Still can't get the cards (at any reasonable price from a retail outfit, anyhow), but problems are surfacing: >RTX 3000 Power Supply Requirements Amp Up PSU Shortage Concerns< Looks like the exceptionally high power requirements for the 30-series GPUs, coupled with a power supply shortage due to the global pandemic, is driving prices way up at a minimum. "...we observed up to a 335W average power draw from just the 3080..." (For a card which is supposed to draw 320W, mind you...and they're reporting 335w average, meaning max would be higher still) And, as I mentioned elsewhere, this can change the 'cost equation' beyond the simple cost of the cards themselves: "So if you're one of those unlucky people that don't have a qualifying unit to compliment your RTX 3080, be prepared to pay even more for your RTX 3080 upgrade than what you see on the GPUs sticker." Also, perhaps even more concerning: >PC Builders Demanding to Know How Many Capacitors in RTX 3080< Seems as if capacitors used in 3080 cards have been causing the cards to crash. Having worked professionally in electronics over the past 35 years, I have seen plenty of instances where caps cause random crashes and general instability as they start to deteriorate. I just recently fixed a top-end 850w power supply that had leaky caps in it. But that's always been in older hardware - usually, several years old.Of course, all the manufacturers are hopping up to say caps aren't the problem, even though some initial designs " cannot pass the real world applications testing", forcing design changes, and some sources indicate there are definitely problems related to which caps are used: >3080 Stability Woes Traced to Cheap Capacitors< >Capacitor Issues Causing RTX Crashes<At the same time, Nvidia claims a driver update resolved the issues...at the expense (of course) of some performance. This isn't new: Reducing performance in software, in order to overcome hardware design defects (I'm looking at you, Intel...) Collectively, perhaps a few more reasons it's not the best idea to run out and buy a new 30 series card. If you could even find one for the supposed release price, that is.

. The few sellers on eBay who actually have 3080s in their possession, vs the ones selling "pre-orders" (meaning they will ship them when they have them), have been getting $1,800 to $2,200 closing prices. However, there is a 3080 Founder's Edition on there right now that closes in a little over two hours that is currently at $20,100, (not a typo), with 21 bids so far. WTF! CLICK HERE Oh, and shipping is NOT free. .

Ha Ha. We are both loosers in the bidding but I suspect winners as a result of loosing!! Does that make any sense!! I'll have another three fingers of Aberfeldy with a splash of water!

. So true kk, shipping and now sales tax too. Careful on that Aberfeldy intake Robert, or you might just throw in a $25k jump bid in the last 10 seconds on that Founder's Edition. .

An update: Nvidia's CEO is now saying there won't likely be a solution to the shortage of the 30-series GPUs until next year: >link<He said ""The 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue," (which I think is kind of...well, a stupid thing to say IMHO...) but laying stupid aside, one has to wonder what will happen to the $699 "list price" they touted, if they consider the situation a "demand" issue. Typically, that means "You pay more". (Yup, good ole' basic capitalism). As of now, even though (of course) all the 30-series are still out of stock, there are now only two (out of eighteen) that are showing the cited $699 price (surprisingly, an MSI card and an Asus card).

.
I was at Micro Center yesterday afternoon picking up another case fan for my upgrade and asked them about how the 3080 rollout has been for their store. They've only had two shipments arrive, one with 11 units and one with 13 units, all "take-what-you-get" in terms of brands and models. The cheapest one they sold was the base MSI 3080 for $780, the most expensive was a high-end Asus 3080 for $1200. The fellow I was talking with, who was a VERY tech savvy sort, said it was so frustrating. When the second batch came in he started calling the customers on his waiting list immediately to let them know they should come in ASAP and grab one, and NONE of them got one because customers who were in the store picking up other items found out there were 3080s to be had, and in less than two hours all 13 were gone, (no store "hold" policy in this situation). He added they were expecting another shipment of a dozen or so early next week - maybe.
