entire shelves dedicated to flight sims. There was something for everyone, and the various flight sim sub-forums here were bustling with discussions.

I miss that last item, as the classic sim boards that I heavily participated on were eventually archived into the sunset. Other than a generic flight sim sub-forum, this left me with Community Hall (which I mostly avoided my first few years here, forget about PWEC if it even existed then) and the newer Music board. But then an age 41 health scare in 2008 gave me a major shift in priorities that I'm still trying to balance today.
