NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition Review Roundup

For reasons unknown, NVIDIA decided to split the review embargo for Founders Edition (lifting today) and board partners’ card reviews (lifting tomorrow). Today we can only read reviews of NVIDIA’s own model.

NVIDIA Founders Edition for Ampere series is not, so to speak, a reference design. This graphics card will only be sold by NVIDIA and it will feature special features, such as its own board design and Molex Microfit (12-pin) power connectors.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 CUSTOM Graphics Cards Review Roundup

Today the embargo on custom designs officially lifts. Starting from now you can also order the first Ampere-based graphics card.

They seem sold out at Newegg. They do not say when more will arrive. There was a rumor that there would be very few cards actually for sale this month -- that this was a publicity related pre-release of a sort. We'll see.

Initial RTX 3080 performance is turning out like my "back of envelope" calculations said it would (faster ones are coming). Now, I hope the "reference" "Big Navi" hits my "back of envelope" FPS numbers for the "rumored price".

NVIDIA issues a statement on GeForce RTX 3080 going immediately out of stock

RTX 3080: A big launch of big GPU with tiny supply

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 launch day will definitely be remembered as a paper launch. Around the world,

The stock has immediately been depleted, almost as if there was no stock at all.

It is also worth mentioning that two weeks ago TweakTown had a story that Ampere may see limited stock until the end of this year. But at the time there was no way of confirming this information.

[From Nvidia] "Over 50 major global retailers had inventory at 6 a.m. pacific. Our NVIDIA team and partners are shipping more RTX 3080 cards every day to retailers. We apologize to our customers for this morning’s experience.”

Thus, the leaks/rumors of limited supply were possibly correct (not proven). They said Nvidia would produce a few cards using preliminary batches of chips to get the jump on Big Navi. But, full chip production would not begin for at least a couple months because "low chip yield" problems had to be "worked out". We'll see how things turn out over the next couple months.

In any case, those who have to wait will have improved versions of RTX3080/3090 to pick from -- maybe that's a good thing for those Nvidia consumers.

This has been debunked by Gamersnexus: Report: Availability & Supply of NVIDIA RTX 3080 Video Cards

Check out the full video for the full story, but multiple sources have confirmed that the amount of cards available have been on par with previous Nvidia launches. Demand is just unreasonably high at the moment for various reasons.

Thanks for the link. Folks can watch the video and make their own minds up. That's a goal of this thread -- provide info and let the people decide.

As noted in an above comment, I personally don't know the answers regarding Marketing and Chip Yield. RTX 3080 is a good card for the price. And, Big Navi is not likely to beat RTX 3090 FPS. I'm not grinding any axes -- just pasting the salient comments from articles and at times summarizing them in a few words below the "cut and past" section.

I watched the whole thing. "Debunked" is too strong (to my way of thinking). I saw it as an "Explanation" of a "Viewpoint". He did not address possible "low chip yield". He did not address the possible "marketing" aspects of releasing now. He said at-release stock was as high as ever for some card makers -- but also noted card sales are much greater now than in past months and years. He did not address if they should have planned for that. Etc.

FWIW: I believe if I want one of the first "Big Navi" cards, I'll have to jump on it as soon as it comes on line -- I expect the first stock to dissipate rapidly -- just as with RTX3080. Rumors are that "Big Navi" will be in short supply for several weeks after release.

On RTX3000 cards and Big Navi card availability, we'll see how it plays out over the rest of 2020.

Custom 410W GeForce RTX 3090 Brings The Bling And The Heat

Emtek, a South Korean brand,.. has announced the Xenon GeForce RTX 3090 Turbo Jet OC D6X 24GB, which comes with a glittering shroud and a blistering maximum power consumption of 410W.

...which explains the beefy cooler and the triple 8-pin PCIe power connectors

AMD RX5700XT came out using 220+ watts and some people were saying that was too much.

Many years ago, AMD released the potentially fastest GPU. So, to compete, Nvidia produced a factory overclocked, high power usage GPU with a speculated 2 year use life. At that time, Nvidia said 2 years was okay because Nvidia fans buy a new card every two years anyway. No problem. Some people want the fastest FPS no matter what -- and Nvidia said long ago they would always have the fastest card. AMD said, back then, they understood the situation -- and went for Performance/Price.

The interesting part is that back then Nvidia's solution to a truly competitive AMD GPU -- was a high power usage Nvidia GPU. AMD fans can hope that the GTX3080 and GTX3090 power use is due to Nvidia realizing Big Navi really is a "problem" for them. Just speculation. We'll know more when Big Navi launches.

This is not a big deal. No doubt they will fix it. But, it happened. So, for completeness:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Users Report Crashes & Black Screens During Gaming

buyers who did manage to get the cards at launch are now facing severe crashes during gaming. The problems have been reported at the majority of forums which include Computerbase, LinusTechTips, OCUK, and even NVIDIA's own forums.

the issue seems to be specific to the custom variants of the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. The main issue that is being reported is that the cards crash to the desktop while gaming

We can't say for sure if the issue has more so to do with the software-side or if the existing clocks speeds are just too high for the RTX 3080 AIBs to handle.

I checked in at Newegg a few seconds after 9:00. They had two RTX3090 brand-names listed as "add to cart". The rest were "out of stock".

By 9:02, they were all listed "out of stock". By 9:08, their server had "gone down".

Merely a confirmation of new AMD Navi code names:

Quote
AMD Sienna Cichlid confirmed as Navi 21, Navy Flounder is Navi 22

those codenames have no meaning, they are generated from a random selection of word lists. We believe this is a technique to derail the interest of everyone looking for RDNA2 GPUs information.

AMD Sienna Cichlid is Navi 21 or "Big Navi". Navi 22 and 23 are lower price cards. Code names are used by AMD, TSMC, and Software/Game developers to communicate.

The Navi 21, etc. will be "announced" in late October. They are expected to be on sale in November/December.

[EDIT] This article has been officially debunked. It does not "confirm". See post just below.

Says "Confirms". But, it is based on an "unofficial" comment.

AMD Confirms Volume For Radeon RX 6000 Graphics Card Launch

AMD's Frank Azor, Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions, has [unofficially] confirmed that AMD's RX 6000 series will have ample supply at launch for everyone.

the new graphics cards are expected [not confirmed] to hard launch on October 28.

Keep in mind we might see some supply bottlenecks happen or logistical delays with shipments that last a week or two...

If you are wondering with what is happening over at NVIDIA... .. yields for the initial few batches of the Samsung 8nm node are lower than expected and expensive. To protect its shareholders, the company has been cautious about its orders of the first few batches [i.e. ordered fewer than needed to fill expected orders] .
..

The Samsung 8nm node is not "perfected" yet -- so, Nvidia is procuring at reduced levels. AMD uses TSMC 7nm that is well established -- so, its safe and cost effective to procure large quantities. We'll see.

Since publication, Frank Azor has clarified/backtracked on what he has said

There has been nothing new to report on AMD recently -- regarding CPUs and GPUs. Just rehashes of the speculations we've already read and some new leak-type information that may not be accurate.

We're supposed to get official information on the Ryzen 5000 series of CPU on October 8.

More speculation based on older data suggests the actual availability of Ryzen 5000 CPUs will be in late October and actual availability of RX6000 GPUs in November. Supposedly, AMD will "paper launch" them sooner in October (as posted above).

The hardware sites are lacking data. But, they have to publish something (its their job) -- so lots of untrustworthy guessing lately. This post is just to let you know, I'm still checking for "real/concrete/empirical" information (or at least believable leaks) regarding the new AMD CPUs and GPUs to copy/paste into this thread.

My technique is to check 9 (or more) technical/gaming sites each day for my own amusement. Then, I copy/paste here the cogent comments relevant to the title of the thread and gamers. Not many of those on a given day.

There were articles saying AMD was discontinuing RX5700 GPUs. They were not factual (a lot of that going on lately).

AMD: 'We are continuing to produce RX 5700 series graphics cards.'

Don’t believe the rumors- RX 5700 isn’t dead yet.

[from AMD] “We are continuing to produce the Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards, which deliver exceptional 1440p gaming experiences,” AMD told Tom’s Hardware in an email. “We will continue to respond to market demand.”

since the RX 5700 cards are about 10% faster than their RTX 2060 line counterparts while coming in cheaper than an RTX 3070 will, there’s still room for them among AMD fans who don’t plan to upgrade to 4K

I run my RX5700XT at 4K all the time at Ultra in-game settings with visually smooth framerates. Only exception is MSFS2020. That I run at 2K in game and the RX5700XT Radion Image Sharpening (RIS) function raises it to 4K on screen. RIS works with any game to raise the detail level at a cost of only a couple percent frame rate (Nvidia advertises a similar function that only works in a few games programmed for it).

RX5700XT 50th Anniversary - 3 monitors = 23P (1080p) + 43"L (2160p) + 23P (1080p), AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, 32GB RAM@3.2GHz, Gigabyte X570 AORUS Pro WIFI MB, (2x M.2 SSD on MB + SSD + 5x HD) = 25TB storage, Rosewill 1050W PSU, Rosewill Thor V2 Case, ASUS AC86U router, VKB Gladiator WW2 Stick, Pedals, Ripjaws KM780 RGB KB, AORUS Thunder M7 Mouse, W10 Pro
