I watched Top Gun again, for maybe the third time, just last week on Amazon.

Cheesy stuff? Oh yeah.

AWESOME flying, still...Yep.

It's much better to be cheesy and well remembered than to have been serious and forgotten. Heck, there are several Oscar winning films from the 80's that are forgotten except by hardcore film buffs. How many people today remember films like "Ordinary People" and "Out of Africa"?

The best movies from the 80's have boobs. No logical reason for them, but there they were in most comedy movies, it was like it was mandatory.
I don't really have fond memories of 80's movies.

I found a whole new appreciation for Top Gun after watching it on blu ray. The cheese is still there but the opening launch sequence is worth it.

"Ordinary People" was pretty good. I'm not sure I have ever watched "Out of Africa."

Beyond comedies, the 80s had man gritty, dark, societal studies that were very edgy and on point. The period also produced four star all time greats such as "Aliens" and "Terminator." The 80s were an evolution of 70s filmmaking with better film stock, pacing, editing, and less emphasis of capturing the entire moment, second by second in long, drawn out fashion, while still remaining "in your face."

Different periods for movies, but both were great.

I think the quality of film fell off and plateaued from there, then had a minor peak again in the late 90s, before a long, gradual decline in the 2000s, to where we are now with few serious, high quality movies being made.

Come to Europe. We still have mandatory boobs in all movies. And equal opportunity for willies too.

In fact right now in Denmark there is a new TV show for kids u/15 called "Off With Your Clothes", where naked people parade in front of an audience of kids (no, not kidding) and show off all their pink bits with themes like: Scars / Piercing / Tattoos / Size / Bottoms / Boobs / & of course Willies

I do not get why the UK was so keen to leave Europe?

I watched this last night, courtesy of Youtube's increasingly uncanny algorithms, I thought it was surprisingly good for the most part despite the fan film level production values.

I watched one movie this weekend, "Devil," which I admit, kept me guessing who he'd be throughout. In the end I I was close, and he was one of the two I chose him to be. What was nice is to see a positive mention of God in a film, for a change. Not something seen very often, anymore. Three stars out of four.

You know, I totally understand and acknowledge that "societal norms" vary from country to country but this example IMHO really goes too far.

When children are involved, that steps waaaay over the line for me.

I don't mind a little risqué, but we're way past that now. It's the access to trash that's unprecedented. Kids will be kids, I traded girly rags with my neighborhood friends (or traded something to get one). Usually they were swiped from someone's father's or older brother's hidden stash. But these were tame by comparison as they had limitations of what they could show. How would a parent control this today?

At the risk of being called a wuss (lol), it seems to me that today's teen pop culture doesn't promote the love, romance and loyalty of an exclusive relationship that I grew up with. The 80's had lots of sleaze for sure, but also promoted being in love with someone (as did the 70's), *especially* in popular music. Nowadays, a teen having feelings for someone is considered weak? Or am I that disconnected with modern culture?

Dammit Kurt!

You make a very valid point regarding love and loyalty.

Speaking of modern culture , The ear marks seem to be the following: If it feels good, do it. and No one is held responsible.

Devil was great, and one of the biggest surprises I've seen in a long time.

Self/Less was surprisingly good, carried by great acting and a good story instead of sci-fi/technology.
