His son Wolfgang posted this on Twitter. Valeri Bertinelli seems to confirm it. I am devastated. My favorite guitarist of all time. Favorite Rockstar. Throat Cancer.

And thanks Eddie for the great "Balance" concert in Atlanta (1996?), you were on the top of your game!

I began a VH marathon this evening while mowing grass.
Spring of 1984, first kiss was to "Ice Cream Man" off their debut album. High school parking lot (11th grade), standing outside of wife's car while it warms up (old Malibu Classic 350), playing the Rock mix tape I made her. This was the only time I recall ever being nervous about progressing to that next step (from holding hands in the hallways), everything afterwards coming easily and naturally. But for that first kiss, I was shaking in my shoes and wasn't sure if I could do it. "Ice Cream Man" comes on and she's droning on about school or work or whatever (I'd already tuned her out and was listening to the song ). I just remember thinking how super cute she looked at that moment and when the song kicked in (at about the minute mark), I grabbed her waist and gave her a long deep Frenchy. The chemistry was euphoric, and somehow I managed to get on the correct school bus!
The power of VH (also, "1984" being one of our favorite shared albums)! Thanks, Ed.

RIP Eddie. Thanks for the great music.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
Crap... The early 80s would have sounded so bland without him. RIP

Got that right, If were not for the 80s music scene the world would not be the same. Some of the best music ever came from it.
+ Infinity (or at least Graham's number)!
80's music was fun and romantic (which is I why I believe it has such staying power), and at this stage in life, I'll take as much of both as I can get!

I don't know that I've ever posted in one of these threads. Not sure why. But EVH man.
This is a tough one. I play guitar and was a teenager when VH was at the top. Needless to say, Eddie was a huge inspiration. It's funny, but he was so out of this world that I never could come close to doing what he did. The finger-tapping, and those ripping solos, so I would just play along like Van Halen had a rhythm guitarist. And as much as he inspired me in a technical sense, even if it was beyond me, he was just as much of an influence for others things, like his tone and the fact that he had no problem slapping guitars together part by part. He wasn't concerned with how it looked, just the way it played and the tone.
I'm still chasing the tone, all these years later. I've modified my Marshall over the years to make it sound as much like his "Brown sound" as I can. EVH used a Marshall "Plexi" Super Lead for this, and while I don't have a Plexi, I've managed to transform it by changing tube type, capacitors, speakers and the like, all in search of this wonderful sound . Think of the guitar tone in tracks like Jamie's Cryin' and Runnin' With the Devil. It was super-overdrive yes, but so much warmer and organic than the metal guitar tones that came before. I've heard it described as 'liquid'. The combination of Eddie's tone and technique just blew me away and quite honestly still does to this day. A true Legend of a guitar player. There are many great guitar players, but only a few that were revolutionary. EVH was one.
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!
