When I was very young, about 6 or 7, I got an Airfix Hawker-Siddley Harrier jump-jet model kit for Christmas, which my dad immediately took and made biggrin

That model I had for all of my childhood, and is possibly still in my mother's attic for all I know, and its shape is burned into my consciousness. Now that I'm 56, I can jump into a VR representation of that shape and fly it about, have its volume and bulk rendered around me and its systems and characteristics revealed to me. What a time to be alive smile

Bravo!

It's a shame how jaded some have become.

100% agree with F4U and DM. For YEARS I had been wanting a realistically modelled A-10 and KA-50 and needless to say with DCS I've now put in several hundred hours into each platform.

From a slightly different perspective... When I first saw KA-50 being demo'd I couldn't believe the complexity and realism of it. I bought it as soon as possible and then found I just couldn't devote the time or have the willingness to learn it properly so just flew around in it. Didn't stop me buying loads more modules though.

I own the DCS A-10C (and now A-10C II) and F-18 modules and the complexity is enough to keep me learning for months/years. When I see the complaints about "incomplete modeling" the phrase that comes to mind is "Some guys would complain about a free BJ".

I think what you really mean is;

Nearly all the time, we are disappointed at ED not meeting their potential, and with a few minor tweaks and the ability to actually learn from the previous mistakes the DCS product would be untouchable.

The truth is DCS isn't 'great' - it barely has any combat in it never mind being a 'combat simulator' as the title indicates. However, like the quote above it could easily be something on such a larger and better scale. It's the best example of a missed opportunity ever.

I have an embarrassment of modules, I'm sure most of which I'll never do more than try it out for an hour or so :/ I found myself with some disposable income earlier this year and there was a DCS sale. Together with upgrading my 10 year old PC and some peripherals I spent a pretty penny, but I'm enjoying it all.

I'm flying mostly the Harrier (of course) but I also enjoy the helis.

Oh, and BTW, in a previous life I was a radar tech in the RAF, and specifically on a Rapier squadron. I was very surprised indeed when I realised that my ground units module actually has Rapier smile

I can tell you that at least visually, the models are just about perfect. They don't quite act in a realistic way when you closely observe them (and I'm talking mainly of movement details only someone who's worked with them would notice), but the overall effectiveness is a reasonable approximation. Take a look at them sometime if you have that module: all the labels, cables, switches & handles are authentic, even the generator brought back memories smile I observed them in VR and the sense of recognition was uncanny.

Wow. Was reading all of the positive posts about DCS and thought I was in the wrong place! Yeah, I've been flying flight sims and flying games since the early 1990's. Always kept dreaming of the day that they'd look more realistic. Those days are here. And I picked up that A-10c II for only 6 dollars! All of these years later, the A-10 is still the DCS jet that I fly most of the time.

Agreed.
Can`t wait to I get my VR glasses.
I have ordered the HP Reverb G2. I hope they work well with my i7-9700K and RTX 2080 Super..
I pulled the trigger and bought a new PC in May, and hope that is something that I won`t regret.
Seems like It`s never the right time to upgrade.
May be I end up playing Yatzee in VR? biggrin

DCS and IL2 with keep you away from the Yahtzee!

And I highly recommend the WWI IL2 sim "Flying Circus", great fun in VR!

I might pick up IL2 again. I think I have a couple of versions on my shelf from the early days.
Really enjoyed flying the early jets. :-)

The only version that supports VR is the "Great Battles" series

Ooh. Now I do like the sound of a WW1 biplane VR sim.

I've never really been into WWI sims, until VR. The close in style of dogfighting with biplanes is very exhilarating in VR.

Me neither, but it sounds like a natural fit for VR. Same as racing actually.

So to be clear: does the Flying Circus support VR? Steam doesn't make it clear.

Oh yes. If you buy through Steam you must first have Battle of Stalingrad, then you can all Kuban, Moscow, Bodenplatte, Flying Circus etc. But BOS on sale is only $12 or less.

Great, thanks for the info. I'll put BOS & Flying Circus on my wishlist as they're pretty expensive. Halloween is coming up so there's a good chance of nabbing them cheaper.

KA-50 is my all time favorite DCS module. System wise it really isn't too difficult to learn, and it gave me the best feeling of flying I've had in any sim.

As someone else mentioned, I have (too) many modules, most of which I've done little flying in, but the ones I keep coming back to are the Harrier, the Hornet, the Shark, and the Hog.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

I had the original standalone Blackshark sim, which I got reasonably proficient at, but which now some 15 years or so later I've almost completely forgotten smile I stopped playing it when I realised that trees provide no cover or obstruction and were invisible to the AI. I believe now it is different. (Incidentally, it looks to me like that original standalone game is now free to download from ED's website. Good deal wink )

I had the feeling, in VR, that the Gazelle was too small. I thought maybe the scale was off, but the stick looked about the right size, it just seemed very... cramped. When I looked to my right, the handle the pilot uses to help get in & out of the pit seemed very close to my head, making me think it was all too small. But, when I jumped into the Blackshark in VR, it felt more like I was sitting in a large bathtub lined with switches & gauges biggrin so the scale is probably perfectly OK, the Gazelle is just really, really small & tight.

Great find F4Dash4!!

I checked a couple of days ago and I believe the price was 50 or 60 USD. So I selected to wait, which was smart. smile

I have my eye on that too. Currently with my Pimax 4K I have to use in 3DoF mode, which is OK most of the time but I can't lean around cockpit struts to acquire visual on something, except in a small way by rolling my head. I'm hoping my new graphics card will be enough to get a decent performance from it, as my CPU is quite old now. I haven't actually pulled the trigger on it yet, the only place I've seen it available to buy in Europe is the Spanish Amazon site and that's as a preorder, and it's quite expensive to throw money at something not released, not reliably reviewed in it's release state, and with no information to whether I would be at the back of a very long queue. I have confidence that it will be a huge improvement, but the other factors stop me.

I`ve been on the fence with regards to VR now so when I saw some early reviews on Youtube I decided to buy it.
I have a GTX2080 Super card and hope it will run good on that.
As always I pulled the trigger too early with regards to the timing of a PC upgrade and I hope I will not regret ending up wit a I7 9700K, GTX2080 Suoer and 32GB of RAM.

Grr. Not getting any joy from IL-2 at the moment, constant crashes.

Freeze on first start, but will boot to game interface on subsequent starts. Can get as far as sitting in the cockpit but about 2 or 3 seconds into the action I get a freeze and have to shut down the app. 53 minutes logged so far, I have just over an hour app-time to fix it before my refund window closes.

Just a heads up.
Battle of Bodenplatte is on 50% sale on Steam until Nov. 3.

Not so far no. I can get it to work on the monitor with TrackIR, but no deal with the VR. I've read some forum fixes but they're either irrelevant to me or didn't work.

That's a shame, it's great on Oculus Rift

I just got tired of ED and there Forum and there product, so I simply uninstalled it. Someday I may revisit as I have never even flow my P47 from the WWII start up. Is there any word on the Me262? I am glad some are enjoying it anyway.

Since you are into WW 2 have you tried the new IL-2 series? That has both the P-47 and the ME 262. In my opinion I wouldn't waste time with the WW 2 stuff from DCS at this point.

My rule is DCS for jets / IL-2 for WWII.

Update?

Unfortunately I went for the refund frown I just couldn't get it to work in VR. I shaved it as close to the 2 hours as possible but no luck. I have plenty in the way of flight sims and I figured I didn't have need/time for one that was as complex as this without the draw of a compelling VR experience. I will probably look at it again if & when I upgrade my headset to a more modern and capable solution.

Probably will be the HP Reverb G2 but I also have my eye on the recently announced DecaGear system. Early days for it but it looks mighty interesting.

Keeping in line with the topic heading. There is a newly released F-105d mod which is still in beta but being able to fly complex multiplayer strikes in the Thud and Weasel is something I am great full for.
